Closing Message Congratulations on completing Sail Into Retirement, Lesson One! By now, you should have answered some tough questions in this lesson, such as: “What is it in life that you really want?” and “What do you intend to do with the rest of your life?” You learned to put yourself in the picture when you look at the vision of your future. You discovered - or are well on the way to knowing - what your true passion is, and you wrote your vision statement. Knowing what you want is more than half of the challenge, and it’s never too late in life to begin something new… especially if that something can have a major impact on the quality of your life! In the coming lessons, you’ll learn how to transform your vision into reality. In Lesson Two, you’ll break your big dream down into smaller, easily achievable sub-goals, so you can get started right away and start seeing progress. See you in Lesson Two!? Sincerely,? Well done on completing Lesson Two! I know Lesson two required a lot of introspection and soul-searching, but I’m confident you made it through unscathed. We have all been setting goals our entire lives – in this course, I simplified the system by asking you to break down each goal into smaller action steps required to achieve that goal. You then explored the resources available to you – or some that you might still need - to help with each goal. Later in the course, we’ll return to examine the priority and risk of each of these goals. I ask that you trust the system. By doing this work now, by the end of the course you’ll end up with a plan of action – or a Navigation Course - that is doubt-free. You’ll know exactly what you want, as well as the steps necessary to get there all because of the work you’re doing now. Did you carefully follow the steps in this lesson? Did you establish achievable goals with action steps and identify the resources you’ll need?” If you haven’t yet, please take the time to do this important step in the process NOW, as it will be the foundation for much of what we’ll do in the upcoming lessons. In Lesson Three, we’re going to have some fun and create your own personal SWOT analysis - similar to what you’ve done in business or your career - but this time it will be for your personal life. One of the main “secrets” to creating that “perfect” retirement, is to identify which areas of your life are at the level you desire, and which still need some (or a lot of) work. Your Retirement Wheel In this exercise we’ll identify those areas of your life in which you are satisfied, and those which can be improved. Remember that change requires action, from small steps to giant leaps, to bring about the modification you seek. Please download the pdf document below, called?Your Retirement Wheel?.?This is a powerful tool that will help you identify the level of satisfaction in eight very important areas of your life.Click HERE to Download the Retirement Wheel! Our ultimate goal is to achieve balance in the eight areas listed on the wheel: a) Download Your Retirement Wheel. b) Rate each of the eight areas on the spokes of the wheel – “1” being the lowest level of satisfaction; and “5” meaning you are very satisfied in that area. c) Once you have rated each area, draw a line connecting your ratings on the eight spokes of the wheel. This will give you a great visual of what is working well in your life, and what needs new effortin order to achieve your vision of a balanced retirement. How does your wheel look?Is it balanced? Does your wheel look like it would roll smoothly down the road or is lopsided? Which areas need work? Are any of the spokes that you rated with a low number really important to you? Can you identify what is stopping you from improving those areas?I understand just because you know what you need to change, doesn’t mean you’ll do it. It’s the old, “Easier said than done,” syndrome. But that doesn’t mean you can’t take action, and actually work on it. If it’s important to you, then there’s no reason to put it off any longer! The good news is, that’s exactly what we are working on – helping you create your actionable steps…then it’ll be up to you to implement those steps. Get Your Friend/Spouse/Partner/Family Member On Board! This is not relationship counseling , but if you live with a spouse or partner, friend, or roommate; you may wish to consider if he or she shares your vision of retirement. If so, that’s a strength and you can work together toward your goals. But there’s a chance he or she may not share your exact same passion. The good news is, living together doesn’t mean you must share all of the same interests. A good test of a great relationship is to encourage each other in your individual pursuits, even if it’s completely different from your interests. You might want to consider how to bring your spouse/partner on board with your vision. Perhaps the two of you can merge your visions, or modify yours if needed. For example, while you may wish to take a world cruise for a year, your spouse/partner might be uncomfortable at sea and would be pushing their limits just to go to sea for a week. Perhaps you could find a compromise on a calm river cruise in Europe. Hopefully your visions intersect – at least in some areas – and you can spend time together pursuing some areas of your passion. Beyond that, you can express