NB : (1) Answer SIX Questions :

SECTION -1 :- Answer atleast TWO Questions

SECTION -2 :- Answer atleast TWO Questions

(2) All Questions carry equal marks

(3) Neatness in handwriting and clarity in expression carries weightage

(4) Illustration of an Answer with clear sketches / diagrams carries weightage.

SECTION – 1

1. (a) With the aid of a sketch describe a diode barrier system that may be fitted in an electrical circuit designated intrinsically safe.

(b) Explain the operation of the diode barrier shown in the circuit in (a)

2. With reference to electronic control systems:

a) Draw a simple block diagram for temperature control;

b) Describe each component shown in the diagram in (a).

3. (a) State the necessary conditions required prior to the synchronizing of electrical alternators.

(b) Describe the type of cumulative damage that may be caused when alternators are incorrectly Synchronized.

a) Explain how the damage referred to in (b) can be avoided / reduced.

b) for two alternators operating in parallel the consequences of :

(i) Reduced torque from the prime mover of one machine.

(ii) Reduced excitation on one machine.

4. With reference to an emergency source of electrical power in cargo ships :-

a) Describe a typical power source.

b) Give a typical list of essential services, which must be supplied simultaneously.

c) Explain how the emergency installation can be periodically tested.

5. The torque produced by a motor when its shaft will not turn, even though rated voltage is applied to the stator, is known as _____________.

a) locked-rotor torque

b) pullout torque

c) breakdown torque

d) torque margin

Give a reasoned explanation to support your answer

SECTION - 2

6. What are the units of length, mass and force in the SI system of units?

A current of 12 A produces a magnetic flux of 0.4 mWb in a coil of 60 turns. What e.m.f. would be induced in the coil if the current of 12 A was reversed in 1/40 th second? What is the inductance of the coil in Henrys?

7. The field windings of a motor comprise 8 coils connected in series, each coil having 1200 turns, The flux linked with each coil is 0.05 Wb when the current is 5A. Calculate the inductance of the field circuit and the value of the average e.m.f.induced, if the current was cut off in 50 ms.

8. Find the core cross-sectional area in mm², the number of turns and the position of the tapping point for a 50kVA, 50Hz, single-phase, 3700/2500V auto-transformer, assuming that the e.m.f. per turn is 7V and the maximumflux density is 1.5T.

9. An inductor has an inductance of 0.1 H and resistance of 10 ohm, When it is connected in series with a capacitor across a 220 V, 100 Hz supply the circuit resonates. Calculate the capacitance value of the capacitor and the voltage across the inductor.

10. Explain what is meant by, and the significance of, four of the following terms.

a) Voltage stabilization

b) Filter choke\

c) Impedance

d) Rectification

e) Grid bias voltage.
