Special Section: Russian Studies

As we were compiling this library we tried to think carefully about the conditions in Russian universities, the ways in which the Oxford Russia Fund wishes to help these universities, and the most effective ways of selecting useful books for you. Here are the basic principles we have taken into account:

(1) The books chosen had to be academically respectable, and endorsed by at least one person teaching at Oxford University. In almost cases, the lists were compiled with advice from several academics, some of whom then scrutinized carefully the lists proposed by their colleagues. This does not mean that any book can be regarded as absolutely authoritative. Many of them, when published, provided widespread debate and disagreement, but in each case they were recognised as contributing to scholarly discussion.

(2) It was not the intention of the Oxford Russia Fund to include textbooks – i.e. books written specially for students to help them cover a particular course, with questions, exercises, and a classroom approach. We have tried to provide an academic library in which the material is useful irrespective of changing curriculum demands.

(3) In subjects like Philosophy and Literature where many of the books included in the lists are classical texts, we chose editions which included as much annotation as possible. Annotation is not interpretation, but quite often our well-annotated books include discussion of disputed or obscure passages. We sometimes chose one edition over another on the grounds that the editor had provided an excellent commentary.

(4) We have searched for readable, accessible works. There is no point in sending out books which are written in an academic jargon which is incomprehensible to most British readers. On the other hand, not all essential scholarly books are easy to read, so we have tried to distinguish between necessary and unnecessary difficulty. Specialist works on all subjects are going to require full intellectual attention from the reader. We hope that readers with specialist interests will already be familiar with the basic material and will be able to cope with any unusual vocabulary and strenuous stylistic demands.

(5) Although you are receiving a substantial Oxford Russia Fund library, the lists for each subject had to be highly selective. As far as possible we have chosen books which are either 'classic' works which have lasted for decades or longer, or mainstream contemporary works. We have also, where appropriate, provided recent criticism and commentaries which offer a wide range of approaches to understanding the classical works.

Since we cannot offer comprehensive academic libraries on any one topic, we have tried to bear in mind the needs of students by providing the basic books considered to be essential reading in British Universities, and, at the same time, to provide a variety of critical books with up-to-date bibliographies that will help the researcher to look for more recommended reading.

(6) The Oxford Russia Fund was particularly eager to ensure that each university received a generous collection of books on the Arts. We decided to include subjects such as music, even if no music is taught in your university, because we believe that music and fine arts should be available for the benefit of anyone who wants to develop their education, whether they are internal or external readers. We have therefore provided all universities with – for example – the magnificently comprehensive Groves Dictionary of Music, a collection of art books on Western Art, especially English Art, and some notable books on film.

(7) The Oxford Russia Fund Library is not intended to cover the Natural Sciences, Mathematics, Finance and Business, Technology including Computer Technology, and books primarily intended for professional development and training. Other funds are available for these areas of study.

Obviously there are bound to be 'border areas' where books in the social sciences may or may not come within our remit. After discussion with Russian colleagues, we decided to provide some books in Human Geography (which overlap with Anthropology, Architecture and Sociology). We have also provided some books in Developmental Psychology where the issues discussed seemed to overlap with books on Education. The fullest libraries are in Literature, History, Philosophy and Politics.

(8) When selecting the books for the ORF Library we also considered languages and publishers. Almost all the books are in English which is the foreign language most studied in Russia; moreover other funds provide Russian libraries with books in French, German, etc. The majority of our books are written by British scholars since the Oxford Russia Fund has a British (and Oxford) bias. However a substantial minority are by American scholars because we selected American books whenever they seemed to be the outstanding or most useful books on a particular topic. British and American universities regularly use scholarly works written and published in either country, but there remain striking differences of approach and of culture. In general we have reflected the British approach to each of these academic disciplines.

