The Water Cycle

The water cycle is the path that water takes as it circulates around the Earth. It is the journey water takes as it evaporates from the surface of the earth, rises into the atmosphere, cools and condenses into rain or snow in clouds, and falls again to the surface as precipitation. The water falling on land collects in rivers and lakes, soil, and porous layers of rock, and much of it flows back into the oceans, where the cycle starts over.

Four Main Steps

The water cycle is very complicated and dynamic. However, I am going to break it down into 4 main steps, evaporation, condensation, precipitation, and surface runoff.

Evaporation

Evaporation is the process by which water changes from a liquid to a gas or what is called water vapor. It is the main way that water moves from the liquid back into the water cycle as atmospheric water vapor. The water in the ocean evaporates because the heat from the sun warms the water and turns it into a gas. The water vapor rises up into the air and is moved around by the air currents in the atmosphere.

1. What is evaporation?

Answer:

2. What causes the water in the ocean to evaporate?

Answer:

3. What happens to the water vapor after it rises into the air?

Answer:

Condensation

As the water vapor rises into the air it begins to cool. When it cools enough it will condense back into liquid water. When it does this, it is called condensation. Condensation is when water vapor in the air cools and turns from a gas back into a liquid. This condensed water in the air is what we call a cloud.

1. What is condensation?

Answer:

2. What do we call condensed water that is floating through the air?

Answer:

Precipitation

When the clouds are pushed through the atmosphere by air currents, they will eventually cool enough for the water to fall out of the sky. When the condensed water falls back to the surface of the Earth, we call it precipitation. Precipitation is what we call rain or snow. When the water hits the ground, it runs into the lakes, streams, and rivers and becomes surface water or seeps into the ground and becomes ground water.

Surface Runoff

Surface runoff is the water that is flowing in streams, rivers and lakes back to the ocean. Gravity pulls the water down until it reaches the ocean, but some of this water evaporates back into the air before it reaches it.
