Kwatasian P. Hunt Employee Assistance Program Coordinator

State Employee Assistance Program

In March 1992, Governor Guy Hunt signed and issued Executive Order No. 48 authorizing the development and implementation of the State of Alabama Employee Assistance Program (EAP). The Department of Finance was the designated agency that would be responsible and oversee this new directive. The EAP was officially launched October 1, 1994. State agencies were encouraged to enroll their agency in this program and in doing so, their employees had access to services offered through EAP.

The state's EAP offers short-term counseling to self-referred and supervisory referred employees. This service is provided to address workrelated issues that impedes an employee's ability to effectively perform his/her job function. In addition, employees and their dependent family members accessing EAP services are provided with professional, confidential assistance with personal issues that impact their family life.

EAP services are managed by Behavioral Health Systems, Inc. (BHS). Headquartered in Birmingham, Alabama, BHS has a network of master's level mental health professionals, psychologist, and psychiatrist available to assist with problems such as:

? Supervisor and subordinate conflict ? Alcohol and other drug abuse ? Marital and family issues ? Stress ? Grief

Expected outcomes of great value to the State include:

? Increased retention ? Reduced absenteeism ? Improved productivity ? Fewer job injuries ? Reduced conflicts involving EEO, harassment, ADA issues, etc. ? Happier employees