In Britain, the major academic publishers are Oxford University Press, Cambridge University Press, Routledge, Blackwell, some of Pearson Education (formerly Longman) and smaller specialist publishers of, for example, books on Law. We selected monographs on the basis of recommendations by academics, irrespective of the publisher. However, in many cases where we were selecting commentaries, editions of essays and reference books where the advantages of one series published by one academic publisher over another series published by another academic publisher were not clear, we usually selected the Oxford University Press series.

OUP is the largest academic publisher in Britain with an outstanding record both in Britain and America. The Oxford Russia Fund is ready to promote Oxford scholarship. Therefore you will find that almost all the Reference Books, most of the classical literary texts and many of the philosophical works, together with critical studies in all disciplines are published by Oxford University Press. However we have not hesitated to chose an academic series from another publisher (for example the 'Cambridge Texts in the History of Political Thought') whenever it seemed to provide better or more suitable material.

One admirable OUP series is their 'Very Short Introductions'. These are small books of about 120 pages, written by specialists for an intelligent but non-specialist audience. The authors were required to write clearly and directly, avoiding jargon and providing examples that would be helpful to non-specialists. The series has received excellent reviews and offers much to Russians who want to get an idea of the British approach to a topic but who do not want to struggle through hundreds of pages of English. Almost all the books in this series appear in one or other of the subject libraries.

(9) In general we have provided single copies of each work. In the case of English literature we have, in a few cases, provided multiple copies where we knew that these texts would be heavily used. In addition, some duplicates will be found because they are essential books in, for example, both Politics and Philosophy.

After discussion with Russian academics in Philology, we have also provided special sections on 'Russian Studies' and on 'British Studies'. The books in these sections are not divided into academic disciplines; they represent different aspect of British scholarship on Russian, and different aspects of British coverage of our own history, society and culture. Many of the books in these sections also appear elsewhere.

(10) Some academic books have been translated into Russian, particularly books on Economics. The situation is changing all the time, and information is patchy and contradictory, so it is not easy to decide which books to remove from our list on the grounds that they are already available in Russia. In any case, it is often useful to compare the original with the translation, especially when much of the critical apparatus of a work is missing in the Russian translation. So, with rare exceptions, we have not tried to delete books from our list as they become available in Russian translation.

The list of books for each subject follows. Each begin with an introductory note telling you more about the selection for your speciality. Of course you, in consultation with the librarian, are free to rearrange the categories in which we have placed each book, if our plan does not fit in with your other arrangements. This is booklet is intended to be helpful, not prescriptive.

Anthropology

The books on anthropology were mostly chosen by an Oxford anthropologist who has worked with Russian anthropologists. He proposed a wide range of books which he has organised into several sections, but he says that many of the books could quite reasonably appear in another section. His idea was to offer examples of good books from all aspects of the subject.

Art and Architecture

Russian libraries have fine, beautifully printed art books so we have concentrated on books which have distinctive Western ways of looking at paintings, or which take a fresh historical approach to their subject. Gombrich and Berger are both classics in this country; the books by Acton were specifically written to help students with no specialized knowledge. Among the books devoted to individual painters we have emphasized (where possible) the work of British artists who may be less well-known to Russians. The nineteenth and twentieth century books have been chosen partly to show different aesthetic, social and political approaches to art, but also to cover the major movements and controversial developments in recent years.

Economics

It seems likely that many of these books have been translated – or partly translated – or partly included into collections of essays. Also, some of the volumes were not originally written in English. However, many economists have looked at this list and believe that it would be useful for Russians to see how the ideas have been translated into English, and hence how the vocabulary of economic theory has been developed. They consider that this is a solid 'classical' library of economics scholarship which should be appreciated by any university.

We have not provided books exclusively on marketing and business studies, although students in this area should find plenty to help them. In the later sections we have concentrated on developmental and international economic theory and practice.

