The majority of poppies made throughout the United States are made by disabled veterans.National Poppy DayThe American Legion Family recognizes the importance of honoring the fallen and supporting the living who have worn our nation’s uniform. That is why the American Legion Family called upon Congress to designate the Friday before Memorial Day as National Poppy Day.Poppy Days have become a familiar tradition in almost every American community either at Veterans Day or Memorial Day. This distribution of the bright red memorial flower to the public is one of the oldest and most widely recognized programs of the American Legion Auxiliary.Goals:To have 100% Unit reporting;To have Units spread the In Flanders Field story to their community;To participate in National Poppy Day;To have at least three Districts submit Poppy Posters;To increase overall poppy donations by $100To have Units submit pictures of projects using poppiesJudging Posters:Each Unit judges their students posters and submits the 1st placeposter in each Class at their District Conference.Each District judges their posters and submits the 1st place posterin each Class to the Department no later than May 1st.The Department Chairman will have all District Posters judged and submit the 1st place poster in each Class to National by June 1st.Monetary Awards will be given to the Unit for all Department 1st, 2nd and 3rd Place winners in each Class. Requirements may also be found on HYPERLINK "; and Poppy Poster Requirements: Each poster shall have a fitting slogan not to exceed 10 words.Articles – “a,” “and,” “an,” “the” – are not to be counted as words.the words “buddy” and “buy” cannot be used.2. The words “American Legion Auxiliary” must be used in the design ofthe poster and will not be counted in the 10-word count.3. Each poster must include a picture of the red Flanders Field poppy.4.The department shall determine the closing date for the unit contest.Posters are to be judged at your District Conference.5.The poster shall be on 11x14” poster board. (Drawing paper will notbe accepted).The United States flag may be used as long as there are no infractionsof the flag code.7.Posters will be judged using the following criteria:a. 50% - poster appeal (layout, message, originality)b.40% - artistic ability (design and color)c.10% - neatness8.Media used shall be watercolors, crayons, powder or oil paint,handmade paper cutouts, ink or textures, acrylics, pencils and markers.9.Written in ink on the back of the poster (not attached) shall be the classin which the entry is submitted, the name, address, age and grade ofthe contestant and the name of the department.10. Submissions become property of the American Legion Auxiliary.Through submission of artwork, contestants and their legal guardians’grant non-exclusive reproduction and publication rights to the workssubmitted and agree to have their names and artwork published forcommercial use without additional compensation or permission.11. The poster shall be the work of only one individual.12. The label “In Memoriam” from the veteran-made poppy may not beused. ................
