2015 NEWSLETTER: WEEK 12: JULY 4

Race for title begins in earnest

WITH the onset of the season’s second-half, the race for the ECB Premier League title begins in earnest.

Only 45 points separate the top five clubs with Toft currently on 245, followed by Chester Boughton Hall 225, Alderley Edge 218 then Hyde and Nantwich both on 200

Toft made it four wins in five games when they despatched the erratic Bowdon by seven wickets at Booth’s Park. Bowdon will have to perform markedly better when they visit Sheffield Collegiate in the last 16 of the National knock out next Sunday. Not until their number seven batsman Mark Leathley (a fine 54) entered did they put bat to ball faced with stifling field-placings and canny bowling, notably from he-who-never tires Jimmy Lomas, with 5-48 as the innings closed on 142. Toft had the match won in 24 overs thanks to powerful hitting from Lancashire’s Rob Jones (52) happily recovered from a fearful blow to the head received in the Cheshire Cup at Elworth the previous Sunday which hospitalised him.

Chester kept up the squeeze with a comfortable five wickets win at an all-male Bramhall whom they bowled out for 127, Matt Hughes 41, Warren Goodwin 3-13, Jack Williams 3-37. Chester countered with 139-5 after being 40-4, Lee Dixon 47 not out. The return Toft v CBH game, incidentally, is not until September 5.

Alderley Edge cantered home by nine wickets at Cheadle, ending their hosts’ two-match winning burst and sending them back to the foot of the table. After bowling Cheadle out for 111, Tom Forman and Charlie Reid both 3-27, Alan Day contributed a fine 64 to a response of 114-1.

Hyde outplayed Nantwich to win by a similar margin at Werneth Low, restricting their visitors to 171-9, Abhishek Raut 53, with Jason Whittaker producing the day’s best bowling figures of 6-76. Openers Danny Berry, 84 not out and Dave Fitzsimmons, 79 put on 156, the champions’ reply of 174-1 taking them only 40 overs.

Grappenhall moved off bottom place by beating Marple at Broad Lane, only their second 25-pointer of the season. A magnificent innings of 109 containing 20 fours by Andrew Hall helped Marple reach a respectable 208, Alex Matthews 4-37, Sam Guest 4-85. Grappenhall responded with 213-4, James McCoy 95 and Richard Green 76 enjoying a match-defining 105 stand.

Macclesfield and Neston played out the day’s only draw (points: 15 – 5), Macc reaching 255-8, Rob Porter 77, S. Mugava again bowling unchanged for 27 overs for his 5-127. Neston held out at 171-9, skipper Brad Donelan’s dogged 48 not out shutting up one end, notably against the pace of Ian Tate 4-38.

Sale lead Division 1

SALE replaced Timperley at the top of Division One with a 60-runs win at Didsbury, who have suffered a major loss with an injury to key all-rounder Simon Normanton.

Tyrone Lawrence contributed 107 and Ron Rickelton 63 in a 131 stand which took Sale to 246-6, M. Grace 5-72. Didsbury were all out for 186 in reply, T. Hughes 56, Rick Halkon 3-39.

Timperley lost to Urmston off the last ball of a magnificent game at Stockport road after posting 226-6, Dave Carroll 98, Asif Iqbal 82 in a 158 stand for the second wicket. Urmston countered with 228-9, their winning runs coming with four byes then a flicked six off the final delivery by teenage number 11 Hassan. Earlier, Calum Turner had scored 55 and Brad Yates 46

Davenham beat Weaverham by six runs in a thrilling mid-Cheshire derby after posting 203-6, Sam Hunt 80. Weaverham were all out for 197 after being 119-9, tail ender Kevin Douglas 48 not out and skipper Ian Eaton, 35, taking them near.

Middlewich stay bottom despite winning for the first time since April 25, by 36 runs at home to Cheadle Hulme. ‘Wich totalled 186-7 (A Davies 73) and Cheadle Hulme were bowled out for 150, Steve Bliss’ left arm spin earning him 7-42

Oulton Park fell just short in a tight game at Christleton where the home side posted 249-7, Matt Astbury 75, Ben Patterson 66. Park got to 245-9, former Christleton star man Iro De Silva 95, Zaigham Abbas 4-73.

Oxton emerged with a creditable 12-6 draw at home to Tattenhall after posting 199-7, Marc Debrabender 68. Tattenhall replied with 142-8, Dan Power 47, Majesh Rajaratne 5-30.

Mobberley up to second in Division 2

PROMOTED Mobberley rose to second place in Division Two when they maintained their winning run by hammering Widnes at Church Lane..

Former Lancashire starlet Nathan Wood top-scored with 53 and Mark Goodstadt 51 in Mobberley’s tally of 210, Danny Moore 4-54. Widnes were all bowled out for 123 by Abdul Aqeel’ 6-46 (Chris Kirby 49) before dashing back home for the club’s 150th Anniversary Ball.

Warrington lead by 18 points after registering their ninth win, by three wickets at Congleton where they were set to chase 180 (Paul Beaumont 44, Andy Scholes 4-37). They did so with plenty to spare at 183-7, the dependable Will Fleetwood 73.

