MAMARONECK HIGH SCHOOL2016-17 GUIDE TO CLUBS?I am excited to share this new MHS Guide to Clubs with you. It has been completely updated with help from the students who are leading the clubs this year. As you will quickly see, MHS has a thriving, exciting club scene that reflects the breadth of interests of our students. We know there will be something (and hopefully, many things) that will sound interesting to you and will entice you to become involved in our school. The rewards of involvement are abundant: opportunities to make new friends who share an interest, learn something new, help someone, contribute to our school community and beyond and develop leadership skills. If you have an interest that is not represented by a current club or Student Led Group (aka SLG), I would love to help you start your own club. Come see me in my office (directly across from the café) and we can talk about it.To all students and parents, and, most especially, to our new MHS families, I encourage you to read through this booklet and let it be an invitation to join the vibrant community of Mamaroneck High School. Please stop in to see me or call me with any questions. I would be delighted to help you in any way that I can.Carol SchefflerCoordinator of Student Affairs220-3141, HYPERLINK "mailto:cscheffler@" cscheffler@How do I sign up for a club or SLG?Club Fair will be on October 18th at lunch outside on the track, weather permitting, or inside if it is raining. We will also have a second Club Fair in January. There are tables for each club and representatives are there to answer your questions and encourage you to sign up.If I sign up for a club or SLG am I committing myself in anyway? No, you are merely expressing interest in the club. Club Leaders will contact you when the club becomes active to invite you to come to meetings. If you don’t want to get involved, just email the person who contacted you to let them know you won’t be able to participate. And, don’t feel badly about changing your mind. Everyone understands that people’s available time changes.Do I have to apply or audition to get into any clubs? Most clubs at MHS are open to everyone. Involvement is almost always up to you. There are some special clubs where involvement is by audition or application, but they are the exception. For instance, an a cappella group might require an audition. Peer Leaders and Caprice Advisors are both mentoring programs and are off shoots of the Counseling Department. Both programs select students through an application process. Student Council is an elected position. How many clubs or SLGS should I join?It depends on many factors that only you and your parents can gauge. Some clubs meet infrequently and don’t require much time at all. Others have a busy time of year. Still others require a significant time commitment. Think about the other commitments in your life including school work, job, lessons, athletics and outside volunteer work. Try to fit in some club activity. Remember, you are not obligating yourself if it is overwhelming. What is the difference between a club and a student interest group (SLG)?Clubs have faculty or staff advisors. They meet in rooms with the advisor who offers guidance and support to the club. SLGS are entirely student led and meet in public areas of MHS or outside school. Nearly all faculty advisors volunteer their time to assist with clubs. Those noted with an asterisk (*) receive a stipendACADEMIC CLUBS & SLGsArchitecture ClubPresident: William MurphyAdviser: Mr. RomanekWe meet to encourage an appreciation for architecture.
