Information about Friendly Letters

In the friendly letter format, your address and date are all indented towards the right half of the page (how far you indent in is up to you as long as your address, date, closing, and signature are lined up). Also, the first line of each paragraph is indented.

1Your AddressAll that is needed is your street address on the first line and the city, state and zip on the second line.

2Date Put the date on which the letter was written in the format monthdayyear. (August 24, 2015).

3SalutationStart out with Dear then your teacher's name, or Hi then your teacher's name. Note: There is a comma after the end of the salutation (You can use an exclamation point also if there is a need for some emphasis).

4Body The body is where you write the content of the letter the paragraphs should be DOUBLE but do NOT skip an extra line between each paragraph. Hit RETURN two times between the end of the body and the closing.

5ClosingLet the reader know that you are finished with your letter by ending with Sincerely, Sincerely yours, Thank you, or Your student. Note that there is a comma after the end of the closing, and only the first word in the closing is capitalized.

Introduce Yourself

* Address your letter to your LA teacher (Dear Ms. Isaacs/Ms. Tuchfarber,)

Paragraph 1--Tell me about yourself. This may include things like your family, your pets, your house, your room, your personality, and/or your friends.

Paragraph 2--Continue discussing yourself, focusing on your hobbies, activities, clubs, sports, or any passions that you have. What are you involved in or what are your plans for involvement at MMS and outside of MMS?

Paragraph 3--Tell me about your strengths and weaknesses as a student, most specifically in language arts. What traits are you looking for in me, your teacher, in order for you to best succeed? Is there anything that you would like me to know that might help me to understand your learning ability or struggles?

Paragraph 4--Find a quote that best describes your feelings or attitude and explain why this quote is meaningful to you OR tell me about the most important story or book you have ever read. Don't summarize the book or story instead, explain why it made such an impact. This paragraph is very telling of someone's personality, so make a strong first impression on me. If you choose the quote option and know who said the quote, include the author.