Bollington not only lost their second game in succession, they were trounced at Northwich by six wickets after a rare batting flop to 110 all out against Chamindu Ishanka, 5-26. Young batting star Sam Stoneley hit 41 off 15 balls as Northwich replied with 112-4 in just 17 overs.

Improving Upton - up to fourth spot - beat declining Brooklands by four wickets in the Wirral, restricting their visitors to 173-6, then replying with 177-6, Chris Stowell-Smith 63.

Bredbury St. Mark’s made it two wins in three games with a home success against Irby, who are becoming marooned in bottom spot. Irby totalled 142, Chris McGinn 56, Graham Barlow 5-23 and Bredbury responded with 143-8, Chris Nuttall 52 hot out, Mark Newman 4-50.

Stockport won by three wickets in a low scoring game at Alvanley who totalled a meagre 115, Mike Eley 5-30, Adam Porter 4-15. Stockport responded with 119-7.

JENNY, NOT EMMA, WAS FIRST PREMIERSHIP FEMALE

BRAMHALL’s Emma Lamb was not the first woman to appear in the ECB Premier League, as stated in last week’s Newsletter following her innings of 30 against Neston.

A closer inspection of MTB’s record books - after prompting by Cheshire Women’s Cricket PR Martin Saxon - shows that distinction going to Jenny Halstead (now Jenny Dunn), then aged 18, who played three times for Poynton in 2005, scoring eight on her debut at Chester Boughton Hall on Saturday, June 25. Coincidentally, Poynton finished 11th and were relegated - alongside Chester - that season.

As a matter of record, other women who have figured in 1st XI cricket for County League clubs, although not in the Premiership, are Victoria Latham (Tattenhall, Division 2, 2005); Hannah Jones (Didsbury, Joseph Holt T20, 2015); Ellie Mason (Bramhall, National ko, 2015); Sarah McCann (Poynton, Cheshire Cup, 2006).

Most have gone on to play for Cheshire and Lancashire.

Macclesfield became the first team to top 200 runs when they hit 222-4 in a heavy defeat of Offerton in the South East Division, but have little chance of overhauling leaders Poynton Legends, who beat Bollington Vets by seven wickets.

Timperley stage great show for 1,000 fans

A CROWD in the region of 1,000 ignored the nearby T20 Roses match to watch England stars of yesteryear given a rousing game by the League First Division leaders, at Stockport road on Friday.

Under the inspiring chairmanship of Adam Horan, Timperley again showed they can put on shows like few others in the League and the match brought joy to many young would-be cricketers setting eyes on England stars of not-so-long-ago for the first time. The event also involved many generous sponsors who, together with the gate money, helped the club make a healthy profit on the day for their future development. “That has to be to get into the Premier League, to go on attracting good players and continue improving our facilities although we are having to defer until August next year plans to re- surface the main ground”, said Adam who was helped on the day by a large team of well-trained volunteers

Every one of the Masters was a former England Test player, those to take the eye being ex-Notts left-hander Uzman Afzaal with a fine 72, ex-Surrey skipper and current Ashes batting coach Mark Ramprakash, 47 and injured Durham paceman Graham Onions, still being touted for a Test return.

Timperley also had a stand out player in recent recruit Asif Iqbal, who hit a classy, unbeaten 91, then took 2-25 as the hosts’ 13-man squad went down by a gallant 30 runs. Scorecard:

Alderley Edge openers Calum Rowe and Alan Day were out for four and nought respectively, then Rick Moore went for 28, Khalid Sawas for a single and Lee Dixon for a counter-attacking 47. Not out when torrential rain flooded the ground at 2.30 p .m. were James Drummond (30) and debutant Ryan Brown, nine.

Latest Umpires Quiz: by Alistair Davies

LAST WEEK: AN injured striker has a runner; having played a fair delivery, the injured striker sets off for a run and makes good his ground at the bowler’s end, where he remains. The runner and non-striker meanwhile go on to complete three runs when the wicket at the striker’s end is fairly put down. What action should be taken by the umpires?

ANSWER: The injured striker is run out when the wicket at the wicket-keeper’s end is broken. No runs are scored no matter how many have been completed by the non-striker and runner. Law 38.4

THIS WEEK: A wide ball is called. The ball is then deflected by the wicket-keeper onto a fielder’s helmet placed on the ground within the field of play. In the meantime, the batsmen have attempted a run but had not crossed when the ball hit the helmet. They subsequently complete the run. Now then, quiz fans, what would YOU expect the outcome to be?

STOP PRESS: Umpire James Emmerson comes up with the following interesting report from Christleton v Oulton Park in Division One on Saturday: “It was one of those games: Off the first ball Christleton’s non-striker was run out and from the second the bowler was hit for six, the ball lodging in a thick hedge and couldn’t be found. We had to agree to a second new ball being used. Christleton scored 249-7 and Oulton were 213-3 before a collapse and at 245-9 their number 11 survived a huge appeal for lbw. The game was played in a terrific spirit and congratulations are due to both teams”.
