GWASANAETH RADIO YSBYTY BRONGLAIS 87

Dear Enquirer,

Welcome to 87.8 RB FM, Bronglais Hospital radio! Opened in 1970, Radio Bronglais FM is proud to be one of the oldest hospital radio stations in the UK. We are a charity organisation, run entirely by volunteers, providing bilingual radio and befriending services for the staff and patients of Bronglais General Hospital, and the NHS services within its catchment area both on 87.8FM and online through rbfmlive.co.uk.

Our volunteers come from all walks of life but all share a passion for our personal befriending service and a commitment to bringing entertainment and informative services to the staff and patients of Bronglais Hospital and the local community. We are always eager to welcome new faces to our team, so if you are retired and have a couple of spare hours a week, are a student looking to gain experience, or just interested in getting involved with a local community project or working at a professional radio station we would love to hear from you!

There are many different ways in which you can contribute to RB FM, from administrative duties to presenting your own show, fundraising events to personal befriending within the hospital. Enclosed we have outlined some of the roles available within the station.

If after reading through the various job descriptions you are interested in joining our team, please complete the enclosed application form and return it via email to: office@rbfmlive.co.uk, or post it to us at:

Radio Presenters/Producers

Would you like to present or produce your own radio show? If you have no experience, it's not a problem - we will train you! Our training programme offers a friendly, informal service that (depending on individual speed of learning) could see you qualified for your own show in as little as 6-8 sessions! After mastering our equipment, new presenters and producers are invited to design and construct their own radio programme, from choosing the music they play to researching the features. We provide ongoing support throughout the process to ensure the highest standard of radio broadcasting. Presenters such as Radio 1’s Aled Haydn Jones started out at Radio Bronglais; just think, this could be you!

Audio/Technical

For those studying or interested in the technical aspects of broadcasting, audio technicians are always needed at a live professional radio station. Whether it’s seeing radio theory put into practice, learning how to create and edit audio files or fixing and maintaining broadcast equipment, there are always spaces for technical minded volunteers. As well as attending to the technical aspects of running a radio station, we also need individuals to upload our extensive music library to the main system and grab all the latest chart toppers for daily play out. The music librarians are responsible for maintaining our extensive library that comprises a wide range of genres and media, which cater for many different musical tastes. They also oversee the 24-hour sustaining service that operates when there isn’t a live show being broadcast and other miscellaneous technical tasks behind the scenes. They also help to improve and maintain the high level of sound quality the radio pumps out to its listeners!

Befrienders

One of our most important roles as hospital radio volunteers is to provide a friendly and supportive befriending service to patients and staff within Bronglais Hospital and the NHS services around mid-Wales. We work with Volunteering for Health to offer volunteers within Bronglais Hospital, supporting the staff and connecting with the patients. Our task may range from relieving boredom and having a laugh to collecting song requests and dedications. Hospitals can be lonely places at times, and a visit from a friendly face may help to alleviate some of the pains. Full training is provided, and we encourage anyone involved with our service to participate in some degree to this program.

Fundraisers

Fundraising is crucial for our charity as we do not receive money from an outside governing body. Instead we rely entirely on charitable donations from individuals and organisations throughout the year. Our fundraising activities concentrate on events that can range from live roadshows to fun days, supermarket collections to raffles. Fundraising is vital to the survival and growth of RB FM so all members are expected to ‘pitch in’ in some small way or another, be it selling Christmas raffle tickets or counting pennies from collection tins! We are always eager to hear new ideas. We encourage all of our members to plan and execute their own event at least once during their time with us.

Administrators

Outside of the on-air side of things, there is plenty of work to be done behind the scenes. There will be opportunities to work in marketing, press events, acquiring giveaway prizes and booking guests, finance, and liaising with outside organisations. Ensuring correspondence is sent out on time, is sorted and filed correctly and helping run the RB FM office are crucial roles that must be fulfilled by our volunteers.

Journalist/Writer

In 2016, Radio Bronglais FM is launching a new free magazine for the benefit of the mid-Wales community. The magazine will be championing the ideals of the station and of the hospital it serves, providing a platform for staff to engage with the outside community, local organisations and charities to publicise their activities and services, writers to publish stories and poems, artists and photographers to showcase their works, cryptographers to sharpen their skills, and local people to communicate with each other. Our magazine is printed in large print, and is recorded and broadcast on the air every Sunday for those who wish to listen to its contents. Just think; what would you like to read about if you were stuck in hospital?

Others

If you don't identify with any of the roles listed but are keen to offer your help anyway, we would still like to hear from you. Just an extra pair of hands is all that is needed in many situations ... and, of course, you might learn some new skills whilst helping us and working for a local charity is a great addition to any CV! Below is just some of the many other ways you can get involved:

• Events team