English and American Literature

This Library consists of British Literary Texts (Classical and modern texts up to approximately1960, and Contemporary texts from about 1960); American Literary Texts (Classical to Contemporary); Reference and Criticism; Children's Literature. The fullest lists are of British literature, but American Literature has a wide-ranging selection. We have paid attention to the needs of Russian teachers who want to recommend contemporary fiction to their students, and include a long list of recent British writing which is highly admired among readers and critics. Whereas all the other lists are in approximate chronological order, this 'contemporary' list is arranged in three parts (fiction, poetry and drama) and within each part, the texts are given in alphabetical order of the author's name. Most of these writers are still alive, and there is no obvious way to distinguish them chronologically. A few authors straddle the 1960 date, before which the texts are considered to be 'classic and modern' and after which they have been grouped as 'contemporary'. Greene becomes a 'classic' writer, Larkin and Golding are both listed as 'contemporary'.

Some teachers will find the list rather surprising: why is there no Galsworthy? Why so much emphasis on George Eliot and Thomas Hardy? This list reflects the British estimation of the importance of these authors. Galsworthy has not been part of the 'canon' of major British writers for many years. George Eliot is one of our finest novelists, by many people regarded as our greatest novelist. With these books we hope to acquaint Russian readers with our 'classical' writers, and with many new and contemporary novels and poems. Wherever possible we have chosen annotated texts in order to help readers to understand what is happening, and to understand the tone and nuances of the language.

British Literature: Texts

We begin with a short list of anthologies and the Bible in the 'King James' translation which was used by most of authors in the list. Knowing the Bible, especially this translation, is important for readers who wish to understand the world, the ideas and the allusions of most writers before the twentieth century (and some of the twentieth century). The edition we have chosen is specifically intended for readers who want to study the Bible as literature or to learn about its influence on poets and novelists.

Thereafter this list is arranged in chronological order. Within periods where there are many writers, we have grouped them according to the period when they were at the peak of their writing, rather than attending precisely to their birth dates.

In the case of Shakespeare we have provided a 'Complete Works' in one volume PLUS individual annotated copies of each play and of the poems PLUS extra copies of Romeo and Juliet, Hamlet, A Midsummer Night's Dream, King Lear, The Tempest, Macbeth and Twelfth Night. We hope the extra copies will be useful for seminars where these plays are read and discussed in English.

Reference, Criticism and Commentaries

This list does not attempt to be comprehensive in any way. The works on 'general criticism' and 'criticism on periods and authors' have been selected to represent different approaches and different levels of difficulty, so that students can accustom themselves to the pluralism of English literary criticism. The authors chosen for special attention reflect widespread agreement among British critics that these are among our most important and significant authors.

We have provided one overview of American literature.

Children's Literature

English Philology Departments in Russian Universities often pay a lot attention to 'Children's Classical Literature'. Unfortunately the choice of 'classics' gives a limited and distorted picture of children's fiction during the twentieth century. The following list of books, mostly British but including a few American favourites, are all are considered to be classics by readers and publishers. One criterion is that all these books are read with pleasure by adults as well as children. A few are intended for young children (Winnie the Pooh, Just So Stories, but most are for children of 8 or 9 upwards; many of them are intended for 12-16 year-olds, but are read by intelligent younger readers.

History

This list of books is based on the recommendations of many Oxford historians. The Classical History section has been chosen to reflect those aspects of Greek and Roman history and culture which are not discussed so much in Russia. (For example, we have not included many books about the Roman Army and War, since Russian historians have written a great deal on these themes, but we have included books on Roman education, a topic which is rarely investigated.)

The Mediaeval Section includes historical studies of the wider Europe as well as specialist studies on British politics, British monarchs, and our culture and social development during these centuries. The largest section is of modern British history, since this is almost unrepresented in Russian libraries. We have also provided a good selection of books on European history, as seen from a British or an American point of view. The books on American history are far fewer but include some major classics of historical writing. Russian colleagues have asked us to include a few books on Russian history, which we think may be of interest by showing some 'Western' attitudes to Russia. Western studies of contemporary Russia can be found in the Politics Section, or in the special section on 'Russian Studies'.

