It’s a charity giving back to the places most in need where gems come from! Meet a few of the students from the Arusha Gemmological & Jewelry Training Centre! Since 2000, Mr. Peter Salla has been training students in gemology, gem sorting and grading, and faceting. For most of the 800 students who have attended the Arusha school, it has been a second chance and an opportunity for a new career. We love Mr. Salla’s heart for his students and how he pushes each of them to succeed! He is equipping for employment and industry - the promise of a bright future! You can learn more about it at gem-faceting-training.Theme: Mwatate Children’s HomePicture: kids of MwatateOne of the sweetest initiatives of our new charity partner, Gem Legacy: The Mwatate Children’s Home! It has been a safe haven for children from the surrounding area for a few decades. Currently, they are housing over 30 children, age 5-18. The children are all orphans, do not have a home or family to live with for various reasons, or do not feel safe in their home. At the Mwatate Centre, they have secure surroundings, 3 meals per day, camraderie with friends, and activities and sports. Mwatate is set in the most mineral rich region of Kenya and much of the school’s funding comes from local mines who are thriving!Theme: Kitarini Primary School, New PartnershipPicture: students of the Kitarini Primary SchoolWe’re introducing you to more initiatives from our new jewelry charity partner, Gem Legacy! For the past 8 years, visiting the Kitarini Primary School has been a favorite day of every visit to Africa for Gem Legacy’s founder, @rogerdery. Kitarini Primary School provides education for over 600 children of local Maasai Ruby miners. We are always inspired by their BIG ?, eager ?, and curious ?. Contributing to the Kitarini Primary School will make teacher housing, teaching resources, and toys and games accessible. The Maasai tribe is almost universally a nomadic tribe which means their children do not attend school. In modern day Africa, education is essential and the presence of Ruby mining means these children are attending school!Theme: Equipment and Tools, New PartnershipPicture: miners or mining equipmentGem Legacy, our new jewelry charity partner, supports the least common denominator, like this Aquamarine mine in Malawi that began working just this year. These farmers are miners between farming seasons and we stand by them all year long. Some ask why Gem Legacy doesn’t support mines by purchasing a backhoe or other machinery. Our goal is to support employment that fuels the greatest number of families. Backhoes put men out of work and, once they have a broken part, it’s not as easy to fix as we’re used to. We LOVE seeing farmers being able to work in the offseason for farming and LOVING what they’re doing!Theme: Communities and Families, New PartnershipPicture: miners, families, townsGem Legacy’s mission is to follow miners and their communities and come alongside them, meet them at their mine, and ask “how can we support you?” We believe in the power of long-term partnership to make lasting changes that impacts lives for eternity. Gem Legacy has seen the real-life, tangible impact of gemstones. Families will testify that the bounty and abundance in their life is because of gemstone mining or their parents mining gemstones. We’re making sure this exponentially positive impact of gemstones is universally true in East Africa. The Precious Women, comprised of an entirely female and largely widowed group, are mining for Tsavorite Garnet with a compressor Gem Legacy delivered to the mine in February 2019 to make the use of power tools possible, instead of mining by hand with farming tools. They are working against all odds and they love every minute of it. We love supporting them!Theme: Gemological Training, New PartnershipPicture: gemological trainingMost of Gem Legacy’s gemological training occurs in Malawi and Kenya, where gemological knowledge and practical techniques for identifying gem rough is sorely needed. Gem Legacy’s goal is to give locals the basic training needed for them to be successful in the gem industry. There are not places available for miners and dealers to obtain this knowledge so we are passionate about training local miners in gem identification, evaluation, and pricing. Because they learn English in school and don’t have a way to continue practicing at home. Now, all 28 kids of the Mwatate Children’s Home can read for fun and increase their proficiency in English! Learning English in Kenya is essential for future success in business. Many of the kids do not have their school fees covered for this fall. Would you help us send them back to school? The Maasai tribe is traditionally nomadic, which means their children do not regularly attend school. Their semi-permanent residence in the Longido area has given their children the opportunity to receive education. The Kitarini school has now flooded to 612 Maasai children and Gem Legacy is delighted to invest in the school that gems have built over the past decade.Picture: students of KitariniThe Kitarini kids have big smiles, eager minds, curious hearts. They are almost all the children of local Ruby miners in the northern region of Tanzania. The presence of Ruby mining means that children aren’t needed at home and can attend school year-round! Southern Kenya is home to Tsavorite Garnet and Gem Legacy has seen firsthand the remarkable power of gems to affect lives, evidenced in the progress and changes in Southern Kenya in the last decades. Many mines find Tsavorite Garnet in its lighter form called Grossular Garnet. It is still highly valued and miners take it as a sign they are following the right “vein” in the rock to lead them to Tsavorite Garnet.
