Up until this time they are protected from infectious diseases through drinking the colostrum (first milk) from their mother. This vital protection begins to wane from 2 months of age. After their first vaccination, your puppy can play in your garden as long as no unvaccinated dogs have been there. For full protection against diseases such as Canine Distemper, Canine Infectious Hepatitis Virus, and Parvovirus, a booster 3-4 weeks later is required. Please see our additional handouts for more information about the serious diseases that these vaccines prevent.Dewormer: Worms are extremely common in puppies, and can cause problems for growing puppies, as well as cause serious disease in humans. This is why we recommend treatment for intestinal worms with a veterinary prescribed product. We feel it is so important that your puppy will receive the initial 3 doses complimentary. Puppy Training: This is a good time to begin training and to get them used to lots of different people. Remember puppies learn by playing, and they learn much more rapidly when you encourage their good behavior rather than when you punish their bad behavior. Dental Hygiene: Dental disease is a common disease in older animals that can be painful and cause nasty infections. Regular teeth brushing and dental checks can help to prevent this. Now is the time to start getting your puppy used to having his teeth brushed. Pet Insurance: There are a variety of insurance options available. Researching which one is right for you and your budget takes time, but can often be worth the effort. Nutrition: This is also the time to start thinking about nutrition. There are many dog foods available and the choice can be very confusing. Please request information from our technicians or veterinarians about which diet to feed. Puppy’s Second Visit(3-4 weeks after the first puppy visit)Second office call Second series of DHLPP Bordetella (kennel cough vaccine) – optionalDog Exposure Limits: Once your puppy has received his vaccine boosters, you may begin to introduce him to other dogs. Time for the kennel cough vaccine. Kennel cough is a common problem in dogs, and can affect animals that have never been near a kennels - it can cause a nasty cough. We recommend you vaccinate your dog every year against kennel cough, even if it isn't going into kennels if it has contact with other dogsDewormers: It is important to continue to treat your puppy as described at the first visit. At his second visit, we can quickly check your puppy’s weight to ensure he or she is receiving just the right amount of dewormer and that he or she is growing appropriately.Regular flea + tick prevention: Unfortunately fleas and ticks are a year round nuisance, which can cause real problems for you and your pet. This is why we advise you use a regular preventative product throughout the year. Puppy’s Third Visit(3-4 weeks after the second visit or >12 weeks of age or older)Third office call Third series of DHLPP—lasts 1 year Rabies Vaccine—lasts 1 yearMicrochip (can be given during spay/neuter while pet is under anesthesia) Schedule spay/neuter (due at 6-8 months of age) ?Spay/Neuter: If you are not intending to breed your puppy, it is important to neuter or spay your puppy at a young age. We recommend between the ages of 6 to 8 months, and most importantly before your puppy’s first heat. Microchipping: When your puppy can go out and play, you want to make certain you don't lose them. Microchipping provides the best chance of getting your pet back if you are ever unfortunate enough to lose themReminders: 1 year after your puppy’s first Rabies vaccine, you will receive a reminder in the mail to come back for booster shots—they will last 3 years with the exception of Bordatella, which is necessary every year.
