Mrs. Anderson’s regular/advanced 6th grade math

Welcome to Davidson Middle School! I am glad that you have been assigned to my class this year. Please read through this letter to acquaint yourself with how I conduct my class and what I expect of you as a student.

I will be teaching you based upon the Florida Standards. These curriculum standards include all concepts that are required of 6th graders and are those that are tested on the Florida Standards Assessment (FSA). If you would like access to these standards they can be found on the Florida Department of Education website at or .

Textbook:

• Florida Math—Course 1

This is the textbook that Okaloosa County has adopted as a tool to assist with mastering the Florida Standards. These are consumable. These books will not be going home with the student. If you would like a hard back book from the year 2014 to check out as a reference to keep at home, it will be available at any time during the school year. It will not be our current text book, but it contains many of the same concepts for reference. If you check out a hardback textbook it must be returned to me by the last day of school. Each student will receive a code in order to access this year’s book on-line for the school year.

Materials Needed For Class:

• Pencils—ALL MATH IS TO BE COMPLETED IN PENCIL.

• Two Pocket Folder—to be kept with you specifically for math

• Paper—Please have in your binder at all times.

• Agenda Book—an agenda book can be bought when your student rents his/her locker. It is to be used to record all assignments daily. It is also used to keep track of your passes so it MUST come with you each day to class.

• TWO Bound Notebooks (not spiral)—these will be kept in class. One will be used for the daily bell-ringer and the second will be used as your interactive student notebook (ISN). It may be taken home at any time, but MUST return with you each day to school.

• Three expo markers (optional)—these will be used for working math on desks and white boards.

General Daily Class Routine:

• Enter classroom—sharpen your pencil if necessary and be seated by the bell. Socializing needs to be done in the hall before entering class. Pencil, paper, notebook and any assigned work need to be with you when entering class. You will not be allowed to go to your locker after the bell without using one of your passes for the nine weeks.

• Work on bell-ringer—after roll has been taken we will check the bell-ringer together.

• Lesson Presentation—new concepts are presented daily, so regular attendance is very important. It can be difficult to catch up even after a one day absence.

• Individual work time—daily assignments will be given in class. We will work in small group on specific skills each week.

• Homework—two sheets of homework will be given to you each Friday. Previously learned standards will be practiced through purposeful spiraling. Homework should be completed and turned in by the following Friday. Homework will never be assigned from the textbook.

What if you are absent?

• All work that was due on the day you were absent is due the day you return to school.

• Tests and quizzes are announced well in advance so missing a test review does not exempt you from taking the test on a test day. If you are absent on a test/quiz day you will take the test/quiz the day you return to school.

• When you return to school it is your responsibility to check with Mrs. Anderson for missed assignments. If your absence is excused, you have five (5) school days to complete and turn in assignments. You must also copy any notes that you missed. You can ask another student or Mrs. Anderson for the notes that you missed.

How will you be graded?

There are three (3) categories of grades the Davidson math department uses:

• Daily work is assigned each day. Time is given in class to complete as much work as possible. ALL WORK MUST BE SHOWN to receive full credit on assignments. If you need help on an assignment….ASK FOR HELP!

• Quizzes (formative assessment) will be given a minimum of bi-weekly unless otherwise noted in your agenda book. These are open book and open note. When you get back your graded quiz you will have five school days to rework (AND SHOW YOUR WORK) the incorrect quiz problems for half credit. For example: You made a 60% on a quiz that had 10 questions. You missed 4 questions. You rework them all correctly, show your work, and turn the quiz back in within five days and I will change your grade to 80% (one-half of the 40% you originally missed).

• Tests (summative assessment) are typically given every third week and assess what has been covered in class the past three weeks. Tests are closed book and closed notes.

Parent Information:

Please check your child’s agenda book daily. Behavior steps and messages to parents will be communicated through the agenda book.
