LEADER PREPARATION

BIBLE BASIS

This Scripture passage shares how God makes us free through his grace, and how we’re no longer slaves to sin but slaves of God. Paul explains that being a slave to sin brings death, but being a slave to God leads to righteous living. Kids will learn the difference between being a slave to sin and being a slave of God. They’ll also learn how being a slave of God changes the way they live because of the hope God’s grace gives us. Use this lesson to discover the power of God’s grace and how it changes our lives and how showing hope can change the lives of others as well.

DISCOVERY POINT

We show hope by how we live.

BIBLE FOCUS

Romans 6:15-23

KEY VERSE

“For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life through Christ Jesus our Lord” (Romans 6:23).

TEACHING PREP

The short overview below is designed to help you prepare for your lesson.

Supplies You’ll Need: Sticking With God: Knowing His Hope (Year 2/Quarter 7) CD, LIVE Children’s Curriculum (Year 2) DVD, CD player, TV/DVD player, empty shoe boxes or other gift boxes, paper, markers, tape, gift tags, wrapping paper, “Gift Giving” handout and newsprint

Before This Lesson

• Print the “Gift Giving” handout. You’ll need one copy per crew of four kids.

• Assemble Bible Exploration Kits (one per four kids): Bibles, “Gift Giving” handout, empty shoe boxes or other gift boxes (one for each child), paper, markers, tape, wrapping paper, gift tags, and one piece of newsprint.

• Review Romans 6:15-23.

• Cue "Into the Bible" (Track 1) on the Sticking With God: Knowing His Hope (Year 2/Quarter 7) CD or (Quarter 7/Track 1) on the LIVE Children’s Curriculum (Year 2) DVD.

• Huddle briefly with your volunteers beforehand. Answer any questions they have. Encourage them and pray.

PARENT EMAIL

We’ve provided you with a “Family Devotion” handout to send the Bible learning and faith discovery home. When kids and parents have faith discussions regularly, kids’ faith multiplies.

So we’ve given you two options:

• Print the “Family Devotion” handout and make enough copies for each child to take one home.

• Email the “Family Devotion” to families before or after the actual lesson.

Or why not do both? That way you’ll double the opportunities for parents to actually get the handout.

2. SAY: Have you ever seen “before” and “after” pictures? You know, like before and after a new haircut or before and after you get dressed for a special celebration, like a fancy party.

What else could be a “before” and “after” experience? Let’s take turns acting them out and see if others can guess what they are.

3. Have kids get into Bible Exploration Crews and take turns acting out “before” and “after” experiences for the others in their crew. If they need ideas, suggest things like a new haircut, new clothes, making a new friend, or even just growing taller. (Special note: Don’t suggest weight loss as an idea, and tell kids not to act out weight loss, as this subject could be sensitive for some.)

When everyone has had a chance to complete the activity, bring kids back together to discuss the following questions.

4. ASK:

• Pick one of the “before” and “after” demonstrations you saw. How did the “after” change the person?

• Tell about a time you experienced a “before” and “after” in your life. What changed?

5. SAY: Let’s pretend that something bad happened, like your friend said something mean to you and it made you sad. How might you look? Show me a sad face. Pause. Now something good happened, like your friend apologized and now you’re great friends again and you’re feeling happy. How might you look? Pause. That’s right! You all look really happy now! When something great happened, it changed all your faces. That’s what our lesson is about today. When God makes a very good change in us, it shows in our lives. When it shows, it can help others because we show hope by how we live. Let’s figure out how God changes us and what it means for us.

LET’S EXPLORE!

Supplies: assembled Bible Exploration Kits, LIVE Children’s Curriculum (Year 2) DVD, TV/DVD player

1. Start the “Digital Countdown” (Quarter 7/Countdown Track 2) on the LIVE Children’s Curriculum (Year 2) DVD, and turn the volume way up. Lead the kids in counting along.

SAY: The passage we’re about to read talks about being a slave of sin or a slave of righteousness. But what does that really mean? Slaves of sin live for themselves and whatever feels good. Slaves of righteousness, or slaves of God, live for God and God only. Have kids find the newsprint and markers in their Bible Exploration Kits. As a crew, ask them to draw two stick figures. Label one “A Slave of Sin” and the other one “A Slave of Righteousness.” For each figure, have kids think of descriptions of what kinds of things people are slaves to if they are a slave of sin or a slave of righteousness. For example, ask kids to think about what things kids their age might be slaves to, such as eating too much candy or watching way too much TV or disobeying parents. Encourage kids to write words around the stick figures that represent what each person is a slave to.

2. ASK:

• What are the differences between a slave of sin and a slave of righteousness?

• Which one do you think has the most hope and why?

3. SAY: Slaves of sin live for whatever feels good. Slaves of righteousness, or slaves of God, live only for God. Let’s read the Bible and find out what it has to say about slaves of sin and slaves of righteousness.

4. Have Bible Exploration Crews take the Bibles out of their Bible Exploration Kits. Help kids find the Scripture passage in their Bibles, Romans 6:15-23. Ask a child to read the Scripture passage.

5. ASK:

• Now that you’ve read what the Bible has to say, what else would you add to your descriptions on your stick figures? As kids think of things to add, have them write them on the newsprint.

• How is our Scripture passage like “before” and “after” pictures?

• What is it like knowing you can be free from sin?

• How can a slave of righteousness help others find hope in Jesus?

