As I canNo would like toNo. I play catch up to meet my contractYes, today No can’t afford, the struggle is realNo, not yet!Yes, when I attend No just arrived in areaNo not yet Yes, cash only Will now Yes, when I remember Yes, wish tithing was encouraged more – are we still a tithing parish10. When the parish was formed, the focus was on serving the less fortunate using our time, talent and treasure. Do you see evidence of this in our parish today?Yes 253No 11Don’t know 1 Comment I would like to see more folks participating in liturgy ministries There is certainly less service since the food pantry/thrift shop are now separate. Haiti efforts, parish thrift store, food bank Don’t know to answerThrift store and food pantry Food pantry, Kairos, Thrift Shop Thrift shop, food pantryFood pantry, CHWC, service projects, Haiti Collections, donations Yes but we could do betterParish thrift store, Haiti, etc.A lot less than in earlier yearsYes but mostly with treasure Youth groups focus on this Thrift shopFood pantry, CHWCHaiti, work on PORT, thrift shop, Catholic HeartNo homebound. Not less fortunate as a parish prison ministry some are able to give more money Haiti, food pantry, soup kitchen Through the ministries Very little Parish makes good effortNot sure…regret my participation is limited – but hope to change that (random remark on side) maybe a military group? We have strayed a bit since I started coming. I feel we should focus more on that Yes, but not as muchThrift shop, St. Paul’s donations, CHWCHaitiFood pantry, thrift shop whose profits help the less fortunatePantry, collection for less fortunate, Haiti service, all very good Special involvement with Haiti is greatSt. Paul’s soup kitchen, Disaster Relief collections and youth ministry outreach Israeli wood carver visit; Father Bob’s comments following Charlottesville riot; collection for hurricane survivorsIt is evident in the ministries, sister church in Haiti, etc. Youth activities, Haiti, thrift store, food bank Yes but not at the same level as at the beginning (1991-92)Less evident than in past, seems to be in decline! Yes, but it has clearly decreased in the number of active participants Haiti committee, visiting the sickNot sure Not as much Thrift store and food pantry Does not apply – I am not yet active in parish activities Thrift shop; work campsThrift store, food pantry, ministering to the sickHaiti ministry, thrift shop and food pantry volunteers (although not now sponsored by us) we see less evidence than formerlyCatholic Heart/thrift shop/food pantry Seems to be in-line with other parishes I’ve been inSome Food bank our sister church in Haiti, cookie ministry, soup kitchen, sandwich makingThrift shop/food pantry No, I left because it became the focus of everything Not qualified to answer Yes, but not as much as could be Yes it would be nice to hear at Mass about some of the accomplishments and statusYes, unfortunately our most obvious and direct method – thrift shop – is now “detached” similar to SHAREHaiti but not local Yes just 5 days Food pantry – thrift shopFood drives Parish thrift store, food pantryYes, but newer members do not seem to undertake a ministry. And the older members are tired and not as able as 30 years ago. At the beginning of our parish many women did not work outside the home. Now I think most women do have a job. They are tired, have children who are involved in many activities and therefore their families are also involved. Difficult to do “extra” at St. K. too many obligations. I have reached out to some neighbors and that is what I was told. And I see that. Food pantry is an excellent exampleRecent example with hurricane relief But not as much as we did in the past, there is no communityPrison ministry Food pantry and many other ministries Yes not all the time, but in important ways Yes, but not as strongly Yes, but not as much as before. There has been no emphasis on ministry Some With food collection It often seems the emphasis is on Poquoson area versus other parish areasDo not know I’m new but I believe so One of the reasons we are moving to St. K. more mission-centered, especially in local community Parish thrift shop- youth activities Have not been attending long enough to commentYes in the food pantry and other ministries Food pantryBut less emphasis now. Need more = more parish unity! Maybe some additional emphasis on house churches participation would help! Collecting food for the food pantry and hurricane relief collections Food pantry, soup kitchen, Catholic Heart work camp, KAIROSYes, but not as much Prison and Caribbean ministries Yes, needs more participation from church members11. How would you describe your experience during Mass at Kateri?Comment: Solemn, reflective, joyousEnjoy the quiet atmosphere. Last church the pastor scolded us. I like the homily addresses the teachings of the Gospel Excellent Peaceful, very rewardingI love Mass!Warm priest, good music, like being with our family, feel a part of it all, could be more reverent and more dogmatic at times, space makes reverence harder, new chairs warmed it up Uplifting, community Love the music! Homilies are