Demographics Needs

Bennett Elementary prides itself on being the "Best School in McKinney." Bennett students are eager to attend school consistently and on time for their instructional day. Bennett's attendance rate for the 2013-2014 school year was 96.7%. This year we are striving to achieve a 98% attendance rate at Bennett Elementary. Our goal is to maintain a high attendance rate in support of the Superintendent/District Performance Goal of 96.9% attendance rate for MISD.

To address students in special populations, we will continue to implement on-site and district level trainings to support special education students, gifted students, and English Language Learners (ELL). Specifically, we are striving for 100% of our ESL teachers to receive SIOP training to understand the research-based framework of the sheltered instruction approach for English Language Learners by the end of the 2014-2015 school year. We will identify ELL students at the beginning of the year and meet quarterly to monitor performance and progress. Our staff participated in SIOP training during Academy, as well as work in support of the McKinney ISD Bilingual and ESL department to ensure students, staff, and parents have the necessary materials, training and support to foster academic, social, and emotional support. Our campus goal is to increase student achievement of our ELL/SPED students as measured by 2015 STAAR Reading. Bennett special population team collaborates, meets, trains, and confers with the Greer Special Education department to conduct learning walks, classroom visits, consult, and training to ensure all students are served to their highest capacity.

There is room for improvement in the percentage of students participating in the Alpha Program. Participation in the Alpha program lacks a balanced representation according to our overall enrollment by ethnicity.

Student Achievement

Student Achievement Summary

The educators and staff at Bennett Elementary are committed to "capturing kids hearts" to promote academic success for all. As a learning community, we build positive relationships with all students and parents to promote the effectiveness of the home-school partnership to foster student success. Together, we will strive to maintain an excellent education for all by promoting exemplary behavior and performance.

Measures of Academic Progress (MAP), STAAR, Developmental Reading Assessment (DRA), Istation, Think Through Math, as well as a wide variety of other data sources, have been utilized in the development of Bennett's campus improvement plan. Our data will be reviewed in depth by teachers and staff to plan for instruction and interventions to meet the academic needs of all students. The staff at Bennett Elementary will continue to use and communicate multiple measures of data for student learning as supported in the Superintendent/District Performance Objectives.

Student Achievement Strengths

During a student's educational career at Bennett Elementary our exemplary teachers strive to equip every child with the highest capacity of learning to be successful in their continual education. This is evident in our K-5th student assessment data.

As evident in the table below, at risk students are identified early and intervention takes place in order for students to close any instructional gaps:

Reading Kinder (DRA) 1st (DRA) 2nd (DRA)

% Met Standard 93% (DRA 4-6) 87% (DRA 18-20) 99% (DRA 30-34)

% Commended 66% (DRA > 8) 67% (DRA > 24) 62% (DRA > 34)

During the 2013-2014 school year, Bennett served 11 English Language Learners. 4 out of the 11 students improved 1 or more levels on their TELPAS Composite Rating. 4 out of 11 remained at the highest level which is Advanced High. 3 out of 11 students were new to Bennett Elementary and did not have previous TELPAS ratings. The focus of McKinney ISD and Bennett Elementary is to increase the academic performance and achievement for all ELL students as supported in the Superintendent/District Performance Goals. To support this important district and campus goal, the staff at Bennett Elementary partner with the MISD Bilingual/ESL Director and Coordinators through campus meetings, providing materials/resources to teachers, parents and staff, and by training our staff on important SIOP strategies during Academy.

At Bennett Elementary, we believe that continuous growth provides opportunity and challenge. MAP data is used to monitor second through fifth grade students' academic growth. It is our goal that all students surpass their projected growth each school year. In addition, we strive for 100% of students to score above the standard norm. The table below indicates the percentage of students that scored above the standard norm in the Spring of 2014.

Bennett Spring 2014 MAP Data

2nd Grade 3rd Grade 4th Grade 5th Grade

Math Reading 95% 100% 93% 91% 75% 88% 76% 85%

The research-based Developmental Reading Assessment is used in K-2 classrooms to pinpoint students' strengths and abilities as readers. At Bennett Elementary, our goal is for 100% of students to be reading at the expected end of year reading level for their grade level. At the end of the 2013-2014 school year, 88% of kindergartners, 84% of first graders, and 88% of second graders were reading at their expected reading level.

School Culture and Climate

School Culture and Climate Summary

A positive school climate enhances learning and is necessary to maintain the safety of all students, staff and parents. At Bennett, we believe strongly in our culture and work hard on a daily basis to maintain strong belief in our school, clear communication, and safety and security for all members of our learning community. Cooperation of all of our learning community helps to create and maintain high standards. Our #1 goal is to provide a safe and secure learning environment conducive to the highest standards of learning.

School Culture and Climate Strengths

Tribes: Bennett Elementary has adopted "Tribes." A Tribes school is a learning community where teachers, administrators, students, and parents all enjoy the mutual respect and caring essential for growth and learning. At the beginning of school, teachers lead a discussion with their students about what each student needs in order to feel safe. After brainstorming, they synthesize the ideas into the five agreements which we know as the "Tribe Agreements:"

Right to Pass Mutual Respect No Put Downs/Appreciations Attentive Listening Never Give Up

These five agreements are the core school-wide expectations. Each teacher is also encouraged to create a social contract or agreement of behavior with their class incorporating the above agreements.

Community Circle: Building community is a deliberate process that Bennett teachers facilitate over a period of time. It begins by creating inclusion for every person within the intended learning community and by practicing the set of positive Tribes agreements. Students meet daily in a community circle for sharing, discussions on curricula, learning cooperative skills, reflecting on the day, and celebrating. Community Circle each day helps each student feel valued and foster resiliency: caring and sharing, participation, and positive expectations.

Student Management of Discipline with Love and Logic: Student management of discipline is one of the most important aspects of teaching. Without an appropriate classroom climate and relationship with students, a teacher cannot provide the best learning environment. All adults actively and consistently support high expectations for behavior by modeling our policies.

We use "Love and Logic" at Bennett Elementary which has three basic rules: Use enforceable limits, Provide choices within limits, and Apply consequences with empathy. This philosophy states that "discipline involves building students up so they feel more capable ? better about themselves, in a healthy way, even after a discipline situation. For this to be accomplished, we must consider internalized control vs. external enforcement." Internal controls are much
