Relegation – it’s going to be tight

THE scrap to avoid relegation from the ECB Premier League looks like going to the wire, Saturday’s rain-free programme - which produced all 18 definite results - creates a tight situation at the bottom with only three points separating eighth-placed Bramhall from Macclesfield, in 11th.

Only Urmston, now 33 points adrift at the foot, look in real trouble. They were thrashed by 184 runs on the ground of leaders Alderley Edge, who maintained a 44 points advantage after rattling up 277-9, Khalid Sawas 64, Adam Worrall 60. Lancashire’s leg-spinning discovery Matthew Parkinson took 4-88 including the wicket of his Red Rose colleague Jordan Clark for 51. In reply, Urmston mustered just 93, Clark 5-41.

Down Below, Neston recorded their second successive victory, by 32 runs at Nantwich, where they were second best until late in the game. Neston mustered 178, David Hurst 70, Ollie Griffiths 4-46 and Nantwich were coasting in response at 131-4. That is when medium pacer Matt Stewart stepped in, dismissed host skipper Ray Doyle for a sound 61 and went on to help bowl the Dabbers out for 146, with a smart 4-28. He was aided by Simon Mugava, 3-56.

Skipper Nick Cantello was the star of Bramhall’s three wicket win against Toft with an unbeaten 110 to carry his side’s reply to 211-7. Toft had totalled 208-8 pre-tea, Morgan Clark 93, Ifti Naseer 3-72.

Missing from this game were Lancashire starlets Rob Jones and Danny Lamb, both on Test match duty with England at Old Trafford.

Macclesfield were comfortably beaten at Chester Boughton Hall despite posting 230-6, Ollie Marsden 78, Nick Bertus 56, Ash Davis 4-55. With a typically classy 116, Warren Goodwin led Chester’s charge to 231-2 after tea, helped by Rick Moore’s 55.

Bowdon did admirably to win by 35 runs at Hyde after posting 251-8, Pat Ashling 67, Danny Williams 51, Dan Cranmer 4-76. Despite the ever-consistent James Duffy’s 83, Hyde were bowled out for 216 by Chris Ashling, 4-65 and Matt Tully, 3-50.

Cheadle moved into mid-table with a five wickets home win over Timperley, Greg Dixon spending the whole game on the pitch. After fielding in Timpers’ 207, he hit an unbeaten 115 after tea when Cheadle coasted to 208-5.

Rare win for Cheadle Hulme

CHEADLE HULME recorded their second win, by three wickets, chasing Warrington’s 171-8 at Walton Lea, Alex Read 5-44, Sulman Malik 57. But the Grove Park men stay 11th, 39 points above wooden spoonists Tattenhall, who were again bowled out cheaply, this time for 95 by Weaverham (Kevin Waterhouse 4-25, Rob McMillan 4-28) who went on to win by five wickets.

Didsbury made it 10 wins to dent Sale’s promotion hopes. Sale were bowed out for 142 and Didsbury responded with 143-2, Mike Marfani 69 not out, Simon Normanton 60 not out (and 3-44).

Grappenhall stay second after a tight, two wickets win at Marple chasing 194-5 (Jim Morgan 76, Paul Wood 68). Teenager Albert Pennington, 57 and Gaz Burns, 55 knocked off the runs after recovering from 55-5.

Oulton Park lie third after a one wicket home win against neighbours Davenham who scored 189-8, Givon Christian 79, Matthew Parkinson 4-83. Danny Leech 55 and Martin East 54 helped knock the runs off.

Bollington won by six wickets at home to out-of-form Oxton, whom they dismissed for 144, Gayan Fernando 57, Jack Dickinson 4-28. Skipper Rick Hough top scored with 66 in Bolly’s response

Record 9-17 for Dufty

NORTHWICH’s Andrew Dufty produced a remarkable bowling performance at Stockport, taking 9-14 from 15 overs in a total of 104. These were the best-ever figures by a Northwich 1st XI bowler and fifth best in all-time League records. Earlier Northwich had scored 212-9, Sam Stoneley 59. Widnes’ ninth win was at the expense of Congleton, bowling out their visitors for 64 (Ben Scowen 41 not out), Ben Hewitt 5-10. Second placed Upton beat Christleton by nine wickets while Alvanley moved up to third with a five wickets home victory over Middlewich, In the return game between the New Boys Barrow beat Lindow by nine wickets, Bart Ryan-Beswick taking 6-35 and Iro De Silva 3-20 and 54 not out.

Mobberley moved up-table with a 45 runs home win over Brooklands, Nathan Wood 68, Abdul Aqeel 4-14.

Bramhall at Menai Bridge in National t20 Area Finals

MENAI BRIDGE have won the North Wales Premier League T20 and will stage the NatWest ECB National t20 Area Finals on Sunday, August 7.

