A fix for a problem you may not know you have in Server 2008

Most people look at the event log viewer occasionally to keep an eye on any issues that may be lurking; but few people dig down too deep.

The tree in the left hand pane shows the commonly accessed “Custom Views” and “Windows logs”; and under that is the less often viewed “Applications and Services logs”. Opening that node will reveal a number of other sections and a folder “Microsoft” with a sub-folder “Windows”. Opening those will reveal a large number of other folders.

Looking down through that list, you should see a folder called “Known Folders”; opening that will reveal a node called “Operational”. Looking in that section you may find a large number of warning messages.

These generally take the format:

Error 0x80070003 occurred while verifying known folder {b97d20bb-f46a-4c97-ba10-5e3608430854} with path 'C:\Windows\system32\config\systemprofile\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\Startup'.

Some people have read the error message as being caused by various hard drive or RAID controller issues, possibly by incompatible drivers. However, in most cases, the error seems to occur because of a folder redirection process within the system; and the warnings appear if the target folders do not exist.

If you check the locations listed in the warnings, you may well find that the specified folders do not exist; and often creating appropriate folders with the right name will be sufficient to prevent the warnings from being logged. However, on some 64 bit systems, although the warning may specify “C:\windows\system32\config\systemprofile” it may also be necessary to create similar folders in the same level of the SYSWOW64 folder, e.g.

“ C:\windows\SysWOW64\config\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\Startup”

Generally, these two procedures will resolve most of the warning messages; but occasionally, it may also be necessary to check the permissions of the folders. If they have not inherited the “SYSTEM” account from the parent folder, warnings may continue to be logged until the appropriate permission has been added to the child folders.
