GADSDEN CITY BOARD OF EDUCATION REGULAR MEETING

Recognition

The Gadsden City Board of Education met in regular session on Tuesday, October 6, 2015 at 5:00 P.M. at Eura Brown Elementary School. Mrs. Kelly Cochran called the meeting to order and Mr. Larry Weathers opened the meeting with prayer followed by the Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag.

President Cochran recognized Titan Ambassadors Bailey Cook, Ethan Janns, and Sydney Williams, who assisted at the meeting and thanked them for their service. Mrs. Cochran and Superintendent Miller also recognized and welcomed Quality of Life representative Karen Parker, Mr. Chad Hare of the Gadsden Water Works, and Water Board members, Mr. Ben Reed and Ms. Denescia Getaw. Mrs. Cochran also introduced Mrs. Priscilla Yother, Principal of Eura Brown Elementary, who welcomed everyone to the meeting and thanked the Board for serving the students of Gadsden City Schools.

Mr. Chad Hare, assisted by Mr. Reed and Ms. Getaw made the presentation of iPads to students and Principal Kristen Woods of Walnut Park Elementary and to students, teacher, and Principal Delsia Malone of Striplin Elementary. The purchase of twenty iPads each for Walnut Park and Striplin Elementary was made possible through the Gadsden Water Works customers' monthly twenty-five cent donations for Gadsden City Schools. Mr. Hare noted that there are no administrative costs taken from these donations and that 100% of the donations goes toward technology purchases for Gadsden City Schools.

Reports

Mrs. Rhonda Perry gave a brief report on the ACT Aspire test scores for the Gadsden City School System. The test was given to third through eighth grade students. The overall Aspire grade level scores in math improved with the exception of the eighth grade. The overall scores in the math test were 38% proficiency for 2014-2015 compared to 31% for 2013-2014, and the national percentage being 41% proficiency.

The overall percentage in reading proficiency for grades three ? eight was 32% for the 2014-2015 school year and 33% for the 2013-2014 school year with the national average being 38%.

The average ACT scores by school and state comparison are as follow: The 2015 scores for English were 17.2 for 2015 and 2014 for GCHS students compared to the state average of 17.6. The science average for GCHS students for 2015 was 18.2 and 17.9 for 2014. The state

average in science was 18.3. For math, the GCHS students' average score was 17.4 for 2015 and

17.7 for

2014. The state average in math was 17.8. For reading, GCHS students averaged 18.4 for 2015 as compared for 18.3 for 2014. The state average was 18.8. The composite averages were 18.3 for the state and GCHS students scored 17.9 for 2015 and 17.9 for 2014 as well.

Superintendent Miller presented the new maintenance and technology salary schedule to the Board for review.

The third annual Pillars of Education recognition for Mrs. La Gray, Senior Juvenile Probation Officer of Etowah County and Mrs. Joanne Hightower, Executive Director of United Way will take place at the Gadsden City High School vs. Buckhorn High football game on Friday, October 23, 2015, at the GCHS Titan Stadium.

The Anti-bullying Rally is scheduled for October 7, at 5:30 P.M. at Gadsden City High School. Mr. Ramirez will be the featured speaker. The Rotary Club secured the speaker for the event.

Information Items

A reception was held recently for the seven Merit Scholar semi-finalists and the AP scholars of Gadsden City High School.

The transition program grant at Litchfield Middle School will continue for the remainder of the school year. Mr. Chip Rowan conducts the transition program at Litchfield Middle School and does a wonderful job with the students.