nice, I miss the kneelers and quiet time before Mass.Good, would be better if we had a church building (sanctuary) The Eucharist is meaningful Very enjoyable, we like your pithy and succinct homilies, Father! Involved. The homilies bring meaning to me from week to weekLove receiving Eucharist. Enjoy Fr.’s homilies ContentmentVery enjoyable and spiritually rewardingGreat Very niceOutstanding Very good Fulfilling my spiritual needsFulfillment So-so. There is a lack of reverence in the parish. People talking, drinking, not respecting the body. Ritual has its place in promoting reverence and we have lost much useful ritual. Ok +/- overabundance of songs/verses. Perhaps a distraction. Distraction from Mass message Very good, focused, good sermons, good musicIt’s nice and accepting :)Thoughtful. Fr. Bob’s homilies are concise and informative, good bridge to modern life, music a definite plus Content Much enjoyed, a very friendly parish Good Good Spiritual Fulfilling Welcoming, educational, thought-provoking Very good, excellent sermons, thought-provoking Very good Positive. I am very involved in Mass. I enjoy Father and the community very muchOk Very positive sermons are wonderful, concise to the point not rambling Good Brings peaceFine, we are grateful for the new chairs We very much appreciate Children’s Liturgy Good Good Positive more so than in the pastFulfilling Great Satisfying Fr. Bob is doing a great job Content – happy – music could be a bit more joyfulGood prayer, but could be betterSpiritual fellowship, could do better with music Very good Peaceful and comfortable with the new chairs. Thanks!Ok but don’t seem to get a lot out of MassPleasant Great sermons, friendly parishioners Uplifting Feeds my soulVery goodUplifting Home. It is nice to see folks we know at Sat/Sun or daily massToo much singing – I wish we had a dedicated church building miss the traditional church Renewed I am fed for my spiritual needs. I also receive blessings when I attend Mass at a xxxxx church in Williamsburg with my friend Monica I return to St. Joe’s in Buckroe former parish as a good home comingWelcoming and pleasant Overall good, but at times at times the music distracts from the Mass, i.e. can’t understand versus during psalter Is different for each member of the family I love coming to mass and experience the presents of Jesus but is hard to get the family engaged in the same wayVery positive; love Fr. Bobs homilies and peaceful atmosphere he promotesPositive, friendly, timely, welcoming. On point does not drag on. I really appreciate thatWe would both like the focus on reverence to be exclamated Fulfilling Home. Feels the same as it always has my whole lifeWe do not (like) where the choir is located. It’s a huge distraction Good Welcoming/reflective/homilies are instructive Very welcoming (registered in Sep) reassuring of personal challengesNice. I would like for there to be more traditional aspects included to the MassGreat it’s all I need Good The mass is pleasant but very different than how I was raised, i.e. kneeling, Altar service, etc. Positive Good We love our church family and enjoy the MassMass at Kateri is spiritual and welcoming. I feel at home when I walk in the doorsPleasant and fulfillingLiving or professing our faith as one which I feel has to do with Fr. Bob. Engaged Fine Satisfactory Enjoy Okay. I like to pray before Mass and it is noisy. My wife wishes it looked more like a traditional church Welcoming, excitedPlease see back sheet for suggestions. Please consider missals so we can read along with lectors! Please consider printing/including all of the verses of the responsorial psalm! While it is evident that our parish is lively and welcoming parish, it is very difficult to prepare oneself for Mass upon entering the building because of all the chatting and socializing going on…even while the cantor is making announcements. It is very distracting. Why couldn’t the rule be to reverently be quiet before Mass and then chat and socialize afterwards – like most every other Catholic Parish?Positive Inspiring Fulfilling, enriching Great Excellent Good. Like incorporating youth into Mass. Like new chairs. Comfy! I feel that Mass aids me in expanding myself mentally and spirituallyLook forward to coming each weekI feel part of the Mass through my ministries, the service and the music. I do miss some of the ‘older’ songsGood Very positive I am a new member and really enjoy the hospitalityExcellent Celebration of the Eucharist is good and inspiring. The congregation is not so spiritually engaged – participation does not seem enthusiastic or devotedSpiritual – priest sermons short and to the Gospel messagePoor. No community, really no friends to be made outside of Mass, cold Great. I love that Father Bob interacts with the children. Warm communityFr. Bob seems MOST aware of encouraging us to JOIN into the worship and prayerVery good SatisfiedPositive, community-based Peaceful Very positiveCalm, friendly, contemporary Positive and fulfilling Spiritually fulfilling Improved since Father Bob came. More kid friendlyVery favorable. Always leave feeling renewed, refreshed and with