Fun Facts and Figures History

CarMax was the pioneer of the used car superstore concept and has been in business for more than ten years, having opened its first store in Richmond, Va. in September 1993.

CarMax celebrated selling its one-millionth car in July 2003, and celebrated its 10-year anniversary in September 2003.

CarMax is the only survivor of the used car superstore wars of the late 1990’s.

CarMax debuted on the FORTUNE 500 list in 2004 at No. 435.

CarMax debuted on the FORTUNE “100 Best Companies to Work For” list in 2005 at No. 87.

We’re Different

CarMax is the only major auto retailer that buys cars from customers without requiring a purchase.

CarMax is a retail concept, not an auto dealer. CarMax builds stores much like other major retailers build theirs; franchise laws do not bind CarMax; and, CarMax does not “deal” on the cars it sells.

The Numbers

In fiscal 2005, CarMax sold more than 270,000 used and new cars and light trucks.

CarMax currently has a staff of approximately 550 buyers nationwide that have collectively appraised more almost five million vehicles since 1993.

Buyers for CarMax will appraise more than one million vehicles this year.

is responsible for about 20 percent of CarMax’s sales.
