Idiom/Slang Quiz

Target audience: Junior high 1st graders (but can be adapted to higher levels)

Objective: (a) To introduce students to funny American English expressions.

(b) To encourage students to think creatively about alternative meanings for simple English words. The expressions I chose mostly contain vocabulary that JHS 1nensei already know, so they enjoyed guessing the connotations (while additionally being puzzled by the literal meanings).

Materials: (1) Worksheet (attached)

(2) PowerPoint multiple choice quiz (with literal pictures and animation)

Procedure:

Practice with examples (10 minutes)

Go over some easy example expressions with the students beforehand. I used “pig out,” “piece of cake,” and “have a big mouth.” The JTE should explain clearly that these are idioms and should not be taken literally.

Quiz (30 minutes)

Read each slide and have the students write a, b, or c in the left column of the worksheet.

Check the correct answers with the PowerPoint again.

Have students write the correct Japanese meaning in the right column.

Additional Information: You will need help from your JTE with creating the appropriate (and funny!) Japanese answers. Also, many students asked about the origin of each expression, and unfortunately some of them are unknown. Just do some research and be prepared to have an answer (i.e. “have a cow” equates to a person giving birth to a cow, etc.). Go over every expression in detail with the JTE beforehand so that he or she can effectively explain these to the students.