a hopeful spiritPositivePositive welcoming Peaceful, I enjoy the experience hereVery welcoming, eye-opening and pleasant Good Reflective, communal, sermons could use improvement Wish audio speakers were better especially for seating at other side of altar. Also question printing so much paper each week for songs. Curious why parish doesn’t have song books. Mostly attentive, spiritually rewarding Good Enjoyable – not sure Low key People do not treat the facility with the appropriate respect. Would like to see missals available to be able to follow along with the readings.Would like to see progress toward building a traditional church instead of a multipurpose social hall. Positive, communalVery noisy We enjoy Fr. Bob’s quick sermons and the message he gives us Pretty good Enjoyable – love Children’s Church and the music Fulfilled Very different – I am having trouble getting used to a dressed down MassMakes me feel happy; very rewarding and spiritualPraying the music would be more uplifting Mass is Mass but it’s not as spirited as we would like, including the delivery of the homilyWould like to see more interaction with communityVery moving Excellent I need to join St. Kateri. Currently at Mt. Carmel but moved ?ComfortingExcellent, very goodEvery priest brings a new season. I enjoy Father Bob’s MassesGood – sound system could use some tuning. Not always able to hear Father clearlyI enjoy the Mass and sermons but can’t always hear FatherAn active participant Slow, boring, but adequate, music needs to be pepped upGood Ok Spiritual I like Fr. Bob’s sermons Meaningful, welcomed Very good Very good I left because of previous priest Comfortable accepting community, audio system sometimes a challenge Very positive Generally enjoy the Mass. Music can use a wider selection of songs. Feel God’s presenceGreat Great community I always enjoy the Mass and especially like Father Bob’s technique at tying the homily to the readings Informative and enjoyable Joy in community sharing praise and love Would appreciate more periods of silence (no music, no singing) esp. after communionWe are pleased with the service. Starts and ends on time. Always with a practical lessonInto myself peaceful Music is in need of better singers – I know of people who left parish because of this and priest reading sermons also only come people spoken to and others are not – not welcoming except for greeters and bulletin people Enlightening, joyful, prayerful, and time to reflect (Cold), enjoy the musicFriendly as family Good Very nice I wish though that I could bring the gifts to the altar, never been selected to do thisGood I find Mass to be respectful, inspiring and pleasant Fulfilling, appreciate thoughtful liturgies Good, relevant to times, homilies are tied to the scripture and its relatedness to our current world I like how Father explains the Gospel and ties in real world examplesPeaceful Joyful and merciful, informative and welcoming Peace, kindness, love, joy Fine Very good Serves my needs Warm and enjoyableMeaningful, warm, acceptingFriendly Informative, religious experience and relaxing Music is good and I find the sermons make me more reflective N/ANot a regularHappy Good Much better after Fr. Charlie’s tenure I enjoy Fr. Bob’s homilies – very friendly group Adequate Noisy Beneficial Very comfortableWe feel connected and involved and uplifted. We feel we are part of the community Better since Fr. Bob has come Good Welcoming, comfortable, enlightening, friendly A friendly community drawn together to worshipGood – choir memberParticipatory, enriching, active Interested, participating, praying Don’t’ know how to answer thisI read the bibleGood Very pleasant. I do which there were more reverent quiet before mass I feel a sense of community at St. Kateri, however, it feels more casual (not a church setting)Enjoyable Peaceful, enlightening Ok Very goodGood Uplifting, joyful, positive. I love the modern music! So upliftingVery good. Especially now with Fr. Bob!! Prayerful, peacefulWonderful Pleasant, feeling part of community. I am not in favor of television in children’s room. Needs a window to feel a part. Cannot hear/speaker systemGreat We love it – we have had several friends join the parish and they love it as well – no judgement – all are welcome Brings me back to my true purposeI have only come 3 times but have been ministered to each timePleasurable Peaceful Comforting, communal, excepting (accepting sp) Good Prayerful – reflective – like Fr. Bob’s simplicity/time with liturgyPositive interaction with priest and community. Uplifting and comfortable Great Uplifting and fuel for the week OKI enjoy participating in the Mass. Altar servers was a nice addition I rarely fall asleep! Honestly, he is more personable than Fr. Charlie (RIP) was. Really good music. And Father Bob is really swell!Meaningful, friendly Very good I enjoy the sense of communityPeaceful We enjoy the traditional MassSharing with others the bread and wine Welcoming Community Very positive Great Nice, but would like Father Bob to speak a little louderUplifting Pleasant/good homilies Mass gives me a personal spiritual centering and