Hungry Shark

Comparing sets

Make a copy of the shark patterns on page 39. Also copy and cut out several fish patterns from page 39. Attach two sets of fish to your board, making sure one set has more fish. Lead students in counting the sets of fish. Help them determine which set has more. Say, "The shark wants to eat as many fish as he can. Which group of fish would he rather eat?" Then prompt a student to attach the appropriate shark between the sets of fish. Rearrange the fish and play another round of this game!

Making Waves

Shape identification

Obtain a blue sheet or shower curtain (ocean). Also label a class supply of fish cutouts with desired shapes. (If desired, use the fish pattern on page 39.) Instruct each child to hold the edge of the ocean; then place the fish in the center. Encourage youngsters to shake the ocean vigorously to create gigantic waves. When all the fish have spilled onto the floor, have each student retrieve a fish. Next, name one of the shapes. Then have each child with a corresponding fish toss it back into the ocean. Continue until all the fish have been returned.
