Victories for Toft, Nantwich while

rain halts ‘Edge and Hyde

HEAVY showers – and seven points each - halted the respective bids of Alderley Edge and Hyde to improve their ECB Premier League title hopes, while Toft and Nantwich scored significant victories to pass the 300- mark separated by only one point.

Toft edged back into top spot after a six wickets win at Bramhall whom they dismissed for 169-9. Rob Jones 3-60. Lancashire starlet Jones also shone with the bat, with 66 while Jake Hancock was unbeaten on 65 in a reply of 170-4.

Nantwich scored a more spectacular victory over Marple at Whitehouse Lane after their visitors had posted a decent tally of 201, James Morgan 43. Jimmy Warrington became the first Premiership bowler to top 50 wickets with another superb return of 6-79. There were fireworks after tea when Lancashire’s Liam Livingstone crashed an unbeaten 142 out of 202-2 in 25 overs, his 77 ball innings containing 128 in boundaries (17 fours and 10 sixes) . Bearing the brunt of this onslaught were Sam Harbinson, who took 1-68 off eight overs and Joe Cash, 0-73 off five. Marple drop to the foot of the table as a result.

Alderley Edge had to be content with seven points from an abandoned match at Macclesfield, which lasted only 41.4 overs before heavy showers halted proceedings. Alan Day scored 69 and Richard Wilkinson 60 in Alderley’s tally of 172-5, while 15 year-old Sam Perry, the MGS boy who had scored a fine century in the Bunbury Festival at Malvern College two days earlier, was out for two. He was one of the victims of a rejuvenated Barney Cutbill, who took 4-45 from 10 overs.

The Macc ground looked a picture after a series of modifications including an electronic scoreboard, controlled from a separate scoring hut, improved sightscreens and further upgrades to the pavilion carried out by chairman Simon Griffiths and a hard working committee

Hyde v Bowdon was cancelled with seven points each. As was the key relegation game near the foot of the table between Cheadle and Grappenhall.

Neston showed fight and spirit to beat T20-conscious Chester Boughton Hall in a low-scoring, 70 overs affair at Parkgate and move up to 10th place as a result. Neston were bowled out for 138, Simon Stokes 54, Harry Killoran 5-17, Ash Davis 4-39. But this was 33 too many for Chester who lost for the third successive Saturday when they were dismissed for 105, Ross Dixon 46, the match-winning bowlers being Paul Stimson, 4-28 and Simon Mugarva, 4-54.

Oulton miss chance

OULTON Park missed a chance to close the gap on First Division front-runners Sale and Timperley when they lost a spectacular game at Tattenhall,

Oulton rattled up 245-3 declared in 43 overs after Nick James, 91 and Martyn East, 90 had put on 187 for the first wicket. Tatters replied with 246-8, their winning runs coming from 55.4 overs (one lost to rain) with two balls to spare, Dan Power 73 not out, Ollie Thompson 58, Henry Dobson 50 - fresh from playing in the Bunbury Under 15s Festival.

Leaders Sale reached 45-2 at Cheadle Hulme when their match was abandoned, while chasers Timperley were surprisingly beaten by 43 runs at Christleton where the Mitch Renwick-less home side totalled 213, Tom Norris 96, Ben Paterson 54, Jack White 6-62. Timperley openers Mike Ness, 51 and Dan Cooper, 45 put on 88 but the innings slumped to 170 all out, Zaighum Abbas 4-53.

Urmston stay in the promotion picture after a five wickets win at Middlewich chasing 207-7 (Len Du Toit 68, Carl Turner 5-106) .Urmies replied with 211-5, Chris Parkinson 62.

Davenham picked up 25 important points with a four wickets home win against Didsbury, who totalled 202-8, Nick Anderson 78. The Butcher’s Stile men replied with 203-6, thanks to a fine 86 from Mark Greaves, a Cheshire Board Development Officer

The Oxton v Weaverham match was cancelled.

Mobberley mustered only 145, Will Berisford-Ince 36, John Copeland returning the splendid figures of 7-25 from 11.1 overs.

Chester again reach ECB t20

Regional final – the last eight

SCRAPING through against Stone, then beating Walsall before a large crowd, ECB National t20 champions Chester Boughton Hall have again reached the Regional Finals.

Skipper Lee Dixon’s squad did so by dominating the Area Finals Day at Stone on Sunday, throwing off their poor league form to beat host club Stone, the current North Staffs & South Cheshire League leaders by three runs, then overcoming Birmingham League giants Walsall by 11 runs in the final.

They now go through to the North-West Regional Final - the last eight in the country – on the ground of Liverpool Competition club Ormskirk - with Lancashire spinner Simon Kerrigan - on Sunday, August 16.

Their objective there will be to reach the National finals day for a second season running and retain the title at Cardiff’s Swalec Stadium, on Monday, September 1 when the event will be televised live on Sky.

Chester had good support at Stone including some weary travellers who rose at dawn to catch the fans’ bus from Filkins Lane at 7.30 p.m.

‘A long day, but worth it’

League secretary Geoff Wellsteed, who was among them, said: “I got out of bed at 5.45 a.m. to drive to Chester and got home very, very late it was a mighty tiring day. But worth it because those Chester lads are just wonderful at T20 cricket and never know when they’re beaten. They have a fine skipper in Lee Dixon and supporters every club would love to take about with them. The league can be proud of them all”.

In the first semi-final against hosts Stone, Chester totalled a below par 129-9, Warren Goodwin 39, Ross Dixon 29. But they kept Stone tied down and in a breathless finish their hosts closed on 126-6 after being set to score 14 off the last over. With 1-24 Jack Williams had the most economical bowling return.

