Course Description: Mathematics II: (Geometry/ Algebra II/ Statistics)

(Prerequisite: Successful completion of Math I)

This is the second course in the sequence of secondary mathematics courses designed to ensure that students are college and work ready. This course requires students to:

• Students will represent and operate with complex numbers.

• Students will investigate step and piecewise functions, including greatest

integer and absolute value functions.

• Students will explore exponential functions.

• Students will analyze quadratic functions in the forms f(x) = ax2 + bx + c

• and f(x) = a(x – h)2 + k.

• Students will solve quadratic equations and inequalities in one variable.

• Students will explore inverses of functions.

• Students will identify and use special right triangles.

• Students will define and apply sine, cosine, and tangent ratios to right

triangles.

• Students will understand the properties of circles.

• Students will find and compare the measures of spheres.

• Using sample data, students will make informal inferences about

population means and standard deviations.

• Students will determine an algebraic model to quantify the association

between two quantitative variables.

• Students will solve problems (using appropriate technology).

• EOCT

Standards: Course Standards can be found at

Learning Resources/Textbook: McDougal Littell Georgia High School Mathematics 2

Cost: $71.25

With the emergence of technology as a tool for learning, South Forsyth High School will be utilizing various resources to assist with instruction, including ANGEL, online textbooks, and interactive websites.  In addition to these web based instructional tools, this course will also have a classroom set of textbooks.  Should you feel that your child would benefit from having a textbook at home in addition to the classroom textbook, please contact your child’s teacher.

Availability for Extra Help: Help sessions are available upon request. There will be a separate handout sent home with all available help times for myself and other Math 2 teachers. In addition to these help sessions, SFHS offers several other opportunities for students to seek extra help if needed. These include Saturday Academy, Student Learning Center, etc. Please see me or your counselor for more information about these programs.

2 CLASSROOM EXPECTATIONS:

Since this is a high school classroom, I expect that all students will present themselves in a mature and respectful manner. Here are some specific expectations:

• Be in your seat and ready with all necessary materials when the bell rings.

• All work to be completed in pencil ONLY!

• No food or drink is allowed in the classroom.

• Passes to lockers, restroom, etc. will only be given in emergency situations. Students must use their agenda as a hall pass.

• Respect your self, other students, the teacher, and any other adult visitors to the classroom.

• Profanity will not be tolerated!

In cases of inappropriate behavior, this is the discipline procedure that I will follow.

1. Warning.

2. Before/After School Detention and phone call home.

** In cases of severe disrespect or inappropriate behavior, students will be referred to an administrator.

Individual Practice (Homework):

Individual Practice is extremely important to the success of the student in this class because it reinforces the daily lesson and prepares the student for upcoming material.

You will receive one grade from the individual practice problems in each chapter. That grade is based on accuracy.

Individual practice is assigned daily. On the day following an assignment you will have an opportunity to ask questions regarding the homework.

It is your responsibility to have your individual practice with you each day and make any needed corrections before coming to class. Correct answers can be found in the back of the book for book assignments or on ANGEL for other assignments.

Required Assignments: Investigations (Real-life Applications), Formative and Summative Assessments

Makeup Work: All missed work and assessments are the responsibility of the student when they are absent from school. A student who is absent on the class day before a regularly scheduled assessment will be responsible for completing the assignment on the regularly scheduled day and time. Students who have been absent more than two consecutive days (including the assessment day) will be given five (5) school days to make up the assessment and/or other assignments. This does not include major projects, research papers, etc., where the deadline has been posted in advance. The teacher has the discretion to grant a longer period of time to make up work if there are extenuating circumstances.

Grading Calculations:

Course Average = 42.5% (1st Sem. Course Work) + 42.5% (2nd Sem. Course Work) + 15% EOCT

1st & 2nd Semester Course Work = 60% Summative + 40% Formative

Concept of formative assessment:

Grading Policy:

A = 90 – 100

B = 80 – 89

C = 70 – 79

Failing = Below 70

*Formative Assessments include, but are not limited to homework, class work, practice tests, and sections of projects/presentations.

*Summative Assessments include, but are not limited to unit tests, projects/presentations.

Supplies:

Binder or designated section in binder

Loose Leaf Paper

Graph Paper Pencils (Many!)

Dry Erase Markers

Scientific Calculator (TI-30 Multiview)

Graphing Calculator (TI 84 or TI-Nspire)

Mathematics II

2010-2011

My expectations are high, but together we can achieve our goals.

Be here, be positive, be willing to work, and you will succeed!

The teacher has the right to change or adjust anything on the syllabus as he sees fit due to individual circumstances.

Mathematics II Syllabus

Please sign the following and have a parent or guardian sign it as well before returning it to Mr.Kieninger by Tuesday, August 10, 2010.

*” I have received and read a copy of the syllabus during the first week of enrollment in this class. I understand what the expectations and responsibilities are of the student. In addition, it is clear that the above supply list is mandatory for all students. Should assistance be needed in obtaining any of these supplies, I will contact Mr.Kieninger. Otherwise, it is assumed that each student will come to class daily with all of the supplies listed. Materials will not be loaned to students; they MUST bring their own to class.”

**”I am also aware that failure to complete Individual Practice assignments may result in my/my student’s poor performance and possible lack of success in this class and further study in mathematics. ”

***”I understand the replacement cost of the Mathematics 2 book is $71.25.”