experience – I find a lot of people moving around – to rest room i.e. – distracting I’m not a hand holder – it spreads germs and can’t always hear even with hearing aids Learning and community12. Does St. Kateri currently meet your personal/family religious and spiritual expectations?Yes 269No 6Yes/No 3 Comment: My life is difficult at best Yes and No I would like to have a blessing of the pets for our fur familyNo is counseling available? When I asked Fr. Charlie he referred us elsewhere. So-so. There is a lack of reverence in the parish. People talking, drinking, not respecting the body. Ritual has its place in promoting reverence and we have lost much useful ritual. We have looked for other churches because of this.Still lean to Vatican I ~1870Could be better little slow, I go to another church for bible study in the eveningYes, non-members who do contribute Father is very good at dealing with our youngsters and teens Would like to see a large cross above the altar and some statues Good Rel. Ed program With faith formation, giving deeper understanding Reminds me of my college days at a Catholic College, now at university in Olston PAAlthough our needs are met, there is always room for improvement in liturgy, especially musicYes, because offers great opportunities for adult formation and volunteer opportunities. However I think it is missing a more inclusive and welcoming environment for everyoneWould like to say more prayers to Mary, maybe rosary before MassBelieve youth education is fundamental Very welcoming (registered in Sep) reassuring of personal challengesThe youth group were pivotal in my children acceptance when I moved to VA and remain important The mass is pleasant but very different than how I was raised, i.e. kneeling, Altar service, etc. Yes but would like to see more prayer and devotion maybe on feast days, a special night of prayer/adorationIt could be awesome to have Eucharistic Adoration or something else along those linesIt’s not what St. K can do for me it’s what I can do for St. KAfter 50 years I didn’t expect much. I do like the men’s breakfasts Please see back sheet for suggestions. Please consider missals so we can read along with lectors! Please consider printing/including all of the verses of the responsorial psalm! While it is evident that our parish is lively and welcoming parish, it is very difficult to prepare oneself for Mas upon entering the building because of all the chatting and socializing going on…even while the cantor is making announcements. It is very distracting. Why couldn’t the rule be to reverently be quiet before Mass and then chat and socialize afterwards – like most every other Catholic Parish? Yes, I came from a church in a resort area and felt like I was at a fund raiser every Sunday. Being here is so refreshing. Thank you! Fr. Bob has great homilies Yes, but would like to see more group participation, e.g. house church participation has dwindled Fr. Bob’s homilies are excellent Somewhat Mass is Mass but it’s not as spirited as we would like, including the delivery of the homilyI just need to seek more time to use what is available Would like to have the rosary prayed before Mass Yes, need more special events for children Our first time back in 8 yearsCelebrations, homily, religious education all well received Classes are great – atmosphere at Mass not so muchMy daughter enjoys the music relaxed environment, I like the rexxxx at St. Joan’sI am happy to see more classes for adults The reason we moved our membershipMaybe could put the Gospel reading in context with the time period. Explain meaning better My husband is not Catholic but is welcomed Yes, sure wish we had a church. Does Richmond know we are hereReligious education – we came here to satisfy needs that weren’t addressed at other nearly parishes Still in the beginning stages of learning all you have to offer but feeling good so farToo new to determine Yes/no Mass is very good – more daily Mass (like Fri. even Sat. morning) would be SUPER! Good classes for CATHECHISTS – even more participation would be better – Good youth program & CCD classes! But how about a class between Masses for parents and adults. A number of parents stay in between Masses with toddlers – maybe an activity for them, sponsored by the youth group? How about a monthly class in evening/weekend for adults or families teaching xxxxx topics taught by Father (or other) maybe with a potluck? The classes held by Fr. Charlie like this were well attended! Yes, but I’d like to see the parish as a whole reach out more to parishioners in need: financially, emotionally, physicallyYes, church is made easy and less stressful by services for children Yes, I would like some education during the day during week – I’m not sure it is now available Yes, ministry for future religious development is good, but sometimes difficult due to time (offered)13. Does St. Kateri currently meet your personal/family’s formations needs (Religious Education)?Yes 235No 10 Yes/No 1N/A 7Comment:Need more religious ed volunteersYes I think the challenge in confirmation from 2 years to 1 year is a BIG mistake!!! Much richness and