Practice Test #5 (Chapter 5)

*Note – I will leave more room for you to show your work on the actual test. If you would rather do your work on a separate piece of paper, then please remember to write the number of the problem you are working on next to your work. Also, this practice test may contain more problems than you will see on the actual test! (Remember that you will be able to use one of the classroom calculators on the actual test!)

PART 1: Express each ratio or rate in fraction form and simplify if possible. (You may use a calculator, but be sure to show me what you typed into your calculator.)

1) 15 to 40

2) 3:4

3) 1 ½ to 2 ¾

4) [pic]

5) 6.6 to 2.4

6) 7 : 1.4

7) 7 calculators for 28 students

8) 6 books for 2 students

PART 2: Express each of the following as a rate in fraction form (do not simplify) and as a unit rate. Remember to label your answers with the appropriate units! (You may use a calculator, but be sure to show me what you typed into your calculator.)

1) 7 pounds of turkey for 14 servings

Rate (in fraction form): Unit Rate:

2) 500 miles in 8 hours

Rate (in fraction form): Unit Rate:

3) 5 inches of snow in 4 hours

Rate (in fraction form): Unit Rate:

4) 5 candy bars for 2 people

Rate (in fraction form): Unit Rate:

PART 3: Express each of the following as a rate in fraction form (do not simplify) and as a unit price. Remember to label your answers with the appropriate units! If necessary, round your answers to the nearest thousandth. (You may use a calculator, but be sure to show me what you typed into your calculator.)

1) $2.99 for one 64 oz. bottle of soda

Rate (in fraction form): Unit Price:

2) $1.99 for one 48 oz. bottle of soda

Rate (in fraction form): Unit Price:

3) Assuming that we are comparing different sizes of the same brand, which size is the better buy (#1 or #2)? _______________________

PART 4: For each of the following, be sure to show the proportion that you are using to solve your problem, as well as the work necessary to solve the proportion. If necessary, round your answers to the nearest thousandth. (You may use a calculator, but be sure to show me what you typed into your calculator.)

1) A government agency bought 10 new desk chairs at $109.98 each. How much was spent altogether?

2) On an architect’s blueprint, 1 inch corresponds to 8.5 feet. If an exterior wall is 20 feet long, how long should the blueprint measurement be?

3) A 1-lb, 4-oz package of white fish costs $4.59. Find the unit price in cents per ounce. Round your answer to the nearest cent.

4) The standard dose of medicine for an adult is 3 grams for every 20 pounds of body weight. Use a proportion to find the standard dose for an adult that weighs 165 pounds.

5) There are 90 calories in a 8-ounce serving of juice. Use a proportion to find how many calories are in 12 ounces of this juice.

PART 5: Solve the following proportions for n. Be sure to show the work necessary to solve the proportion. If should not be necessary to round any of your answers. (You may use a calculator, but be sure to show me what you typed into your calculator.)
