Chi Kung-Longevity Arts General Studies

A long and vigorous life with good health is available for those who rigorously follow this training regimen. This work is designed to improve musculature, circulation, chief organ functions and the immune system. Some of the training involves a great deal of body movement (but not strenuous), and some has no movement at all. The approach depends on the student’s condition, and his habits. Health and longevity training has existed for over 4,000 years, first in India, then later in China and Tibet. The program we design together will issue from those teachings.

Essential Components of Long-Life Training:

← A commitment from you in following the training with sincere effort over an agreed-upon period. Without your own daily dedication to the program and its exercises, little benefit will accrue in terms of health/longevity. You are responsible for what comes from the training.

← Movement systems (e.g Tai-chi, chi-kung);

← Exercises to stimulate muscles, nerves, joints, endocrine systems.

If you have health issues or no previous training, you start with the basics. Beginners may start with simple movements, slowly graduating to the more complex. Each person has particular needs, and I will draw up a suitable program for you. Keep in mind that needs change as conditioning improves, so your training programs change.

Many Taoists recluses and Buddhists monks dwelled in mountains and forests to observe, listen, and meditate in order to gather deeper metaphysical understandings and greater knowledge of nature than is possible when living in the milieu of human society. Suffice it to say that these things take time to find out. Vitality and longevity came to assume an unexpected importance: one discovers more when prepared by a lifetime of these practices.

For thousands of years men and women have practiced and developed these breath control techniques. You can experience the benefits for yourself.

The breathing and energy exercises are grouped into three broad areas, performing unique (yet integrated) functions:

← Therapeutic chi kung, i.e. treatment of imbalances in body, emotion, mind. The long-term focus is on illness prevention and elimination of sickness.

← Longevity training combines the therapeutic class of chi-kung exercises with intentional stimulation of endocrine and higher-order organs. This link is for the professional training course for attainment of instructor’s certificate.

← Martial chi kung encompasses core training for the serious classical martial artist.

All chi training shares common modalities and results through improving your physical well-being, calming the mind, and strengthening the will. Full concentration and daily practice are required for desired effects.

Within this school, no matter what the motivation of the student, the causal focus is on the applications of chi studies. Beginning with identifying the nature of internal energy, we move onto understanding its methods of generation, control, and use.

I studied many of these techniques at the Chi Kung Institute in San Francisco. The instructor was Chiu Lim Chan, age 54 at the time (1975), who looked 35 and had a flat belly as hard as a stone. He got the teachings on Wu Tang Mountain from a 180 year-old man. That was in 1940.

The Core of the General Studies:

• Ba Duan Jin (8 Pieces of Gold Brocade)

• Rou Kung – soft style chi kung

• T’ai-chi Chuan