Birmingham League Walsall beat Mochdre (North Wales Premier league) to set up the final when Chester batted well to reach an excellent 166-5, Rick Moore scoring a fluent 70 and Alex Money 34, both not out in a key stand worth 68.

Walsall were only 64-5 at half-way but improved and it needed the intervention of teenage off-spinner Harry Killoran with two wickets from successive deliveries to curb them. In the end, Walsall needed 28 off two overs and closed on 145 all out with five balls unbowled. Killoran finished with a creditable 4-28.

Forties’ quarter-finals take shape

WITH one week remaining, only Sale Silverbacks and Neston have won their respective divisions and earned home draws in the quarter-finals of the Over Forties section.

Don Hurst’s Neston clinched the West title despite their last game, at home to Irby, being called off because the stand-in groundsman had failed to apply the covers and the square was unfit after rain. Chester Blazers and Oxton can both take the runners-up spot .

Sale Silverbacks clinched the North-East title by beating Bowdon Vale Vikings, with Cheadle Hulme finishing as runners-up with a home win over Cheadle.

It’s holders Toft or Grappenhall for the Central division’s top two places, while any two of Marple, Bredbury Saints and Poynton Legends will fill the top two spots in the South-East East group on offer on Wednesday this week.

Quarter-final draw (to be played on Wednesday, August 12 or by Sunday, August 16):

West winners NESTON v Central runners-up GRAPPENHALL or TOFT; Central winners TOFT or GRAPPENHALL v West runners-up CHESTER or OXTON; North East winners SALE SILVERBACKS v South East runners-up BREDBURY, MARPLE or POYNTON; South East winners BREDBURY, POYNTON or MARPLE v North East runners-up CHEADLE HULME.

If teams finish level on group points with same wins and defeats, outcome is resolved by results against one another. If still equal by a toss of coin.

Greater Manchester League’s 52 founder members

THE identities of the 52 founder-members of the newly-formed Greater Manchester Cricket League, which pitches wickets in April, 2016, have been released.

The list contains many well-known clubs from a variety of existing leagues in South Lancashire – but none from the Vivio Cheshire County League who have remained loyal despite several in the Manchester area being ‘approached’. In alphabetic order the clubs who have joined are:

Ashton Ladysmith, Astley & Tyldesley, Bamford Fieldhouse, Blackley, Bolton, Bolton Indians, Brooksbottom, Bury, Clifton, Deane & Derby, Denton, Denton St. Lawrence, Denton West, Droylsden, Dukinfield, East Lancs Paper Mills, Edenfield, Edgworth, Egerton, Elton, Elton Vale, Failsworth Macedonians, Flixton, Flowery Field, Fothergill & Harvey, Friends United,

Ground inspections are to be carried out through August after which it is expected four divisions will be formed, based on current results, facilities and history with promotion and relegation operating immediately. A group of sponsors is being recruited.

Junior cricket will be regionalised to reduce travel. The league steering committee have been given a grant of £15,000 by the Lancashire Cricket Board to help get started.

Cheshire’s poor start against Berks

NANTWICH bowlers had a good opening day, but not so the batsmen, when Cheshire fielded a much-changed team for their Unicorns county championship game against Berkshire at Alderley Edge starting on Sunday.

Berkshire were dismissed for 213 in 71 overs, the main wicket-takers being Nantwich pacemen Adam Syddall, with 4-61 and Jimmy Warrington, 3-63.

Without their Chester regulars, on club duty in the ECB National t20 Area Finals at Stone, Cheshire replied with 79-6 from 36 overs by close of play, only the home club’s Alan Day, 37 not out, standing firm. Danny Berry, Adam Worrall and debutant Tyrone Lawrence all failed to score.

Play continues from 11 a.m. on Monday and Tuesday.

The Cheshire team is: Danny Woods captain, Danny Berry, James Duffy (Hyde), Calum Rowe, Adam Worrall wicket-keeper, Alan Day (Alderley Edge), Jimmy Warrington, Adam Syddall (Nantwich), Tyrone Lawrence (Sale), Nick Anderson (Didsbury), Jack Ward (Macclesfield). 12th man is Nick James (Oulton Park).

Umpires Quiz: by Alistair Davies

LAST WEEK: A fair delivery is deflected from the wrist band attached to the striker’s glove holding the bat onto his helmet, then caught by the wicket-keeper. There is an appeal – should it be upheld?

ANSWER: The striker is out Caught. The wristband of the gloved hand holding the bat is deemed to be part of the striker’s bat. Contact with the helmet does not nullify the catch. Law 6.8 (b) iii

THIS WEEK’S POSER: There is a mix-up in the running between two batsmen. The non-striker overtakes the striker behind the popping crease at the striker’s end when the wicket at the bowler’s end is put down. Now then: which batsman should be given out?

Sixties reach play-offs

CHESHIRE have again qualified for the Last 16 play-offs in the National Over 60s championship.

Cheshire beat Shropshire by six wickets in their penultimate group game at Frankton on Tuesday last week. Scores:

Shropshire 121(Bob Yardley 3-21, Mike Cushion 2-12); Cheshire 122-4 (John Edwards 53).

Cheshire were due to visit Lancashire on Tuesday this week.

2nd XI Finals Day date

THE League 2nd XI Finals Day is to be staged at Warrington on Sunday, August 16 starting at 12 noon.

An error on the League website stated that the event was to be played last Sunday, August 2.

SPEAKER GILES PULLS OUT

BOOKED as guest speaker at the League’s ever-popular Presentation Dinner at The Mere on Friday, October 2, Lancashire and former England coach Ashley Giles has cried off due to a family commitment.

Strenuous efforts are being made to find a top-class replacement for Giles, the man who described new Test hero Steve Finn – probably rightly at the time - as ‘unselectable” during England’s last tour to Australia in 2013-14.