service were lost. Yes classes are offered; haven’t participated tho’ No unclear what is open to divorced people No unwelcoming attitude for those who are not original members or who want to promote reverence. NA, no kids in house still and wife is not Catholic Youth program was what brought us to St. K, keep kids involved and through them the parents. Pat Kovak was amazing with Youth Group – program seems to connect less with teens than when she did it. We should examine Do not attend any classes Yes! Thank you! Yes when my children attended Plan to participate in evening adult religion in near futureNon-member at present although offersN/A currently Excellent opportunitiesI attend House Church Classes offered – up to parishioners to take advantage of themRel ed is long maybe a little less time commitment maybe only 2 x a monthThere are many opportunities to enrich my faith N/AWe have a lot of opportunities for formation I am able to join on the Saturday offering. I have committed myself to a Bible Study Class on Monday night Bible Study International RE for teens is good – my kids don’t hesitate to go but the time takes away from family dinner on one of the only nights we have a chance to be together. Why can’t it be right after 11 am mass? No. the adult religious ed is not theologically guided. We feel sort of ‘self or group’ led. Young kids (pre4-5) seems great but I feel like the high school students are lacking quality leadership/direction/community building No teachings of prayers – Rosary etc. Been several years but children benefit from youth education/classes (Pat Kovak era) – hope that continues! Strength of parish N/A – all 3 done I have participated in Bible Stud and adult studies. Just wish they were a little more interesting and we could change up materials.Yes I think more options for young adult formation is needed, aside from the AFF classes. Sometimes it’s more difficult for young adults to feel comfortable in their space for growth with such a large age gap. As for youth getting back to the roots of the Catholic faith and tradition is important. I would prefer more self-studies via technologyVery good JYG program and caring teachers for both younger grades and JYGAFF helps us to grow in many waysExtremely lengthy time commitments for families with multiple children. However the content and groups are fun The RE program has been fabulous and beyond any other parish that we have ever been members of It could but my family is going to different churches My children have and do participate in RE and do so willingly Having recently transferred from another parish, I am impressed by and quite pleased with the RE staffWould like to have JYG and PK-5 RE at the same time to avoid additional tripsYes, but parental/student suggestions for changes shouldn’t be dismissed outright by Coordinator I need to be more active in education. It is my faultHave not looked at it. wish there was a Q&A session to get answers on faith issues Would like an evening women’s group No wish there is more bible study for adults Glad to see you start at Pre-K4 (Last parish didn’t start until kindergarten)N/AI enjoy the Adult Faith Formation Mostly – would like to see more formation in house church N/ADon’t have anyone at this time – grandkids are not baptized No children currently in formation. Other religions have a better youth involvement. Taking away some of the fun things my children loved to do. Seems all business nowSometimes the youth RE activities are a bit excessive N/AMiddle school program is great, my daughter looks forward to attending. Nice mix of fun and educationYes, it is going in this direction more Not applicable No spouse prefers to worship elsewhere It did when my children were youngerWould be nice if youth group wasn’t during dinner timeN/ANot currently attending due to schedules All 3 of my children had wonderful and strong youth involvement N/AWas the best for my son !!) House church! And Mass of courseYouth groupReligious education – we came here to satisfy needs that weren’t addressed at other nearly parishes Not currently utilizing Rel Ed No commit Another reason for our move – we love to attend Mass with our children and grandchildren and feel St. K is more in tune with young families and training children in the faith in an environment where they feel included, to develop pride in their church and develop a life-long devotion to their faith N/A we don’t have any youngsters at home any more who would benefit from Religious Formation Monica has been amazing – I love the other families we learn with – the kids all love each otherI have not attended Religious Ed We don’t take advantage because of time/travel Too new to determine No, my child is a young adult and may go to Mass but is no longer active because she feels unwelcome. She took part in Taco Tuesday but stopNo inflexible schedule, bad experience with youth group leaderYes/no Mass is very good – more daily Mass (like Fri. even Sat. morning) would be SUPER! N/AYes, may need more facilities to meet educational needs14. Is St. Kateri a welcoming community of hospitality?Yes 233 No 9 No Opinion Comment:Most