Math 1

Welcome to the start of a new school year at Glenn. The following is a list of materials needed for Math 1 and my expectations for each student. Please read them, share them with your parents, and return the signature sheet to me the next time you return to this class.

MATERIALS NEEDED DAILY: Optional Donations:

1. 2 pencils · box of tissue

2. completed assignment · colored paper

3. loose-leaf 3 ring binder notebook (1½ - 2inches) · 4 by 6 white index cards

4. loose-leaf paper · box of colored pencils

5. TI-83 Plus calculator or TI-84 plus calculator *

6. Composition book

These materials should accompany you to class EACH AND EVERY DAY.

*CALCULATORS:

The TI-83/83+/84 plus is the calculator that we will be using this year. It is an integral part of the Math 1 curriculum. In order for your child to be comfortable and efficient with the calculator, I strongly suggest that he/she purchase one for use at home and at school. (If you do not wish to purchase one, you may check one out from the media center for a $10 fee. An agreement form is required as well.) The NC EOC (end of course) test in Math 1 assumes that all students are proficient with this technology. Though the calculators are expensive, students will be able to use them during their entire high school and college careers. If you do decide to purchase a calculator please bring and turn in the UPC bar code. By collecting these bar codes the school is able to receive free equipment. Calculators may be found at any of the following locations.

Staples Target Wal-Mart

K-mart Best Buy Costco

CLASSROOM RULES:

1. Students should be in class, with required materials, ready for class to begin when the bell

rings.

2. Students should have nightly homework and should complete assignments on time.

3. Students should take care or personal needs (locker, water, and bathroom) before school,

between classes, at lunch or after school. You will not be allowed to leave class during

class time.

4. Attendance has a major impact on success in an algebra class. Students should strive to

be in class everyday; however, if an absence is necessary, it is the student’s responsibility

to determine what has been missed and to turn it in within 3 days of returning to school.

If you are absent on a test day, you are responsible for making up the test within one

week. Missing test will need to be made up before school, lunch time or after school, not

during class time. Otherwise, you will receive a ZERO.

5. NO food or drink (not even water) are permitted in the classroom. (THIS IS SCHOOL

POLICY.)

6. Cell phones should be kept out of sight in class unless you are asked to use them!

GRADING POLICIES:

• Homework/Classwork 30%

• Mini-quizzes/Quizzes 30%

• Tests 40%

GRADE SCALE

A 90-100

B 80-89

C 70-79

D 60-69

F 59-0

Class time and your Notebook:

At the beginning of class there will be a “bell ringer” or warm-up on the board or tv. You should begin solving the warm-up questions in your notebook as soon as the bell rings. At times these problems will be collected and counted as a grade. Similarly, practice problems or worksheets given after notes may also be collected and counted as a grade. It is important that you keep an organized notebook for this class!!

HOMEWORK/CLASSWORK:

Homework is given every day! You are expected to complete all homework. Your homework grade for each unit is based on the number of questions that you complete. If I assign 60 problems in a unit & you only complete 45, then you would have a homework grade for the unit of 75% (45 ( 60 = 0.75). As long as you give a true attempt at every question assigned, then you should have a 100 for your homework grade for every unit that we do in Math 1. These homework grades are entered at the end of each unit!

Classwork grades come in a variety of forms. At times, I will give warm ups at the beginning of the period or practice problems to be worked on in class after we have completed notes. You may also be given an activity to complete for a classwork grade. You will also receive a classwork participation grade every unit (3 units per nine weeks for a total of 3 extra grades) based on the criteria below:

• 50 points for attendance: (If you are not in class you can’t participate!!)

o -5 points for each absence

o -5 points for each tardy

• 30 points for warm ups, classwork, homework, etc.

o -5 points for not attempting to complete warm up or classwork

o -5 points for not taking notes

o -5 points for falling asleep

• 20 managing cell phones

o -5 points if phone is out during class

MINI QUIZZES/QUIZZES:

Mini quizzes are short 5 question quizzes that will be given at the beginning of a class period. These are unannounced quizzes where students can use their own notes to complete. Mini quizzes should be your work only, you should not get help from another student nor the teacher! These grades should be good as long at you pay attention in class and take good notes. Other quizzes are announced and will be closed note quizzes.

TESTS:

A test is your opportunity to show you have mastered each objective in the unit. In order to master each objective, it is imperative that you practice the skills by completing your daily class work/homework assignments. Students are encouraged to come in for tutoring on skills that they have not mastered before the unit test. This is to ensure you SUCCESS IN MATH. In addition, I will also use a unit test to improve quiz scores. If you can make an 80 or better on the unit test, then I will go back and change any quiz in that unit to an 80 if it was originally below an 80.

ATTENDANCE:

Attendance is crucial in every subject but is vital in math. Students should make every effort to be present for class EVERY day. When you are absent, please make sure that you show your homework to Mrs. Griffith in order to receive credit. It is YOUR responsibility to get your make up work. Check the assignment sheet for the homework and the assignment board for missed worksheets. You should see Mrs. Griffith or a reliable student for notes that you missed.

If you know in advance you will be absent for several days, make arrangements to meet with me

in order to keep from getting behind. We will go over any lessons that you will miss and you can get any worksheets that we will be doing in your absence.

** The Common Core Essential Standards for Math 1 is adhered to closely.**

A special Note for Students and Parents/Guardians:

The skills in math are very sequential. It is imperative that students have a mastery of general objectives to proceed to subsequent topics. I believe that all students can learn math if they are willing to put forth an honest effort. I will do everything I can to help your child be successful. Your help is needed in three areas: attendance, homework, and parental support.

1. Attendance is crucial in every subject, but it is vital to the learning process in math. I urge you as

parents to do everything you can do to assure your child is in math class everyday.

2. Homework is a requirement for this course, not an option. Students cannot be successful without practice. Expect your child to spend 15 to 30 minutes on math each night.

3. Tutoring is available. Please listen to your teacher for available day(s) and times.