your love and respect by supporting each other’s areas of interest with curiosity and active listening – a skill that for many of us takes some serious practice! You may find that your relationship falls under both strength and weakness. The key is to communicate with each other – ideally, by taking turns, and truly listening with an open mind to the other’s ideas, goals, and vision. Your Living Situation Do you like your current living situation? Do you like the location, living space, and neighbors? Is it convenient for shopping, dining, and the activities in which you participate? Is it close enough (or far enough) from your family? Is it too densely populated or not urban enough? Is it affordable on your retirement budget? If all is good, then your living situation is a strength. If not, it may be a weakness upon which you need to improve. In general, are you pleased with your current living situation or are you feeling the need to change things up a bit? On a scale of 1 to 5, How would you rate* your satisfaction with your Living Situation: ___ * - 1 meaning that you are completely dissatisfied; 5, you are completely satisfied Your Finances Are your finances a strength or weakness, opportunity or threat? Are you able to live the lifestyle you want with your current and projected finances? If so, consider that a strength. If not, then it’s a weakness or threat, and part of your plan may include earning money part or full time. If you want to retire on a cruise ship, can you afford it? That goes for any big change in lifestyle such as moving, travel, education, starting a business, etc. If you can’t afford what you want, you have two choices 1. either modify your lifestyle or 2. continue making money by working part or full time. On a scale of 1 to 5, How would you rate your satisfaction with your Finances: ___ * - 1 meaning that you are completely dissatisfied; 5, you are completely satisfied Sharing Your Knowledge Throughout your life you have been accumulating knowledge, skills, experience, and “tricks of the trade,” about your profession. You may also have this same information about your hobby, recreational, or other activities. What will happen to all of this wisdom when you retire and are no longer involved in a daily exchange of information? Will yours be lost forever…or will you somehow pass it on to others? Without experiences and knowledge passed on to others - through what Star Trek calls, “The Katra” - yours is not recorded and will disappear when you do. I know it’s sad to think about letting your precious experience go to waste, so let’s make sure that doesn’t happen! Here are some ideas for you: ?You can teach at your local college continuing education program, at night school, substitute at day schools, assist at private schools, offer workshops through meet-up groups, create a course and put it up on sites like ; give a talk at your local Rotary, Lyons Club, or other clubs and organizations to which you belong. You might even take this opportunity to work on becoming a professional speaker. The sky is the limit! ?You can mentor kids, entrepreneurs, and students in your field. Be a golf mentor at the public course or your private club. Be a big brother or sister. Opportunities abound to be a mentor or even a consultant, either for pay, or just because you want to help people. ? You can coach kids or adult sports teams or other leagues, from card playing to tennis, from chess playing to fashion. ?A great way to share your knowledge is through writing. You can publish your own book or report on kindle and you’ll find all the information you need about the simple process on amazon. You can write about any subject, and as often as you like by publishing online, through a blog. There’s lots of information available online about how to get started with blogging. How will you share your knowledge with the world? Type your answer here – use as much space as you need… Work Are you considering staying active and earning a living? You can easily do so by leveraging your knowledge, skills, and experience. What do you know how to do best? What have you learned in your professional experience you would like to continue with further work? How much of a supplemental paycheck do you need, to provide enough money to live comfortably, without having to work the long hours of your professional career? Keep in mind that one of your primary goal is to create balance in your retirement. During our professional careers, we tend to be out of balance by giving a disproportionate amount of time to work. Make it a priority to create balance in your life. However, work is not purely just to earn money. Chances are your professional life also provided you with fulfillment and purpose. You were needed, valued, respected, and you were a contributor. You were given feedback, advice, scolded, and thanked - and you gave all of that back to others. You were socially interactive at work. It is this fulfillment - this feeling of belonging, and being valued for your experience - you want to look for in a job search, whether it is full or part time. Maybe financial gain is not a priority, in which case you can spend your time serving others and sharing your knowledge and experience, while feeling valued and needed. Volunteering for your favorite organization will give you