WHAT SHOULD I LOOK FOR IN MS. JOHNSON’S CLASSROOM?
My classroom will provide practical experience in mathematical skills that are a bridge to the real world of jobs and adult responsibilities. This goes beyond memorization into a world of reasoning and problem solving.

• Foldables: provide three-dimensional personalized graphic organizers.

• Vocabulary: emphasis builds verbal skills as well as computational skills

DESCRIPTION:
The sixth-grade mathematical curriculum is designed to maximize student learning through the use of manipulatives, cooperative learning, investigations, and technology. The curriculum assists students as they begin the transition of mathematical thought processes, from the concrete to the abstract.
AMSTI:
Huffman Middle is an Alabama Math, Science, & Technology Initiative (AMSTI) School. We focus on The Five E’s Instructional Model:
• Engage
• Explore
• Explain
• Extend
• Evaluate
REQUIREMENTS:
Students are expected to complete and turn in all group assignments, individual assignments, quizzes, vocabulary, homework, classwork and notebook and keep good notes. Students are expected to give more than a 100% in my class EVERYDAY.
FIRST SEMESTER OBJECTIVES:
In Grade 6, instructional time should focus on four critical areas. These areas are (1) connecting
ratio and rate to whole number multiplication and division and using concepts of ratio and rate to
solve problems; (2) completing understanding of division of fractions and extending the notion
of number to the system of rational numbers, which includes negative numbers; (3) writing,
interpreting, and using expressions and equations; and (4) developing understanding of statistical
thinking.
Students should bring the following items to class EVERYDAY:

➢ Red Plastic pocket folders with prongs (keep graded work in)

CLASSROOM EXPECTATIONS:
1. Respect the principal, teachers and staff.
2. Respect yourself, classmates, and classroom environment.
3. Strive for academic excellence.
4. Do not disrupt the learning of others.
5. Be prepared for class: bring materials and be ready to learn.
6. Be fair, honest, and trustworthy at all times.
**These rules were pulled from the Birmingham City Schools Code of Conduct.**
HALLWAY EXPECTATIONS:
1. Keep all noise and talking to a minimum (use your indoor voices).
2. No horseplay, running, or touching at any time.
3. Do not waste time at the lockers.
4. Do not go to the restroom without permission.
5. Do not roam the halls.
TEAM CONSEQUENCES:
1st Offense- Write up and Verbal warning
2nd Offense- Write up and a call home to the parent(s)
3rd Offense- Write up and PE/After school detention (depends on the types of offenses and after school detention will include a call home to the parent)
4th Offense- Write up and Team Intervention and/or Parent conference
5th Offense- Write up and Office referral with documentation
NOTE: ALL SEVERE AND/OR REPETITIVE VIOLATIONS OF THE STUDENT CODE OF CONDUCT AND/OR TEAM RULES WILL BE IMMEDIATELY FORWARDED TO AN ADMINISTRATOR.
BATHROOM PRIVILEGES:
GO BEFORE OR AFTER CLASS!!! Students will have designated times where they are allowed to go to the bathroom; they will be encouraged to take advantage of them. Emergency situations will be up to the discretion of the teacher. Students will be expected to sign a log-in/log-out sheet if they are given permission to leave the classroom.
EVALUATION:
Students will be evaluated in the following areas: class work (individual and cooperative learning groups), homework, quizzes, tests, and projects. Students will be tested throughout the nine weeks on objectives done through the week and previous weeks. Tests may be verbal or written. Students will be given a practice test that resembles the actual test 3 to 4 days before the real test. Students will be able to use the practice test as a study guide to review objectives that they missed to prepare for the actual test.
2nd CHANCE (RETEST): Students that make below a 70 on chapter test will be able to retake the test minus 20 points to improve their grades. This means when the student takes the test the 2nd time the highest they can receive will be an “80”, which is a letter grade of “B”.
HOMEWORK:
Homework is given to reinforce what we have learned in class. Homework is counted as a part of your grade. Students are asked to get three telephone numbers of classmates. If student is absent it is his/her responsibility to call a classmate to get the assignment. Homework assignments will be listed on the school website once it is up and running.
LATE POLICY:
• All teachers will have a “While You Were Out” folder and designated area where students can go to retrieve any work that was missed.
• Students have two days to hand in make-up work upon their return to school. There will be a designated tray for students to turn in their make-up work.
• Students will be given three days to make-up a test.
• Regarding classroom projects, the deadlines for projects will be included in the project instructions and rubrics. Acceptance of late projects will be handled on a case-by-case basis
PROGRESS REPORTS:
Progress Reports will be sent home to inform parents where their child is standing at the mid-point of the nine weeks. Here at Huffman Middle comprehensive progress reports go home every two weeks. Please review to see your child progress in each of his/her class. Also, review to see any missing assignments that need to be made up. Please do no hesitate to make an appointment to discuss ways we can improve your child's learning ability if your child is making a failing grade.
Dates to expect mid-point progress reports are: September 20, 2013, November 22, 2013, February 13, 2014, & April 29, 2014
REPORT CARDS:
Parents can expect report cards on: November 1, 2013, January 7, 2014, March 31, 2014, & May 29, 2014
PARENT CONFERENCES:
Parent conferences are held on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Fridays. Please contact the office at 205-231-5370 to schedule a conference. You MUST make an appointment for a conference. If you are unable to make your scheduled conference please call to cancel and reschedule.

SPECIAL PROJECTS:
Students will have special projects throughout the nine weeks. These instructions will be sent home to parents to work with your child.
STI:
This is a program where parents can go on- line daily to see their child’s grades for each class. Please view at least 3 times a week. If further information is needed, please feel free to contact the school office.
TUTORING:
It is our desire for each child to learn, but sometimes students have not mastered the basic skills they need to do higher math and may need extra help when the classroom is not enough. Please have a talk with your child to find out if they need the extra help. I will offer tutoring when needed.
AFTER SCHOOL DETENTION:
One disciplinary action that is available to us as a consequence for inappropriate conduct is after school detention. As a result of your child’s actions, he/she will be given after school detention. The behavior can include, but is not limited to excessive talking in class, defiant behavior, rude/disrespectful behavior, and continuous disruptive behavior. Parents will receive a phone call and a letter will be sent home to inform you that your child has been placed in after school detention.
LOW ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE:
In attempt to aid your child in improving his/her grade, we are offering an opportunity to improve his/her grade by remaining after school in order to complete missed assignments or retake tests and/or quizzes. Parents will receive a phone call and a letter will be sent home to inform you that your child has been placed in after school detention.
