Wil Ranney and I have constructed some information for you to begin exploring livestream options. Some may think you need a fancy set up and lots of tech equipment. While using your smart phone is probably not a long term solution for this, it is certainly the quickest way to get your service online. Here are some suggestions we would like to pass along to you.Consider leading a service outside your church or in an altered space. If you are encouraging folks to stay away, lead by example.Facebook live is going to give your services the most viewership as it is the most widely used social media platform. It also creates a sense of virtual community as people can comment and “like” during the live stream which makes it interactive. If you do not have a Facebook account or do not have many folks that use social media, upload your recorded worship experience to YouTube and then email out the link to your constituency.Practice. Set up a time to do test your live stream before Sunday morning.Encourage your folks in your livestream/recorded services how they can continue to give and support the ministry of the church. Tell the story of how your church will be engaging your community. People give to things that make a difference, not a church budget.Consider using Zoom, Facebook video chat, or Google hangouts for small group gatherings and bible studies. All people need is a smart phone or a computer with a camera to participate. When you livestream or post videos to Facebook, broadcast copyright laws are applicable. We are licensed to publish anything in the hymnal as it is licensed to the UMC. Music beyond that is a copyright infringement without purchasing additional licensing through CCLI/CCVI. Many churches avoid these issues by just streaming the sermon. The sermon is the most desirable content people are seeking online. is offering free licensing through April 15th during this unusual time that will cover the majority of these issues. There are great online worship suggestions from the following sources of us are making ourselves available to assist your during this time. Contact either of us if we can help youMatt German: matt.german@Wil Ranney: wil@Matt’s 10 commandments for effective media/music ministryThou shall not use media in worship that does not support the theme of the day!Media should always be used to support your point, not entertain your congregationThou shall not substitute media for preachingVideos should be used to support preaching, not replace it. A video clip longer than 3 minutes robs you of valuable preaching timeThou shall always have a plan BUnlike Jesus, media sometimes will fail to work. Always have a backup planThou shall train, equip, and resource media volunteersDevelop a media team of gifted people. Media takes a lot of time and energy to put together. Creating media content is not likely the best use of the pastor’s timeThou shall explore the following resources to simplify and streamline media creation and worship planning communicationResources for great background videos/stills/countdowns/sermons startersResource for planning worship and communicating with worship staff/volunteersThou shall NOT use PowerPoint for presentation software if possible. There are MUCH better options out there designed specifically for worship settingsWhen recruiting a worship leader/organist/musician, thou shall consider that person’s heart for worship over and above their musical abilityThere is a distinct difference between a music leader and a worship leaderThat individual is facilitating a worship experience, not simply leading musicThou shall consider the church’s online presenceYour church website or social media page is the first impression for a visitor…not the parking lot or the front doorWebsites are time intensive to build and maintainConsider investing your time/energy in a relevant and current Facebook presence as an alternative to a website. Build an online culture to reach boomers and younger….This is free!Thou shall implement all media with intentionality and strive for excellencePoor media and implementation only provides a poor experienceThou shall consider recording/livestreaming sermons and make them available onlineWhen a sermon is posted online, it will have more viewership through that portal than limiting yourself to a Sunday morningPart of my ministry I extend to the annual conference is consulting with congregations on their audio/visual systems. I would be happy to dream with you about taking the next steps in your worship/media ministry! Give me a call at 563-349-8175 and we can set up a consultation to update your media capabilities! --Rev.
