BIOGRAPHYMarilyn Elizabeth (Patton) Garcia grew up in Brooklyn, New York in the Louis H. Pink Housing Projects and was born on August 12th, 1957. She has been writing for over forty years. Marilyn is an author, poet, writer, journalist, spoken word recording artist and entrepreneur. Ms. Garcia’s first spoken word and Jazz album “Mysteries Of A Woman” music was composed and produced by Roger Carter of “Shoestring Productions”. Her first album was released on Amazon and I-tunes in April of 2014. The single from her album “Can You Spare Some Change” was blasted all over the world on “The Warming Up With DJ Randy P Spoken Word Showcase” Radio Show in April 2014. She has maintained the #1 Spoken Word Artist spot for over a year in Upstate New York on the Reverb Nation web site and until this date, is still on the top of the charts. Other poems from her debut album are included as well in “The Collected Poetry Of M.E.G.” which will be published in 2015. Marilyn is a member of the “Board Of Directors” at the “Binghamton YWCA” and is on the “Funding and Development Committee”. She is former Second Vice President of the “Broome/Tioga Branch NAACP, member of (NCNW) “National Council of Negro Women” (Semper Fidelis Section) and member of the “International Society of Poets”. On May 14th 2014, she received a letter of recognition from the Binghamton YWCA for her participation in the 2014 “Stand Against Racism” event. On January 20th 2012, she also received a letter of recognition from the “Broome County Martin Luther King Commission” for her participation in the January 16th 2012 “Martin Luther King Jr Celebration” in Binghamton, New York. On April 5th 2008 Marilyn received a Merit Award from the Broome/Tioga Branch NAACP for her participated in the first annual “Dream Deferred Luncheon” which Marilyn and then president Christina Archie Brown facilitated. The “Broome County Status Of Women’s Council” honored Marilyn, with the “Women Of Achievement Award” on November 12th 2008. On November 2nd 2007, she received the “Outstanding Individual Contributor Award” from the Broome/Tioga Branch NAACP. March 25th 2007, Marilyn received the “Women Of Achievement in Literature Award” from the NCNW (Semper Fidelis Section). In 2007, 2005 and 2003, she received the “Editor’s Choice Award” for outstanding achievement in poetry. Marilyn is the Founder and President of “The Binghamton Poetry and Writers Group”. For several years, Marilyn has taught creative writing classes to seniors at “The Johnson City Senior Center”. She has also taught a class at “The Broome County Public Library” as part of the “Broome County Summer Reading Program”. Marilyn has self-published several Creative Writing Workbooks that teaches how to write poetry, short-stories, biographies, auto-biographies and a series of free writing exercises. Some of her workbooks include “The Binghamton Creative Writing Workshop (Senior & Youth Divisions), “Discover Creative Writing, and “The Prison Project” which she hopes will teach inmates how to write and publish their books to support the families they have left financially struggling in society. Marilyn recently started her own publishing company “Mercedes Essence House” (“Destination Books”). “Mitchell Edward Harris” “My Journey Home”, is the first book to be written and published by Marilyn’s publishing company, which is a written and visual biography about his life.“The Binghamton Poetry & Writer’s Group” has participated and held many poetry readings and open mics in their community. For several years, Marilyn has participated in the annual “Albany Word Festival”. She enjoys reading poetry in schools throughout the country during April, which is “National Poetry Month”. She has also read poetry during the yearly Broome County “Juneteenth Celebration” in Binghamton and at the “Martin Luther King Junior Celebrations”.Marilyn is also a journalist and freelance writer for her local newspaper. On March 30th 2008, Valerie Zehl, a “View Points” columnists for the Binghamton “Press & Sun Bulletin Newspaper” wrote an article on Marilyn (“Writer Shares Her Gift With NAACP, Others”). She has appeared in and has written numerous articles for the same newspaper. Ms. Garcia is a 2001 graduate of MWBE (Minority Women’s Business Enterprise) Entrepreneurial assistance program. She received “The New York State Senate Excelsior Award”, “Certificate Of Special Congressional Recognition” and the “BSB Bank &Trust Company Certificate Of Recognition” for her company “Mercedes Clothing & Accessories” (“The Clothing Store On Wheels”) which she started.Ms. Garcia’s Poetry Books include “Poetic Climb” published by Authorhouse in 2006 and “My Wave Of Words”, published by RoseDog Books in 2005. Her poetry is featured as well, in several Anthologies such as “Timeless Voices”, “The Best Poems & Poets of 2005”, “The Colors Of Life” and “Great Poems Of The Western World” excellence in poetry series. ................
