Certificate Program

Mission Statement

St. John Baptist Church School of Discipleship exists to equip members of the congregation to become more serious, able and faithful disciples of the Lord Jesus Christ by offering a comprehensive Biblical disciple’s curriculum.

“Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.”

II Tim 2:15.

Registration is now taking place for Fall I session. Please check the church bulletin for this information. Also, one can obtain a copy of the registration form from the church’s website. (.)

To complete the certificate program one must attend eight courses. The courses are offered either one night a week or Saturday for six weeks. The time interval for each course is 1-½ hours.

Please pick-up a copy of the school’s brochure for a full listing of the course descriptions and the requirements for the program. Courses 115, 116, 117, 118, 119, 163, 193 and 200 will count as electives. Courses 217, 218 and 219 will count as core.

A core of courses are topics that will present the basic foundation for Christian Believers supplemented by courses that address more specialized areas of ministry and interest. Six core and two elective courses must be fulfilled in order to graduate.

Courses listed with an (*) represents existing Disciple Ministries of St. John Baptist Church that will be included in this program. An equivalency of one course will be credited towards the completion of the program. The Disciple Ministries will only count as an elective. This will be based on an annual class attendance of 50 %. A registration form is required for all courses. While no application fee is required, each participant is expected to pay for materials and books.

The following courses will be offered for the Fall I session:

Course Descriptions

*COURSE 115 – Women’s Fellowship Ministry

Instructors – Sister Barbara Primas

Our foundational scripture is Titus 2: 3-5. The entire ministry is teaching and preparing women to be women pleasing in the sight of God at all times.

This course will teach women to love and respect each other at all times as well as being pleasing in the sight of God.

*COURSE 116 – The Brotherhood

Instructors – Deacon Abayomi

The course will provide an awareness of strongholds in the African American Family and developing strategies to break these strongholds through Spiritual warfare. Also, this course will cover building and further developing a stronger relationship with God and with each other.

Course Content:

The ministry allows Christian men to share experiences with one another. In addition, it allows them to share and build a fellowship with one another. Also, this ministry helps develop strong disciples and spiritual warriors.

*COURSE 117 – Adult Sunday School

Instructor – Deacon Joe Robinson/Deacon Frank Carter

Course Content:

Our classes are geared to spiritually prepare and challenge students to glorify God by living holy, and thereby setting an example for spreading the gospel. Students will also see principles that they can apply to their own life situation.

*COURSE 118 – Men’s Bible Study

Instructor – Deacon Roman Rivers

The Men’s Bible Study is a Christ Discipleship Program that seeks to move men to a deeper relationship with Christ through discipleship. The study stresses “Hearing the voice of God and seeing the work of God throughout the word of God.” “…my sheep hear my voice and I know them and they follow me….” John 10:27

1. The study stresses the man’s responsibility in the home and community at large, by providing a link that translates off the pages of scripture, and into his day to day living.

2. Some of the ongoing themes include:

God’s Word is eternal; therefore, it does not lose any of its power to effect change through the passage of time, or cultures. (See Isaiah 55:11)

The Word of God is the voice of God.

Humility – The indispensable ingredient to receiving the fullness of grace (favor) God has for you.

Christ – A man’s return from being self-centered (In Adam) to God centered (In Christ).

4 Issues that we cover within the context of study are such tentacles of sin as: Pride, other gods, (Belief systems), drugs & alcohol (Dealer & User) Homosexuality, abortion, and other challenges to the believer’s spiritual growth.

*COURSE 119 – The Potter’s House Ministry

Instructor – Evangelist Jackie Bailey Moore

In keeping with Pastor’s vision for the Church, The Potter’s House Ministry focuses on keeping our eyes fixed on Jesus in order that He might bring restoration to the wounded by restoring their hope, healing their damaged emotions, healing hurting and broken hearts. Ultimately, delivering them from bondage, to be set free and made whole.

COURSE 193 – Fire Proof Your Marriage

Instructor – Deacon Russell and Joni Waller

This course will cover the inner workings of how to build a strong Christ-Centered, Bible-Based marriage in order to live the full wholesome life God intended marriage to be. The course has been designed to teach the student the following:

1. Recognize and appreciate the God-designed differences between men and women, as well as their roles in marriage. It will also address reflective listening.

2. Learn the importance of experiencing God’s love and reflecting His love to others.

3. Develop a full understanding of marriage as a lifelong covenant.

4. Confront and address any sin or temptation that might be threatening to the marriage.

5. Encourage each student to develop and seek forgiveness for any wrong through God love and grace.

6. Explore how God defines love, to begin to teach loving unconditionally and selflessly as they reflect on God’s love for them.

COURSE 200 – New Members Bible Study

Instructor – MIT Melvin Cade

This course is designed to teach students the basic baptist doctrine. The course will include a review of the doctrine of salvation, sanctification, stewardship and eternal security

COURSE 217C- Prison Epistles (Letter from Paul) Instructor –Bro. Joe Carpenter

This course consists of an overview of letters written by Apostle Paul while Paul was a prisoner in Rome. Three letters were written to churches: Ephesians, Philippians and Colossians. The forth letter was written to an individual, Philemon.

Part I of the course will cover the following:

The study of Ephesians will include God’s eternal purpose to establish and complete His body, the church of Christ.

The study of Philemon is the intercession of Paul on behalf of a run-a-way slave to his master, who is now a fellow believer in Christ.

COURSE 218C-A Study of the Book of Revelation Part I- Instructor Rev. Dr. Silas M. Townsend

The book of Revelation is one of the most intriguing books of the Bible. It’s also one of the most mysterious. Filled with vivid imagery, rich themes, and deep spiritual insights, it can be challenging to read and understand. Yet woven throughout Revelations sweeping tapestry is a unifying message: The victory found in Jesus Christ. This course takes an in-depth, yet practical, look at the book of Revelation, and shares how we can experience a victorious life today.

COURSE 219C -Joseph-Overcoming Life’s Challenges-Instructor Evan. Frances Echevarria

Students will learn how to believe and trust God’s word coming from the old testament

character on the life of Joseph, who endured a hard and painful, tear filled experience in his life. Joseph learned through extreme difficult circumstances how to overcome by believing God and by keeping the hope of glory alive. Students will discover their own God given potential as they experience the fullness of Christ manifesting in their own lives.
