FOCUS ON THE FUTURE

While it is obvious that new campus construction will be a major focus in

Galena Park ISD this coming school year, the district remains true to its

mission of preparing students to be productive citizens and lifelong learners.

Te challenges faced in the district are not limited to any one grade level,

and employees are charged with enriching students academically from early

childhood to graduation. With a clear focus on this purpose, Galena Park

ISD is excited about the new strategies and programs being implemented

this year to fulfll the needs of all students no matter where they are on their

educational journey.

Te pre-school years are an important phase of student learning, so Galena Park ISD is enhancing the Early

Childhood Program experience. A Family Engagement Plan, specifcally targeting Pre-Kindergarten students, has

been developed. Families of the youngest students can look forward to Parenting Education classes, district-wide

and campus Family Literacy events, Math and Science Nights, as well as numerous parent volunteer opportunities.

In an efort to reach more young learners in the community, two GPISD elementary campuses are hosting

Pre-Kindergarten programs for three-year-old students this year. Te Galena Park ISD Early Childhood Program

will also utilize a network of community resources, including community agencies and faith-based organizations.

Another area of emphasis for the District relates to those students who seek

opportunities outside a traditional college education. Te Galena Park ISD Career

and Technical Early College High School (CTE ECHS) will be adding their third

freshmen class this year bringing their total enrollment to 375 students. Tis school

was started three years ago, in partnership with San Jacinto College, based on

the stark reality that college is expensive, and many students choose to work and

contribute to their family rather than attend a traditional four-year university. Te

mission of CTE ECHS is for each student to be employable by the age of 18. Students

at CTE ECHS participate in 12 highly competitive programs, which prepare students

for attractive jobs with opportunities for advancement. Many of the inaugural 125

students, now juniors, are on track to graduate in 2019 with a high school diploma and a Certifcate of Technology

or Associates of Applied Science degree in their chosen feld.

GPISD SCHOOL BOARD HONORED

Galena Park Independent School District is proud to announce our 2016-2017 school board has been chosen by the

service that has made a positive impact on Texas public school students.

Te Galena Park ISD Board of Trustees are Jef Miller, Wanda Heath

Johnson, Minnie Rivera, Dawn Fisher, Wilfred J. Broussard, Jr.,

A Letter From the

GPISD Superintendent of Schools

Dear GPISD Parents and Guardians,

As we look ahead to the

2017-2018 school year, I want

to first take a moment to again

express my sincere appreciation

for the outstanding community

support exhibited for our

students and those charged

with impacting their lives and

the quality of life in Galena Park

ISD.

Through our Bond 2016

Program, we are ensuring a

bright future for our district in general and our students and

teachers in particular. As you travel throughout our school

community, the rebuilding of three elementary schools is

apparent. Galena Park Elementary, North Shore Elementary

and Woodland Acres Elementary are all underway and are

scheduled to open in the fall of 2018. The North Shore Senior

High 10th Grade Center is already under construction and is also

set to open in the fall of 2018. District, campus and community

members are busy planning and designing the next phase of

bond construction which will include the rebuilding of Jacinto

City Elementary, Pyburn Elementary and Cloverleaf Elementary.

Renovations to Galena Park High School, as well as many other

facilities, are also part of the next chapter of the Bond 2016

Program. Thanks to your support, GPISD will continue to provide

the best education possible for our students through top-rate

facilities.

While construction will be a large focus for the District this

year, we remain committed to our mission of preparing students

to be productive citizens and lifelong learners. Please be

reminded how important it is for students to have all the tools

necessary to succeed in life. Help us encourage our students

to not only serve their community but to appreciate those who

serve them. We believe one of the best gifts a young person

could ever receive is an appreciation for the many blessings

life affords them. Our purpose in Galena Park ISD is to provide

one of those blessings - an outstanding education. Thanks again

for the tremendous role you play as we pursue ¡°Excellence in

All, for All, by All¡±!

Sincerely,

Dr. Angi Williams

and express their creativity.

Her goal is for each student

to become inspired!

Gutierrez-Salazar is an

active member of the

parent involvement

committee, and she ofers

Te GPISD Rookies of the Year are Elissa Adams and Bryan Vasquez.

Adams pushes the message of empowerment and courage to her students

every day, so they realize there is more out there than the bubble

they live in. She wants

them to realize there is an

entire world waiting for

them, but it must begin

with education.

Vasquez created the

Gentleman¡¯s Club at WAES

to help encourage and

motivate young men to

build good character and

fortitude. His hope is to

inspire the next generation

to be responsible citizens.

Character

Education

Although it is important students receive a good education in academics,

it is equally essential that character education be addressed as well. Martin

Luther King, Jr. said, ¡°Te function of education is to teach one to think

intensively and to think critically. Intelligence plus character - that is the

goal of true education.¡± True education is what students in Galena Park ISD

receive.

Each month, a character trait is presented to the students of GPISD.

Te school faculty exemplifes the monthly trait while teachers integrate

character education into lessons as ofen as possible. Students should focus

on the monthly trait in their school and home life. Te character traits our

students and faculty will focus on this year are:

August/September

October

Citizenship

Compassion & Tolerance

November

Fairness

December

Honesty & Integrity

January

Perseverance

February

March
