ABE – First Meeting

This is an example of an ABE tutoring session in 3 parts from Delaware County Literacy Council. Included in Part 1 is an example of goal setting, sight words, core curriculum, word pronunciation and writing. Part 2 continues writing, includes Language Experience Approach and functional learning. Part 3 includes discussions about everyday life skills.

“Basic Reading and Writing Techniques” is a series in 3 parts for a basic ABE learner by Literacy DuPage, IL. Part 1: Alphabet Study includes reviewing the previous lesson, new words and rhyming words, writing the words and finding sounds in an experience story. Part 2: Word Study shows an example of reading an experience story silently, discussing unknown words, reading the story aloud, adding to the story and spell tracing.

ELL – First Meeting

The “First Meeting” series is by Literacy DuPage and includes videos for ELL 1 and 2. The ESL 1 meeting includes getting acquainted, goal setting, a quick check of words and numbers, a quick check of reading and writing and a review of next meeting and homework. Part 1 of the ESL 2 First Meeting includes getting acquainted, goal setting, attempts at writing and phone numbers. Part 2 includes more attempts at writing and some discussion about homework.

Delaware County Literacy Council also has a 2 part video series on the ELL first meeting. Part 1 also includes a discussion about the days of the week, setting and achieving goals, finding resources, assessment and alphabet, spelling, greetings and the verb - to be. Part 2 includes work on contractions, reading forms, days of the week and months of the year.

ELL – Speaking Strategies

This series of 2 videos is by Literacy DuPage. Part 1 shows how to make picture cards using the pictures in the newspaper and how to review them. Part 2 reviews discussions about quantities and finishes the lesson.

ELL – Reading and Writing Strategies

Literacy DuPage provides a number of videos with reading and writing strategies to use with ELL. The “Family Photos” is an example of using pictures with a low level ELL as well as the use of a sight word strategy. The “ESL 1” video goes through the Learning Experience Approach including the writing of the story, the tutor reading the story and the learner reading the story. In the “ESL 2”, the learner reads the homework assignment, learns to self-correct and prepare for the next lesson. “Using an Address” is condensed from a 45 min. tutoring session and includes reviewing the address, saying the address, practice writing, practice writing without looking, practicing city and state, an example of encouragement and success, filling out address cards and discussion of the next session. “Alphabet Study” is for beginning ELL and shows the practice of letter names and the practice of letter sounds.

If you copy and paste the URL of the YouTube video into step 1 and select “avi” as the format to convert to in step 2 and follow the directions, it will upload and convert the video and send you an e-mail for the location to download the video. You tell it where to save your video and you are done.