great satisfaction. Perhaps it’s time to become a member of its board, or join the board of a company you have always admired. Experiment with a few different positions and see what sits well with you. See the?Resources Page? for suggestions of where to look for opportunities. On a scale of 1 to 5, How would you rate* your satisfaction with ”Sharing Your Knowledge: ___ * - 1 meaning that you are completely dissatisfied; 5, you are completely satisfied. If you were to do some sort of work in your retirement - either full or part time - what would be the perfect job, business, or volunteering opportunity? Type your answer here – use as much space as you need… Recreation Yey… Great News! Who says retirement can’t be fun? This is your chance to spend plenty of time perfecting your golf swing, rekindle your tennis game, become the champion card player, participate in a road rally, get back in the pool, take up yoga, and do those day hikes you’ve been talking about for so long. I don’t like using the word “finally” because it kind of sounds like you’re about to die. Participation and viewing of sports - from joining a softball league to following your local team around the country - can provide satisfaction, laughter, and smiles. And staying active - both mentally and physically - is important to your long-term health and happiness. While some people may see television as recreational and fun; the fact is that sitting in front of it for an average of 4.5 hours per day,as most retirees do, will not only steal those precious hours from your life, it will rob you of time that you could use for physical activity, or other fun activities. We are all subject to Newton’s Law: A body in motion stays in motion and a body at rest stays at rest. Commit to keep in motion! Action Guide 5.1 Lesson Five answers the #1 question asked of me: How did I make the big final decision to move forward with my bold goal of Sailing Around the World? For me, committing 100% to my goal became easy, once I decided to base my big personal decisions on my Priorities - just like you probably did in your professional career. It sounds easy - because it is - when you believe in your vision and you commit to it. In this lesson you’re going to learn a simple system to use in your decision-making process. This system will help you move forward leaps and bounds toward taking action. Take a few moments using the form below, to brainstorm your priorities. Then, referring back to the action steps you have previously identified (in Lesson 2.1 / Action Guide 2.1), rate each action step according to its priority level using the A to D system. List below your top priorities: Type your answer here – use as much space as you need… 2. Go back and take a look at the action steps you determined in Lesson 2.1 - the steps that need to be completed in order to achieve your first big goal. Copy and paste them below: Type your answer here – use as much space as you need… 3. Rate each action step based on priority, from A to D - A being the highest priority and D being the lowest – see detailed instructions in the Video, in Lesson 5.1, at minute 3:58; and at minute 8:00. Action Guide 5.2 Let’s implement the A-D Prioritization System in other areas of your life. Maybe you’ve been struggling with decisions NOT necessarily related to your BIG GOALS, but something else in your life. Why not use the A-D system and make those decisions now? (See Video, in Lesson 5.1, at Minute 8:00 and 8:30) Let’s Set Sail! Write down 3 issues on which you've been struggling to make a decision; think about each pending decision and determine your answer according to the A - D system. 1. Record below the #1 issue on which you've been struggling to make a decision lately. Type your answer here – use as much space as you need… 2. Now, using your priority A - D system, make a decision on the above issue. * For example, if you really want to get in shape, but you’d like to do so on a Treadmill, while watching TV – and you rated this as an “A” – or crucially important issue – than it’s decision time. Since a) your health is important to you and b) you know that you love to walk/run on treadmills while watching your favorite show; the decision to get in the car – or get on – and get out there and buy a treadmill is now easy. A must. OR if you realize that buying a treadmill will NOT solve your fitness issue, as it’ll probably end up collecting dust, rate it with a “D” and you decide NOT to buy a treadmill… and now you can stop struggling with that decision. Now let’s apply this on your top issues that need a decision! What is the #1 issue you want to tackle (out of the 3 that you recorded above? Or a new major one that just popped in your head?) What did you decide about it? Did you find it was easier to make a decision this way? Record your thoughts below: Type your answer here – use as much space as you need… 3. In the box below, record another top issue on which you've been struggling to make a decision. Perhaps it’s regarding your social life, taking up a hobby, or finally asking that new friend out on a date. Type your answer here – use as much space as you need… 4. Now, using your priority A - D system, make a decision on the above issue. What did you decide? Did you find it was easier to make a decision this way? Record your thoughts