Dear

Dear ,

Greetings from America! This is Hannah and I’m starting this letter because I’m closest in age to you (I’m eight). That’s me on the left with my little sister, Catherine. She goes by her nickname, Catie, and she’s five. We’re wearing our Easter dresses on the way to church. We’re standing near one of the gardens in our front yard with azaleas blooming behind us. It looks like my left leg is broken but I’m really just twisting it!

My family is very happy that you are coming to South Carolina to visit for the summer. I think it will be a lot hotter here than where you live. In fact, the heat is atrocious! So, we’ll be able to go to the neighborhood pool often and also to the beach on the South Carolina coast.

We won’t be staying in South Carolina the whole time. We’ll be taking a driving trip to Virginia and Pennsylvania to visit two sets of grandparents and other family, and also to see neat things. My mother’s parents live in Mount Vernon, Virginia, (right around the corner from our first president George Washington’s house) and my father’s parents live in Reading, Pennsylvania (that’s pronounced REH-DING, like the town in England that it’s named after). We’ll also take you to see the nation’s capital of Washington, D.C. – it’s a very beautiful city with lots to see.

My brother, Taylor, will also be visiting while you’re here and go on the trip north with us. He lives in Florida with his Mom and he’s 16. His hair is auburn like many people in Ireland and it’s longer than mine! He’s very nice (a little quiet) and he’s a very good guitar player. Sometimes, he thinks my sister and I are really annoying…I guess we are! He’s learning to drive but he’s not allowed to drive with kids in the car.

I think you’ll like our house – we’ll have plenty of room. We have a piano and a guitar if you like to play. We have scooters and lots of toys and we’re going to borrow a bicycle for you to ride, too. We also have a dog named Wednesday. She’s getting a little old now at 10 years old but she’s very sweet and she loves everybody. This picture is from Christmas…my Mom always puts a scarf on Wednesday for the holidays. We have two other pets also – a goldfish named Apollo and a gerbil named Treasure. I love animals and I’m sure we will visit the Riverbanks Zoo here in Columbia while you’re with us – it’s a great zoo!

This is my dad, John, enjoying some birthday cake. He’s a pilot in the U.S. Air Force. He’s not flying right now, but when he was, he flew fighter jets. He’s a little goofy, as you can tell!

My mom, Laura, stays home right now and takes care of us. She’s got a lot of things planned for us this summer, including going to the pool, having sleepovers at our house and doing all sorts of fun things. She wants to know what your favorite foods are, and if your mom or grandma can send some of your favorite recipes so we can try them. Also, bring some pictures of your family!

You might be sleeping in my room by yourself, or in my sister’s room with her or we can all bunk together. Mom says it’s up to you. She wants me to let you know that right after you get here we’re going to have some family friends with their four kids visiting for a couple of days. It’ll be loud, but we’ll have lots of fun! Right after they leave, we leave on our vacation up to Washington, D.C., and Pennsylvania.

Well, that’s about all from here. We can’t wait to see you! I think we’ll have a great time!

Your new friend,
