Hello Edge Families! Each week a new handout will be posted on our website: and every document will have a similar outline to what our Edge students experience during our Monday nights. We encourage you to read through this as a family, participate in the discussions and grow together over the coming weeks. Our youth typically have a game each week to go along with the night, for the at home version, due to the circumstances, our game as been omitted. Be on the lookout for upcoming information on this website and through emails. Gather: Will have the opening prayer, and a brief overview of the lesson.Scriptures: Have a bible ready or open up and type in the scripture. These verses are woven into the Teaching Guide section as well.Teaching Guide:This is an abbreviated outline of what would have been the Proclaim talk for the evening. The CCC is the Catechism of the Catholic Church and what is in the paragraph are direct excerpts from this book which sums of the beliefs of the Catholic Church. Should you ever want to get more information on any topic visit which has all the paragraphs on every topic. The going deeper section takes saint quotes and more to break open the topic of the night more. Questions: Go through each question together, this at home guide is great for youth and parents.Send: The send will have a guided closing activity and prayer.Weekly Challenge: Throughout the week, find a new way to complete these challenges with those in your home or through phone calls with relatives and friends. *Prayers will be in bold and can either be said aloud together, or you may have a designated reader. Some resources you can look up online: our Parents: God continue to bless you and your families abundantly. If you have any questions please email me at kgonzalez@ and I will reply as soon as I can.Katherine GonzalezInterim Edge Coordinator GATHER: *In the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Amen.Heavenly Father, we thank you for the opportunity and invitation to continue our journey of learning about faith at home this month. Keep special watch over our brothers and sisters who have COVID-19, be with the souls and families of those who have passed away from this virus, and continue to keep us healthy during this time. Open our hearts tonight, as we break open the lesson. Holy Spirit, you are welcomed here. Flood our home with peace and overshadow us as we share what is on our hearts about beginnings. Jesus, we trust in you. May we imitate your love over our family, our neighbors and friends. May our trust in you grow every day, and as we ask questions, may our faith and knowledge in You deepen. Amen. *In the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Amen**Overview of the Night:The fact that a piece of art exists proves that there must be an artist. There was someone who set up a canvas, selected the paint colors, took out the paint brushes, and made the painting. None of us would look at a piece of art and think it somehow created itself — that would not make sense and would be impossible. In the same way, when we look at our universe, it is illogical to conclude that it made itself. In fact, there are very significant scientific findings that uphold the theory of our universe having a finite beginning, so it is logical to think that something, or someone, outside of the universe brought it into being. SCRIPTURES:Open your bibles together as a family and read these scriptures.Genesis 1:1; Psalm 104:24, 145:9; Nehemiah 9:6; Ecclesiastes 3:11; John 1:3; Revelation 4:11TEACHING GUIDE:Beginnings ? Everything in our world has a beginning — human life, plants, animals, songs, movies, our days, etc.? We usually measure things from their beginnings — how old we are, how long a movie is, how long our school days are, how long summer vacation is, etc.Share a few facts of “beginnings” in your life (e.g., when your life began, how your favorite movie begins, how your favorite song begins, what your first day of middle school was like).Write your thoughts here:______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ _____________________________________________________________________________________ _____________________________________________________________________________________The Cause For Existence ? Everything relies on something else for its existence — every human being came from another human being, all mammals came from other mammals, even animals that lay eggs depended on that egg being laid to come into existence. ? It is scientifically impossible for anything in our world to come into existence on its own from nothing. There is not a single element in our universe that does not have something, even the smallest atoms, which in some way caused it to exist. ? There is are very compelling scientific theories that point to our universe having a beginning, a moment that it came into existence — these theories are shown through empirical evidence pointing to things like gravity, general relativity, cosmic microwave background radiation, the density of matter and energy in the universe, gravity waves, quantum disturbances, etc. (“Reflections on the Latest Big Bang Discovery,” Trent Horn, April 2014)? If there is strong evidence that our universe has a finite beginning, and everything that has a beginning has a cause for that beginning then we can logically wonder what caused our universe to exist.Since everything that exists was brought into existence by something outside of itself then we can reasonably conclude that there must be something, or someone, outside of time and space that created the universe. (CCC 290; Genesis 1:1; John 1:3) ? This cause for the existence of the world would have to be outside of time because when the universe began, time began and this being would also have to be outside of space because it created space — just like we did not create ourselves but someone separate from us, our parents, brought us into being, or an egg does not create itself but the chicken who is separate from it laid the egg.? Through these scientific findings we can use logic and philosophy to come to the conclusion that the creator of everything that exists, must be existence itself — something that does not have a beginning but simply is. ? The supreme being that is existence itself that is separate from time and space is who we call God. (Exodus 3:14, Revelation 1:8)Loving Creator ?Through science, we can know these facts about the beginning of the universe. Using our intellect, we can conclude that there must be something, or someone, who is outside of the universe to cause it to begin and exist. ? We can learn these facts, but science alone cannot answer, “Why does the universe exist?” Write your thoughts here: _______________________________________________________________________ _______________________________________________________________________ ?Generally, art is a way for artists to express themselves and share their thoughts or what they love. It is also a way for them to create and share something they believe is meaningful and beautiful.Going Deeper: Saint Thomas Aquinas once said that “creatures came into existence when the key of love opened His hand.” (CCC 293) ? In a similar way, scripture and the teachings of the Church continually reveal to us that God created the world out of love and goodness because He wanted to, and He created the world good and beautiful. (CCC 293)? The world was not created by accident, it was not a mistake, but it was the plan of our God who is so good and loving that He desired for it to be, and it was. ? Our faith shows us the “why” of creation and that there is meaning for existence and behind it all is a powerful, all-knowing, loving God. ? Scripture is filled with the stories of our God who from the beginning creates with plan and a purpose to reveal His great love and glory and we too are a part of this story. (CCC 293)QUESTIONS:Use the following questions to talk about with your family:? What has been a significant beginning in your life? ? What events led up to that beginning?? What is one take away you had from the ? What stories have you heard about how the universe began? ? What does it mean to you that God created the world out of His love and goodness?? Where/In who do you see God’s love in your everyday life?SEND:With your family share:1a. One beginning you are thankful for and why you are thankful for it.1b. Thank you for our beginnings and most importantly the beginning of our lives. Be with us as we continue to experience new beginnings and we especially pray for those that we listed above (read your 1b). May you always keep us healthy, happy and safe.