below. Type your answer here – use as much space as you need… 5. In the box below, record your third issue on which you've been struggling to make a decision. Type your answer here – use as much space as you need… 6. Now, using your priority A - D system, make a decision on the above issue. What did you decide? Did you find it was easier to make a decision this way? Record your thoughts below. Type your answer here – use as much space as you need… *** - You can implement below the same process for any other decision you need a little help with. Just follow the same format as above.Well Done! You have completed Lesson 5.2 Planning Action Sheet! Closing Message Did you enjoy setting your priorities? It’s actually a fun and easy exercise, and now that you have them in order, you’ll start seeing your goals turn into reality, all as a result of making decisions based on those priorities. Here’s a reminder of how easy the system is. Here are this simple system’s ratings: A = Must Have B = Should Have C = Would be Nice D = Don’t count on it To implement this, simply list your priorities, then rate each with the A-D system; then take action based on your ratings. Make sure to incorporate this simple system into your quest to transform your retirement vision into reality. As you venture toward your dream with your priorities in mind, and consistently make your decisions and choices based on those priorities, your decision-making process will be easier and more consistent. Keep practicing making decisions using your priorities as a guide until it becomes second nature. The more you practice, the easier it becomes. This will go a long way to helping you move toward your goals and your big vision. I hope you find the priority system ignites your willpower and you feel ready to implement your action steps that will lead to the completion of your goals. This can be exciting, or a little scary… I know, I’ve been there. With that said, don’t be afraid of what’s coming in Lesson Six. In it, we’re going to deal with all of the fears you may have about your goals and vision. And, you’re going to learn how to use fear to your advantage. It’s my favorite lesson! Closing Message Now that you completed this lesson, are you starting to view fear from a new angle? Let’s look at the scariest moment in your life – what was it? I bet you remembered that moment instantly. When you look back at it now, do you see how you could have used fear to your advantage? Remember the two steps involved in using fear to your advantage. 1.Recognize that you are afraid 2.Accept and embrace your fears Once you have accepted and embraced your fears, use the power they give you. You now know that fear is nature’s way of making you focus on the task at hand. It sharpens your senses and makes you more alert. And you can use that fear to your advantage at the very moment it rears its little red devil head. Now that you identified your fears about each action step that takes you closer to your vision, and you addressed each of those individual fears with logical answers, you’ll find you can transform your fears into great strength. Learn to use your fears to your advantage. Don’t forget what Emerson said: Fear or not, “Once you make a decision, the universe conspires to make it happen.” Move forward welcoming and embracing your fears. All right, in this lesson we dealt with some fearsome issues, and you are probably ready for something lighter. In Lesson Seven, we’re going to have some fun. If you’re feeling blue, or depressed; or having issues keeping a positive attitude about retirement, then this is your lesson. How will you change that situation from a negative to positive? Perhaps the food will be great, and you might make a new friend who shares your same hobby interests. Remember you have to look for the bright side. Type your answer here – use as much space as you need… Well Done! You have completed Lesson 7.1 Planning Action Sheet! Closing Message You have always known that circumstances and events can happen without your ability to control them. And, often there’s not much you can do to change or direct them after they have occurred. However, in Lesson Seven, you learned there is something you can control; your perspective about events and circumstances. You get to choose how you feel, how you react, and with what outlook or attitude you will adopt to move forward. Remember that choosing is the key. You CAN choose what attitude to have in the moment and how you react to your surroundings. And yes, sometimes that choice has to start with acceptance For example, accepting that being at that social event makes your partner really happy, and you choosing to be happy, will make your partner happy. Keeping a positive perspective will affect your ability to persevere in your new direction. In taking your next big step beyond your professional career, chances are you’ll be in unfamiliar waters. You may encounter setbacks and discouragement; it’ll be up to you to recognize them as part for the course and don’t let them stop you in your quest. Remember that you can “Flip the Switch” of your attitude from negative to positive. More often than not, it’s up to you – it’s your choice! In the next lesson - Lesson Eight - we’re going to examine perseverance and the ability to stick to your dream until you succeed.