of the timeWe felt welcomed here when we arrived from GermanyDefinitely No we did not see this, in fact, we were put off by some of the original/established members. Yes although having visitors stand is awkward and many don’t do it. Greeters know the regulars, why not just welcome them as they come in?Yes! Yes! Yes!!!Yes see improvements More so if you are involved in ministries or house church Catholic Church needs to be more welcoming to non-Catholic Christian!Love the greetersBut needs more family welcoming things, playground, kids thingsIs a friendly community but I have found it hard to get to really know other families and have a sense of true belongingLike the addition of cookies/fellowship after MassGetting better. The welcome statement after Mass could be better wordedVery Yes, however sometimes the “opening stand and greet” is uncomfortable to single Mass attendeesYes, however I’m not clear on how you get volunteers, same people serve as usher etc. all the time. Recommend making announcements or send out flyer asking for volunteerThere is no outreach. I went to Tabernacle with my in-laws and multiple people came up after the service to welcome us. I have been ignored here for yearsYes, except some youth directorsI don’t feel Catholic Churches in general are good at welcoming new people. The visitors don’t know how to respond during the service From the greeters to Fr. Bob to the parish family – all are made welcome So-so can work on more welcoming and community basedVery welcoming Getting better. Having snacks at 11 am Mass helped keep people around to socializeYes, kind of Absolutely a strength! Enjoy the after church refreshments Ushers, greeters and priest are very nice and pleasant Yes, House Church leaders used to welcome new members with covenant and breviary. Why did we stop? Have had multiple staff members and parish members welcome our family to the parishFor most part. Sometimes, if you don’t have the time to volunteer, I feel a slight negativityI hope so we have been here so long it’s hard to say what new people feel. We try to welcome them. Evident by amount of people who stay after Mass for socializing Sometimes Feel welcomed by allNot previously No, when we first arrived we found the parish to be very insular based on “originals” and not really open to new arrivalsNo, people mostly talk to people they already know Yes I don’t care much for applauding visitors. Instead, ask name, visiting or seeking new parish, then welcome infoYes, like revived xxxxx on cookies added to coffee and drinks to draw community together after MassSo-so greeters are always niceNo except for greeters and bulletin people – cliquish Yes I guess if one was more involved with the church, otherwise , you are left aloneVery welcoming Yes? No? In the beginning a new family would be visited by a member of their house church- after calling of course. If they did not want a visit, they would have our phone number, if they had questions etc.Yes, Debi does a great job!Greeters are very welcomingDefinitely, feel welcome Welcome visitors every Mass Can be hard to form friendships or extend relationships beyond church Yes, comments on visitors during MassPretty welcoming Very much so! It feels as if more people have greeted us in the few weeks we’ve been here than in the 7 years we’ve been at St. JYes, very muchOk but individuals need to reach out to new members But calling out visitors and new families instead of just welcoming them can be embarrassing. Don’t ask them to stand. Yes…but we can always do more! Good that we recognize guests – how about a once a month or quarterly “Invite a Friend” with social/snacks after 11 am Mass?Yes, now has becomeYes, why I come here rather than another church closer to me.Yes, greeters should wear name tags, would help if we had welcoming coffee after Mass to welcome new and bring old together 15. Is St. Kateri a community that reaches outside of its parish to those in need?Yes 233No 2Don’t know 42Check all that apply:MinistryNumberPoor218Homeless137Other Churches88Prison217Ecology38Civic Activities (Scouts, KoC)105People in Other Countries 187Comment:Ecology – Needed more!! I would like to see more active KoC program. Sometimes the myriad ministries seem to be too big to manage. Unsure of relationship with scouts. Is there more we could do for local homeless? The Haiti Ministry is one of the best things about this church We could do more, sponsor scout religious knot program. Regular rotation at soup kitchenPrison cookies From when present, this is what I know of (she checked Yes, then Prison and People in other countries) So-so, I could write a bookI feel we help a lot of people in the community with the thrift store and food pantryYes, PORT There is not a lot of actual involvement, but financially. I know there is an ecology committee but have not seen much done actuallyWe are involved but it may not be noticed publically I would like to see more ecumenical activities Would love to see the youth be given opportunities to meet youth from other parishesHaiti Thrift store is great…but there isn’t a clear visible connection to the storeYes but