ENGLISH CONTENT SPECIALIZATION FOR CANDIDATES:
The M.A.T. in English Education is designed to include initial certification to teach English, grades 6-12—with ESOL Endorsement ()—while working towards a Master's degree. It is planned for graduates of B.A. Liberal Arts English programs or for graduates of other programs who have completed the following English courses within their programs of study: grammar, history/development of language, adolescent literature, American literature, British literature, world literature, female/minority literature, expository writing and creative writing. Before students may graduate, all candidates must have completed—either within the degree itself or in addition to it—the NCATE/NCTE English Requirements for Certification, Grades 6-12. All content courses must be taken before Internship. (See page two).
REQUIRED CERTIFICATION EXAMS: All parts of the Florida Teacher Certification Exam (cefe.usf.edu)
Proof of passing all sections of the FTCE Professional AND Subject Area Tests (English 6-12) must be submitted to the Graduate Office before you will be allowed to intern. NO EXCEPTIONS! Contact Graduate Advising (813) 974-9649 for clarification regarding testing and internship.

OTHER REQUIREMENTS BEFORE GRADUATION: Before graduating with a Master’s Degree, all candidates must take and successfully pass a Master’s Comprehensive Examination in English Education at the end of their program. Students must be registered in LAE 6637 during the semester in which the examination is taken. Students must be enrolled in at least 2 graduate hours the semester they intend to graduate and must apply to graduate September for Fall, January for Spring, and June for Summer Commencement. IMPORTANT: Students who miss three consecutive semesters will be dropped from their programs, must reapply for admission, and will be subject to any changes that might have occurred since their planned programs were submitted. In some cases, students will have to repeat courses already taken.
No grade below a B is accepted in this program!
