Dear Parents:

The following is a summary of information pertaining to First Communion which is scheduled for Sunday, April 28, 2019 at 8:30 am at St. Mary’s Parish. More detailed information will be sent home at appropriate times.

ORDERS: In past years, I have provided First Communion gift catalogs and placed a group order with the Carl B. Noelke Co. of La Crosse, a wholesaler of church goods and religious articles. They carry gift items for First Communicants. The company has discontinued their specialty catalogs. If you wish to order gift items from this company, you will have to order online, or call 1-800-433-9162. Veils and other accessories are available from the Noelke Co.

FIRST COMMUNION RETREAT: We are again hosting a retreat for the First Communicants from all three parishes, to be held Saturday, March 23, 2019 from 9 am until about noon at St. Mary’s Parish in the church basement. Parents are welcome but not required to attend.

FIRST RECONCILIATION: The second graders will receive the sacrament for the first time on March 23rd during the retreat, mentioned above. You are receiving a preparation sheet; please help your child to prepare for Reconciliation, and to memorize the Act of Contrition. We are also learning this prayer in class, but it is a difficult prayer for 2nd graders. They will need to know the Hail Mary and The Lord’s Prayer for their penance. If your child has not already learned these prayers, I have included another copy of our prayer packet. After First Reconciliation, the students will be instructed in the proper reception of the Eucharist.

BANNERS: In March, you will receive materials and information regarding construction of a banner. Banners will hang in the church during the First Communion Mass. Please use the suggestions which will be provided, or use your imagination. This is a sharing project between you and your child. Banners must be returned no later than Wednesday, April 24, 2019.

FIRST COMMUNION PRACTICE: On Wednesday, April 24th at 6:00 pm, we will practice in the church. At least one parent, and preferably both, must be present. If you are unable to attend, please have an adult stand in for you and fill you in on the procedure. Please report directly to the church. Do not go to the classroom first.

FIRST COMMUNION DAY: First Communicants and parents will need to be in church no later than 7:45 am for photos. The class photo will be taken when everyone is present. After the professional photos are taken, we will go down to the basement of the church for final instructions and reminders. At the beginning of Mass, you will walk up the main aisle behind Father and the servers, with your child between both parents. Please make sure your child remains quiet and is prepared for the sanctity of the Mass.

PICTURES: Jenelle Becker will be taking the professional First Communion portraits. Envelopes from which to order pictures will go home in March. I ask that picture envelopes be returned to me ahead of time, if possible, and I will give them back to the families on First Communion Sunday. I do this to ensure each student has a picture envelope. It is not uncommon for parents to forget this in the excitement of the day. This is not required of you, but would be a good idea. You are not required to order prints, but all of the students need to be present for the class photo.

PRESENTATION OF SCAPULARS: Scapulars will be blessed by Father Antony and presented to the second graders during the retreat on March 23rd. I will need your child’s scapular by April 24th. Some gift sets contain a scapular. I have extra scapulars for those families not able to provide one. The boys receive a scapular with brown shoulder ribbons; the girl’s scapular has white ribbons.

If you have any other questions, please feel free to call me at the Religious Education Center at 715-652-2196 or e-mail me at weber.sweber.sherrie@.

Thank you for your cooperation and assistance.

Mrs. Weber