This means that County League T20 winners Bramhall will line up with the hosts and the winners of the domestic T20 competitions run by the Birmingham & District League and the North Staffs & South Cheshire League, both due to be staged on Sunday, July 24

New date for Chester National Club quarter-final

CHESTER Boughton Hall visit North-East Premier League title-challengers South Northumberland in the quarter-final of the Royal London National Club knock out on the re-arranged date of Sunday, August 7 (1 p.m.). Full draw: High Wycome v Swardestone

If Chester win, they will be home to Bamford Fieldhouse or Ormskirk in the semi-final on Sunday, August 28.

Early Over 40s qualifiers

TOFT and Grappenhall have qualified for Over Forties Central Division quarter-finals to be played next month. They beat Timperley and Ashley respectively on Wednesday last week when all games were played for the first time this season.

Trophy holders Neston are through in the West zone, with Chester Blazers likely to join them.

In the South-East Division Alderley Edge Wizards, Bollington Veterans and Bredbury Saints are all in the mix.

Still the only unbeaten team, Cheadle Hulme lead the way in the North-East division with Sale Silverbacks and Urmston Tigers still in the running,.

League fixtures continue on Wednesdays, July 27 and August 3, followed by the quarter-finals on Wednesday,August 10 or by the following Sunday, August 14 at the latest.

Finals Day for the four divisional winners is at Warrington on August Bank Holiday from 12 noon.

Jack Williams stars in Cheshire win

CHESHIRE beat Devon by a comfortable eight wickets margin on the third afternoon of their Unicorns county championship match at Alderley Edge from Sunday to Tuesday last week.

The first day was seriously curtailed with no play until late-afternoon due to the unfitness of the ground after long periods of rain. Devon were then skittled for 113, principally by Bowdon debutant Matt Tully, who took 4-34, and Will Owen 3-37.

Cheshire were in trouble at 71-5 before three fine innings enabled them to post a total of 289 and a lead of 176. The batsmen who did so well were Danny Lamb, 66, Will Owen, 60 and Jack Williams, 54.

Batting again on the second afternoon Devon reached 150-5 and were finally dismissed on the last day for 289, Chester all-rounder Williams earning himself man of the match honours with 5-75 from a 22-overs stint, backed by Dan Woods 3-86. Needing 123 to win, Cheshire strolled home at 123-2 from 25 overs, Rob Jones 38 not out, Harry Dearden 35.

John Birchall gives Performance of Month

MACCLESFIELD all-rounder John Birchall has won the Joseph Holt Brewery-sponsored Performance of the Month award for June for his magnificent effort in scoring 110 and taking 6-51 in an ECB Premier League game against Neston on June 18.

DAVENHAM PLAYERS INJURED

TWO Davenham players suffered injury in their narrow derby defeat at Oulton Park on Saturday, Calum Begg having to leave the field when he damaged a foot, a recurrence of an old soccer problem which had already sidelined him for two months.

Later, Davenham skipper Dan Hancock suffered a painfully dislocated shoulder while going for a catch. It was an hour before an ambulance and paramedic arrived at Pinfold Lane to take him to Leighton Hospital where his shoulder was put back in place by medics. Club chairman Bob Floyd accompanied Dan to hospital and stayed with him, getting home at 1 a.m.

Bob Floyd told Newsletter he was extremely grateful for the kind assistance offered by the host club and especially secretary Su Ramsbottom, whom he has since thanked personally. Generous Bob also remarked that the exciting game, which Park won by one wicket, had been played in a great spirit.

Josh Northover of Mobberley was taken to hospital after splitting the webbing in his hand for the second time this season while making a catch at Christleton on Saturday, July 16 and was unable to bat. Josh bravely returned to play for his club on Saturday.

Also on July 16, Urmston fielder Callum Turner was found to have ruptured his spleen in a freak accident while fielding against Nantwich at the UCG. He has since has undergone an operation in hospital.

NATIONAL U15 FINALS AT NESTON

THE National Under 15 North West Area Regional Finals are to be staged on the two fine pitches at Neston on Monday, August 1 starting at 10.30 a.m.

In the Cheshire final played at Grappenhall on Monday last week, Alderley Edge beat Neston by 10 runs. Scores: Alderley Edge 100-9 (Ash 33, Brown 3-27); Neston 90 (Kumar 3-18, Battersby 4 stumpings).

Alderley were due to meet Lancashire champions Euxton on Sunday in a bid to qualify for the Neston tournament.

Leaders beat Cheshire Fifties

CHESHIRE lost by five wickets to National Over 50s championship leaders Durham on Wednesday last week. Scores: Cheshire 167 (Phil Catterall 36, Dave Smith 27 not out); Durham 168-5 (Bhauka Shuka 3-34, Mel Dobson 2-29.

Next game is against Lancashire at Formby on Wednesday this week (1.30 p.m.).

Sixties lose, too

CHESHIRE lost by 37 runs to Lancashire at Accrington on Tuesday last week in the National 60 Plus county championship. Scores: Lancashire 176-5 (Phil Noble 9-1-19-1); Cheshire 139 (John Edwards 38, Phil Noble 32 not out, Colin Norbury 24).

Cheshire visit Yorkshire on Tuesday this week.
