Unit Learning Goal

It is the goal of this unit of instruction to inform the students about the Young Marines Program, the Organization of the Young Marines Program, and the Mission of the Young Marines.

Upon successful completion of this unit of instruction, the students will:

1. Identify the Young Marines Program

2. Identify the Organization of the Young Marines Program

3. Identify the Mission of the Young Marines

Young Marines is a youth-educational organization

1. Young Marines was established in 1965, and it is an international organization

2. Anyone between 8 and 18 years of age can join; however, one must take an oath to be drug free

Present unit goals and objectives

At the end of this lesson you will know what a Young Marines unit is.

Body

The Young Marines Program

1. The Young Marines is affiliated with the Marine Corps League, and supported by the United States Marine Corps.

2. A Young Marines unit is composed of both females and males.

3. Every young person that joins the unit must go through a 26-hour boot camp, and boot camp is held in 2-hour blocks of instruction over a 13-week period.

4. During the boot camp phase, each young person learns how to salute, drill, and Marine Corps history.

5. Boot camp is structured to build team spirit among the young people.

Young Marines Organization

1. The Organization is classified as a 501 c (3) through the Internal Revenue Service.

2. The unit can operate within the school environment, but it does not have to.

3. The unit is composed of adults that fill the roles of Commanding Officer, Executive Officer, Adjutant, Paymaster, and other command staff.

4. The Commanding Officer must be either on active duty in the Marine Corps or a reservist within the Marine Corps or a former Marine.

5. Either a veteran from another branch or a civil can fill the other positions.

6. There are three platoons; 1st platoon is comprised of high school age youths; 2nd platoon is comprised of middle school age youth, and 3rd platoon is the unit in which the primary age youths are placed.

7. Each platoon will have three squads, and each squad will have three fire teams.

Mission of the Young Marines Unit

To instill honor, courage, and commitment for ones self, ones country, and ones family.
