Early On Balanced Calendar – ISD status (survey of TAs on 1/18/16)“Most are between 189 and 200 days.” - JeanKent County - all of the LEAs (Grand Rapids Public – 190 days)OttawaSt. JosephVan BurenNewaygoAlleganHillsdaleGeneseeLapeer (187 days)Muskegon - some LEAsOakland – some LEAs Eastern UP (probably)West Shore next grant year. ?Berrien - Craig was working on this prior to his move, not sure what the current status is. ?West Shore will have some unhappy people when they go to adjusted calendar year. ?They have paid the staff an extra contract, and the staff made lots of extra money. ?This will go away. ?Oakland and Lapeer info is from their EO CoordinatorsOakland: Every district has at least some days scheduled in the summer.? It may be just a swap of 10 summer days for 10 fall days – but everyone sees kids throughout the summer months.? What we discovered is it’s really hard to do when staff are also working with children over 3 because they end up working full time for the majority of the year, but then part time when early intervention is off – and then part time when preschool is off.? That takes away a lot of the incentive of working in the summer months.? We’ve encouraged districts to think about dedicated early intervention teams when it makes sense so staff don’t have to juggle both preschool and early intervention calendars.? We found it typical to have 2 part time SLPs, or .2 of one person, .2 of another, .2 of yet another – and that becomes almost impossible to coordinate. If they can’t help but have both preschool and early intervention on their caseloads, it might just be easier to pay them for their early intervention days in the summer. ?Lapeer:Yes, it took the involvement of many people to move to the balanced calendar. ?Our whole center based 619 programing went with the balanced calendar, so Itinerant staff (like the PT and OT we use for Early On) was moved to this balanced calendar with the rest of their staff.Moving to a balanced calendar was proposed for the benefit of the students, but it did save money as staff were not required for ESY and Early On special ed services in addition to their regular school year. ? ................
