Needful Notes: RJS trip to Miami, Fl. on 03/12/2010 was only possible after 5-year retirement as M.D. with US family visa & Cuban temporal exit permit –first trip with wife abroad. While active M.D. the Cuban government blocked him 18 applications to WHO consultant positions abroad in 1990-2009, 33 exchanges in the US in 1993-2009 & all exchanges abroad in 2002-09. RJS was faculty 48-yr of Havana University SOM class 1962-9. Due to critical thinking/political troubles he was separated from CNIC by Fidel Castro, 1970; later separated from HDI, NCI, CRC & punished to work in PC polyclinics three times & in Nicaragua 1988-90. He was member of the communist youth 1962-5; 1967-9 & party 1992-2002, separated for denouncing abuses/excesses/injustices of party leaders. Many of his articles were rejected by Cuban journals censorship. He couldn’t categorize as faculty 1970, 76, 79, being Cuban pathfinder of clinical research/trials/epidemiology's trainings/manuals. He couldn’t defend his PhD. Thesis & become full faculty, 1987, emeritus, 1992, member of NAS as disciples did. He couldn’t have any privilege as faculty -recognition, wage, clerkships, fellowships, Sabbath-yr abroad, acquire car/home, etc. He was punished for dissenting all his life the party policy, 2002, and banned all exchanges paid from abroad. He was retired as MD, 2005 to do own research, teaching & travel after government’s liberation in 2010.
