Under each area of development notice if the child you are thinking about has mastered these skills or is working toward them. Additionally notice if what is listed matches your own expectations of what a child this age should be able to do. Note your thoughts about your own expectations for each area of development in this age group – do your expectations seem to be appropriate or do they need to be adjusted? As you are observing for social-emotional development, notice where the child is at on the continuum of development and how it might affect the child’s ability to separate from their parent/caregiver each day, their level of shyness, and their ability to get along with others. What strategies might you use to help a child with any of these things? Use the Syracuse University developmental checklist after you have observed the child to check off the skills the child has mastered. Your observations should show proof of the child knowing the skill.
