Purpose

Train lay responders to overcome any reluctance to act in emergency situations and to recognize and care for life-threatening respiratory or cardiac emergencies in adults and children. Provide the lay responder with the knowledge and skills necessary in an emergency to help sustain life and to minimize pain and the consequences of injury or sudden illness until professional medical help arrives.

Learning Objectives

1. • Describe how to recognize and respond to an emergency.

2. • Describe the purpose of the Good Samaritan Laws.

3. • Describe the difference between consent and implied consent.

4. • Describe the three emergency action steps.

5. • Identify when and how to call 9-1-1 or the local emergency number.

6. • Identify how to minimize the risk of disease transmission when giving care.

7. • Demonstrate how to minimize the risk of disease transmission when giving care.

8. • Demonstrate how to check an unconscious and conscious person for life-threatening and

nonlife-threatening conditions.

9. • Identify the signals of shock and describe how to minimize its effects.

10. • Describe how to prioritize care for injuries and sudden illnesses.

11. • Identify the signals of various soft tissue and musculoskeletal injuries.

12. • Identify the signs and symptoms of sudden illness, including stroke, diabetic emergency,

13. poisoning and allergic reactions, and how to care for them.

14. • Identify the signs and symptoms of heat- and cold-related emergencies and describe how to

New Jersey Alcohol and Drug Counselor Regulations

Featuring

Every Alcohol and Drug Counselor (LCADC and CADC) is required to take a 6 hour live training program concerning the NJ Alcohol and Drug Counselor Regulations within their first licensure cycle. It is recommended that it be taken after changes in the regulations. This presentation will include the 2009 changes in the regulations. Other mental health providers would also benefit from this training program if they will be supervising Alcohol and Drug Counselor Interns, or CADCs.

This program is approved for Continuing Education for LCADC, CADC, LPC, MFT. See details below.

A Collaborative Approach to

Symptom Identifications, Diagnosis and Treatment

Robert Alan King, MD

Professor of Child Psychiatry, Yale Child Study Center

Yale University School of Medicine

Dr. King is Professor of child Psychiatry at the Yale Child Study Center, Yale School of Medicine, where he is medical director of the Yale Tic Disorder/OCD Clinic. Dr. King studied medicine at Oxford and Harvard Medical Schools, and completed his pediatric, psychiatric, and child psychiatric training at Harvard. He was a clinical research associate and staff psychiatrist at the National Institute of Mental Health and for the last 18 years has taught and conducted research at Yale in the areas of Tourette’s disorder, OCD, PANDAS, adolescent suicide and pediatric consultation/liaison psychiatry. He has served as an investigator on numbers federal and TSA grants and is the author of numerous research papers in these areas, the co-author of a textbook of child psychiatry, and co-editor of Suicide in Children and Adolescents (Cambridge University Press, 2003)

The goal of this training is to provide information to behavioral health clinicians on the diagnosis and treatment of Tourette Syndrome and Associated Mental Health Disorders.

Governor Richard Codey has generously agreed to present the Richard Codey Behavioral Health Care Quality Improvement Trophy to the winning organization at the Fair. The trophy will be held by the winning organization for one year, then passed on to the next year’s winner.