6. SAY: Our Scripture passage is the before and after of Jesus being a part of our lives. Before we have a friendship with Jesus, we may not even know that sin is our master and controls everything we do. After, we’re slaves to righteousness—we can do the things that make God happy, and that makes us happier. God makes that change in us. When others see the change in us, it can give them hope as well. We show hope by how we live. Now let’s explore what it means to share that hope with others.

7. Have kids find the “Gift Giving” handout in their Bible Exploration Kits. Ask them to read the Key Verse Romans 6:23, and use the paper, markers, boxes, gift wrap, tape, and gift tags to complete steps 1 through 3 on that page.

When crews have finished,

ASK:

• How could Romans 6:23 be a gift to someone?

• How can this verse give hope to someone?

• How can you show hope with your life?

SAY: When God changes our lives with his forgiveness, it gives us hope. Having that hope in us, we can’t help but share it with others. That’s what God wants us to do. God wants us to show hope by how we live.

LET’S PRAISE!

Supplies: Sticking With God: Knowing His Hope (Year 2/Quarter 7) CD, LIVE Children’s Curriculum (Year 2) DVD, CD player, TV/DVD player

1. SAY: Remember when we were practicing our “before” and “after” faces? The Bible passage we read tells about the before and after of having a friendship with Jesus. When we have a friendship with Jesus, God changes us. Let’s praise God as we sing and show “after” faces again!

2. Set up the Sticking With God: Knowing His Hope (Year 2/Quarter 7) CD or the LIVE Children’s Curriculum (Year 2) DVD. PLAY:

• “I Will Never Fail You” (Hebrews 13:5) (CD Track 2) (DVD Quarter 7/Track 2)

God has given you everything

You will need,

And you don’t have to worry.

Be satisfied.

Don’t even try to get more,

For God has said,

I will never fail you

Or abandon you.

I will never fail you

Or abandon you.

(Repeat.)

I will never fail you

Or abandon you.

I will never fail you

Or abandon you.

And God is a friend who will be there all the time.

We can talk to him, and he will listen.

God will always be right by your side

’Cause he says,

You are my friends if you do what I command.

Tell everyone what an awesome God I am.

You are my friends if you do what I command.

Trust me and love me: You’ll always be my friends.

• “We Can Trust Him” (Psalm 33:4) (CD Track 6) (DVD Quarter 7/Track 6)

If there’s one thing we can count on,

It’s that God will never let us down, and

We can trust everything he does.

He keeps his promises.

We know because

Yeah, the Word of the Lord holds true.

We can trust him.

We can trust him.

Yeah, the Word of the Lord holds true.

We can trust him.

We can trust him. Yeah!

We can trust him .

Yeah, the Word of the Lord holds true.

We can trust him.

We can trust him.

Yeah, the Word of the Lord holds true.

We can trust him.

We can trust him.

We can trust him.

We can trust him.

LET’S PRAY!

Supplies: gift boxes made during Let’s Explore!, Sticking With God: Knowing His Hope (Year 2/Quarter 7) CD, CD player

1. Have kids sit in a circle with the boxes they made during the Let’s Explore! in front of them.

SAY: In our Let’s Explore! time today, we made these gift boxes, not for ourselves, but for someone else. Take some time to commit your box to God. Ask God to show you who else you need to share this wonderful gift with this week.

2. Quietly play the instrumental version of “We Can Trust Him” (Psalm 33:4) (Track 14) from the Sticking With God: Knowing His Hope (Year 2/Quarter 7) CD. Ask kids to bow their heads and think about who they could share the gift box with this week. Have them think of three people who need to know that Jesus brings us hope. After a moment, ask them to join hands with each other as you close in prayer, asking God to give them strength and wisdom to follow through by sharing his great gift with others.

HIGH FIVES

Supplies: gift boxes made during Let’s Explore!

Have kids stand in a circle and hold their gift boxes.

SAY: God has set us free and gives us hope! And that’s something that everyone should know about. God wants us to show hope by how we live, so let’s hold your gift box in one hand as a crew and give a high five with the other hand. On the count of three, let’s yell “Share God’s gift!” Ready? One! Two! Three! “Share God’s gift!”

FOR-EXTRA-TIME ACTIVITIES

Freedom Run

Supplies: strips of construction paper, tape, a cross or altar, scissors

Have one group of four kids handcuff another group of four with strips of construction paper and tape. Have the ones who are handcuffed try to get free by running to the cross or altar to get the handcuffs cut off by another child waiting at the cross. Have the group that handcuffed them time the group to see how quickly they can get themselves free. Talk about how it feels to be freed and how it feels to help others get free, too.

Hiding It in Your Heart

Supplies: 3x4-inch pieces of paper, markers

Have kids each decorate a piece of paper any way they want, but it has to have the Key Verse, Romans 6:23, on it. Kids will write their names on the back of the paper, fold it, mix it up in a pile, and sit around the pile in a circle. Have a child reach into the pile, grab a paper, deliver it to the person who wrote it, and repeat the Key Verse. Then that person will reach into the pile and do the same thing. Continue until everyone has his or her paper back.

Create a Bible Dictionary

Supplies: paper, markers, dictionary, CD player, Sticking With God: Knowing His Hope (Year 2/Quarter 7) CD

Ask kids to create one or more pages, each with a new word, for a Bible dictionary. Have kids suggest words from today’s lesson—slaves and righteousness are two suggestions. Have them write each word on a sheet of paper in fun letters, add a definition, list Scripture references, and make illustrations. Play “The Books of the Bible Song” (Track 8), from the Sticking With God: Knowing His Hope (Year 2/Quarter 7) CD while kids work. Add each page to a three-ring binder, and watch the dictionary grow!
