GCSE Mathematics (9–1) trial:

free support materials

Introduction

Towards the end of 2015, we conducted a large-scale trial for the new GCSE Mathematics

(9–1) specification. The trial involved 25 centres and some 3,000 students, who sat papers from Specimen papers set 1.

After the trial was concluded, we spoke to teachers from the participating centres, and on the basis of their useful feedback, we have created four strands of free support materials to help address the issues they raised. The four strands of support are:

1. Exemplars

A selection of student answers from 22 questions that featured in the trial, with examiner comments on the student responses.

2. Tiering guidance

Guidance on choosing tier of entry for your students, along with common question papers, comprising questions appearing in both tiers in the New SAMs and two sets of specimen papers.

3. Assessing problem solving

Support in understanding the new AO3 problem-solving requirements, comprising an introduction with information on problem-solving strategies, more gold–silver–bronze scaffolded practice papers, examples of new AO3 strands and elements, problem-solving strategy posters,* model answers from the New SAMs and a selection of Practice Book chapters, and Exam Wizard tests on the new AO3 strands and elements.

4. Assessing mathematical reasoning

Support in understanding the new AO2 mathematical reasoning requirements, comprising an introduction, examples of new AO2 strands and elements, and Exam Wizard tests on the new AO2 strands and elements.

The free trial support fits into the wider free support materials that we have created to help teachers deliver the new GCSE Mathematics (9–1) specification. You will find all these materials on the Emporium and on the GCSE Mathematics (9–1) Teacher support pages on the Edexcel website, where they have been divided into the four strands of Plan, Teach, Assess and Develop.

You will also find the New SAMs and two sets of specimen papers on Exam Wizard, our free bank of past papers and questions that you can use to build your own mock exams and tests.

We hope you find these resources useful. Any feedback on them will be gratefully received, along with any ideas for further free support that we can assemble.

* The problem-solving posters have been developed from materials produced by

Alan Easterbrook for Yorkshire Ridings Maths Hub.