don’t know how far and frequent , not sure how often, frequent, whoI think we do a wonderful job with thisHaiti Could do more community events to draw others in. heard from people at Run for the Sun. More service events – ways to helpDon’t know – seems that it does but haven’t been here long enough to answer honestly)Also through Catholic HeartAll of these exist but often it’s all done by a few – our impression is that many of these have been in the parish a long time and new people are not participating as muchGreat job Not sure how present we are in other countries which is important to me Don’t see much for the homeless or other parishes Yes Civic activities loss of scout pack was unfortunate loos like beginnings of KofC is promising No, except long distance Soup kitchen The Haiti ministry is a great thingWeWe’ve volunteered at the parish food bankI would like to see ore interaction with our neighbor churches. Tell us if we participate with the above ??? (?? Were homeless, other churches, ecology, civic activities)I feel that we are very active community Would be great to hear more about what the thrift shop does and also to do more in collaboration with other churches of other faiths Dinner for needy? It should work with the poor and homeless My husband is a KofC, we’ll need information when we joinI love that you have a thrift shop for the less fortunate We support St. Vincent’s as well as St. Luke’s (Episcopal) in downtown NN; the Haiti ministry is wonderful! As is our involvement with the Federal Prison KAIROS Ecumenical ministry. How about a Catholic ministry in downtown NN Jail?Any thought to a meal training ministry for those going through surgery, birth, or death in the family? 16. Is St. Kateri a diverse parish?Yes 177 No 72 ? 1 Comment: No not really but I believe this church is representative of Catholics in America No not by choice – just the demographic of area No? perhaps yes considering our communityNo but it reflects its community which is not diverse eitherDiversity – term of parties OR diversity – team of parties (couldn’t decipher any better)No. Very white. Very affluent. Very heterosexual. Why? Somewhat, not very diverseNo, not very No not really Sort of No. There is not much diversity in the local area, so not the parish’s fault…It’s as diverse as the population of the county Yes socioeconomics yes Yes mostly white community but everyone is welcome Yes, but not as much as I thought it would beNo, probably due to geography/demographicsI think we try but we could improve Depends on how broadly you define the term , age and gender yes, ethnically very smallDon’t know More diverse than some less than others Slightly Not really Getting more so – all are welcome The parish is mostly white community nothing is offered in Spanish or other languages We are not located in a very diverse neighborhoodI see mostly white No, our population is pretty much from York/Poquoson Yes, for CatholicNo, not something that can be changed, it’s just the area we live inDoesn’t “look” like it but there is no evidence of non-inclusion – intentionally No, very few minoritiesYes, growing in diversitySomewhat More and more with different ages and culture No York county isn’t diverseYes, not as diverse as other local parishesYes, per the local communityNo, mostly affluent and whiteNo Poquoson /upper middle class seems to be the heart of the parish On casual appearances doesn’t seem so, but I’m not familiar with parish enough to judge if diversity of throughout parish Reflects the demographics of the regionIt is diverse for the location Could be expandedNo we could be more diverse Not particularly but somewhat. This can’t really be forced, can it?N/ANo not enoughNot really Depends on definition of diversity, age and family demogr yes No, looking around I don’t see much diversity No depends on how this defined. Not welcoming to Hispanics for example I see more diversity every yearNo much I find this to be a function of the community and not the fault of the parish Yes, need an American flag Yes and no, our area has more expensive housing: not as diverse as other areasIt reflects the communities of Poquoson and York county which isn’t really diverseNot sure Product of neighborhood Not enormously but we feel all are encouragedYes, barelySomewhat yesNo we have a few minorities. The disabled are not very visibleYes, but not muchNot veryThough predominately Caucasian all are welcome and some diversity is evident Yes, I see some diverse people every MassYes, for the areaBecoming so No just look around – but we are pretty reflective of Tabb – sing a few spirituals or a Spanish song monthly. And hazarding a guess, we are overwhelmingly white, and, consequently, Republican, i.e. York County VAYes, recently Fairly for this areaNo, doesn’t appear diverse Yes, still some work in getting more attendees, participation 17. Additional Comments:Would like to see a better backdrop to Sunday Mass altar. The drapes are not very welcoming. The parish needs a full time, young, paid youth minister. This sets the foundation for parish growth and pulls people into life-long mission and participationIn