Lodging Operations: Course Project

Group project 30%

You will create a lodging operation based on all the material in the course. The main idea is to create something that would work in real life and could be successful. Bonus points are available for outstanding and original ideas.

Think of the project as building your basic knowledge of the lodging industry and hospitality industry. We will work on the projects at least once per week in the class with help from me. It is important to organise yourself with a project leader.

Each will group will tell me who did which part of the project for further assessment. Any people relying too much on other people or being lazy will fail the course.

Create a lodging operation/business. You will choose between one of the following:

• Full-service hotel

• Limited-service hotel

• Boutique hotel

• Convention hotel

• Health resort

• Eco-tourism hotel/resort

• Casino hotel

• Cruise ship

• Extended stay hotel

• Historic conversion

• Lodge

• A 21st century lodging idea

It will require a report all about the lodging operation. You will also have to present it to the class with a view to convincing your classmates that it would be a good business idea. Your classmates will rate your lodging operation and give me feedback, which will have an influence on your grade.

You will have to outline in report the following:

• Where in the world it is and details about the surrounding area (include a map)

• How large it is (how many rooms, maximum guest numbers)

• Amenities and services offered

• Target market in detail and why you think that market(s) is the best

• Ownership of the lodging business

• Create a lodging operation policy

• Organizational chart with all the departments

• All about HRM: The number of staff, how you recruit, what type of people and their general duties

• Security and maintenance

• Any F&B service that the lodging operation offers (type of F&B services etc.)

• Waste and energy management

• Sales and marketing team (you should cover this in your tourism sales course)

• The revenue management system you would like to use

• What technology you will have as well as any reservation system

• Outline your service ideas – how will you serve your customers, handle complaints etc.

I will give you a format outline in the near future which must be followed if you are to receive a good grade.