Most of the books we have chosen are either classics or the current standard books on the subject, which Oxford students, for example, would be expected to read. We have also included several of the very popular and useful 'Very Short Introductions' published by Oxford University Press, and a few books intended as introductions for students.

Human Geography; Environmental Issues.

Geography as an academic discipline straddles the social sciences and the natural sciences. We have not included any works which are essentially concerned with physical geography. In Britain a large part of the syllabus is devoted to Human Geography which covers topics such as town planning, work and international trade, and the interaction of culture and climate. Many books which also explore these topics can be found in 'Anthropology', 'Architecture' and 'Sociology'. The small section of books on Climate Change and the environment reflect the importance of this contemporary problem and give you the chance to read of some of the best known British spokesmen and specialists on the subject.

Journalism and Media Studies

This selection contains a number of important works about the problems of the media in a democracy. Issues analysed in these books include the relationship between the media and politics; the relationship between media and government; the problems of bias, and the responsibilities faced by investigative journalists. Some of these books deal exclusively with British issues, often very critically. Such criticism and the issues raised should be useful for young journalists. We also include classics of reporting by James Cameron and James Fenton.

As explained in the Introduction to this booklet, we have not normally supplied any books dealing with professional training, but since attitudes towards the role and responsibilities of the journalist are significantly different in Russia and Britain we thought that one or two such books would provide useful material for your students to discuss and analyse different societies and the meaning of civil society.

Law and Criminology

Lawyers point out that many books on law go rapidly out-of-date, particularly those which deal with case law or with specific reforms to the system. We are also aware that English law is very different from Russian law, so that many issues relevant to our judiciary are not concerns of yours. We have asked our lawyer advisors to select one or two books in each area of law, with several books devoted to International Law and Human Rights, and to areas of Consumer Law. Some of these will have been translated, but your students should find it useful to consult the English originals.

The books on Criminology have been selected by criminologists trained as lawyers. You can find other books on Crime and Society in the section on 'Sociology'.

Music

Since many Russian Universities do not have courses on music, the Oxford Russia Fund is supplying this Music Library for the benefit of all your teachers, students, and enthusiasts who are outside the university but who can have access to these books. Grove's Dictionary is hugely comprehensive. We have also provided some dictionaries and companions to special genres of music.

The other sections are self-explanatory. We have included a few biographies and studies of individual composers where we felt that biographer's work showed profound and original scholarship.

Philosophy

There is a great difference between Russian notions of 'Philosophy' and British (and Western) notions of 'Philosophy'. These differences are clearly reflected in the choice of books.

We decided not to include English translations of the classic philosophical writers such as Descartes and Leibniz because we can assume that you have them in Russian and in French or German. However we have provided English translations of Plato and Aristotle since philosophers are always debating the exact meanings of their works. English translations with commentaries should be illuminating, even for Russians.

The commentaries and the works of contemporary philosophers reflect a tradition very different from yours. The Oxford academics who made these selections have tried to cover all aspects of the subject; obviously, coming from the Oxford philosophical tradition they have emphasised analytical philosophy and philosophical logic. We have also included some elementary works intended for students of philosophy, as well as the Very Short Introductions. These elementary and more popular works are included among the commentaries in Section 2.

This list is divided into three sections:

(1) A selection of Philosophy reference books and handbooks.

(2) A selection of Philosophical works and commentaries.

(3) A selection of the popular 'Very Short Introductions' which should be helpful to students.

Special Section: British Studies

This is a small collection of books that provides several basic approaches to British Studies: through history, sociology, politics, geography, biography and literature. They have been chosen to show that it is possible to treat 'country studies' as a serious subject and not as a gathering of outdated trivia. All these books and many more can also be found in the sections on History, Literature, etc. There are, for example, hundreds of novels, anthologies, historical studies of particular periods, accounts of English families, ethnicity, religion, children and much more in the broader academic sections.