looking at expenditures – could save on electricity by only using A/C or heat in offices being used only when entire church is not in session. May need a zoned A/C system but would pay itself off in the long run Would very much like to be involved in planning process as a volunteer. Considerable planning experience. We have an adult son living with us. Every other week-end has children come 2 boys (5, 14 years old) and 1 girl (15 years old). Would like to see playing games for senior citizens like bridge, mahjong, book club.Get kneelers so those who want to use them can to display the reverent attitude they would like to have. Encourage quiet before Mass starts so those who want to better prepare themselves can. We now have altar servers (Great!), let’s promote this with robes, etc. I travel a lot so do not always make it to Mass here, though we still contribute regularly. I know the church is the people, rather than the structure, but I feel closer spiritually in a nice building. The poor villages in Europe all have dedicated worship places. I see our church evolving as we have been here and I like that. We would like to see the Altar Servers wearing robes and sitting next to the Priest on the altar. My sons both had this opportunity growing up and made them feel more a part of the Mass. Add the prayer responses to the weekly handout with the songs. It took 50 years to learn the old ones and I still say them wrong. Responses out of habit. At Easter I would like to include the Litany of the Saints to the Easter VigilYoung teenagers have no opportunity to be involved and the youth group made our teens feel like Sunday night was a burden. Shift the focus so they are invested in the Mass. Why not have a teen Mass where they are the readers, cantors, etc.? Teens 13-16 can do so little. The pastor and his humor and short homilies are appreciated. Can we build a “proper” sanctuary space that lends itself to a bit more reverence and tradition? We love Fr. Bob! Our family attempted to join the parish years ago upon our move. The office lady “Elaine or Debbie” can’t recall, did not make it an easy task. We had quite small children and could not make it in for the interviews of “acceptance”. I did not find this very Christian-like or welcoming. We decided to inquire at other churches. I/we love this church but it was not welcoming at all until recently with the change of priest. Although I/we do not know if this “interview” policy still remains. We reflected on the questions provided last week – we are disappointed that they are not here to answer. One of the things to enhance the prayer of the mass is music. The music should enhance the worship/prayer and not be a performance. Music that the community is not familiar with or cannot sing does little to enhance worship. It would be better and less distracting to do without. The acoustics of the church is not the best. If you sit in the back on the sides it is very hard to hear. I love the books and CDs. The family room is great. Strengths: Youth Program, Social Justice Programs, Welcoming/flexible Weaknesses: we could use books instead of printing some sheets to be more environmentally conscious We would like to see the importance of the blessing of the body and Christ be more celebrate; bell ringing, etc. Also the choir needs to sing songs everyone can sing. The choir itself should be moved the MAIN focus should be the altar. I would love to see a donation base fundraiser for foam kneeling pads for this parish. I have heard people in this parish never knowing that kneeling/showing reverence is a part of Mass. Also standing after receiving the Eucharist and not sitting until the Eucharist is in the Tabernacle. Please take into consideration the kneeling pads. In general, become more traditional. Suggest having parents get baked goods after Mass for their children to avoid chaos of kids running to cookies and taking a handful for touching them and putting them back. Also this would encourage adults to socialize and not heading to parking lot sending kids to get their snack I think we need more local outreach, we help a lot of causes outside our area, but not enough insideHave you ever had a book club? I am only here ? year June through Nov We also would like to say that the expectations that anyone could give thoughtful and complete answers to this survey in 13 minutes and then switch off and immerse oneself in eth Eucharist is ridiculous. I’d like to use a more polite word, but, well, we only had 13 minutesNeed to shut down the drinks on the kitchen bar before Mass. Adults and children should not be drinking or eating before Mass. It’s not Taco BellI note the budget shortage. If 200 families each gave an extra $2.00 each week for 52 weeks, we would have $20,800. Hope I did that correctly!23. Just work on the basic MassStop the wine service from one glass, just stop the wine 24. I am new to this church and would love to see something for my age 56, divorced, single. There was only things (activities) at St. Joan of Arc for everything but single divorced middle age people. No need to call, but if necessary Ann Hirst, 520-333-936825.
