|1 |People define ICT in different ways. I am interested in how would you define ICT with respect to something that could be |

| |used in lessons? What would you suggest that it includes and excludes? |

| |ICT would include technology e.g. computers and new invented technology. |

| |Communicate information to others |

| |Interactive systems that use computer logic base |

| |Computer stuff |

| |A tool using modern technology that can be used for teaching |

| |In terms of learning IT has to be technology that enhances learning |

| |Any form of digital item (including software) that helps a student learn. |

| |Programmes that demonstrate things that can’t be shown manually very well. E.g. 3D shapes, graphs etc. |

| |Technology used within a lesson, e.g. laptops, projectors and IWB |

| |Some electrical appliance that can be utilised for communication ideas/concepts. |

| |The use of chipped electrical devices |

| |A teacher at my first placement talked about the “bare foot maths teacher”; able to teach with a stick in sand on a beach – |

| |hence able to teach anywhere in the world. In that context the stick is ICT. |

| |ICT is modern technology such as IWBs, laptops/computers. Software and hand-held devices for pupils to use. |

| |Anything that can be used to communicate knowledge, share ideas, develop learning. In 2010 I tend to think of anything |

| |electronical that can be used for this purpose. |

| |Includes any computer or technological- based “gadget”. Includes PC and whiteboard, digital camera, web based applications |

| |(Voki, Google, Google maps, satellite imagery, Moodles etc.) |

| |Any device with which you can inform and communicate irrespective of technology employed. |

| |Computer projects, IWB, graphical calculator. |

| |If the use of ICT enables the pupil to enhance their understanding, I feel that it is worthwhile. If it is just a fancy way |

| |of presenting the lesson, I do not see the benefit. |

| |Most things that need a computer to make them work. |

| |Includes PowerPoint and interactive programmes. Excludes printers. |

| |The use of digital equipment to illustrate mathematical concepts whether spreadsheets and charts/geometric illustrations or |

| |via audio and video. |

| |ICT in mathematics is the use of technology to communicate ideas. Technology being defined as digital information (computer,|

| |software, game applications, graphical calculators). |

|4 |Briefly describe how you are thinking of using it equipment (e.g. yourself, whole class, groups, using peer teaching) |

| |Yourself – MyMaths – homework setting, booster packs for KS4 students, whole class – gradients, groups |

| |Myself, individual pupils, peer groups |

| |Interactive programmes like GeoGebra to demonstrate shape and possibly mechanics, PowerPoint to give clear examples of notes|

| |expected to be taken down. |

| |Most likely to use basic PowerPoint/projector to present lesson plans, starters, questions, plenaries. Pupils will, I hop, |

| |do maths on computers from time to times (e.g. using Autograph to understand algebra, graphs) |

| |Would like to use in ‘whole class’ lesson plan, but not sure if the resources will be available. Hoping to demonstrate |

| |plotting of functions and geometric proofs using ICT if the opportunity exists. |

| |Whole class interaction with IWB and software, Presenting class with PowerPoint, Expanding understanding with GeoGebra. |

| |Teaching, homework |

| |Whole class teaching, group teaching, peer teaching |

| |Mainly myself – with lesson prep and resource design and production. Also presenting and demonstrating in class. Pupils- |

| |definitely calculators. Depending on topics I am assigned also computer suite for handing data etc. On spreadsheets and |

| |graphing. |

| |To present a lesson (PowerPoint, whiteboard). To demonstrate a mathematical concept (Autograph/GeoGebra). Homework – |

| |websites (My Maths, SAM learning). In class(laptops)-assessments – group working (Bowland maths) |

|7 |Have you considered, or would you consider, using a camera, video, or sound recording in your lessons? If so, how would you |

| |use them? |

| |Would consider using a camera |

| |Monitor pupils questions and other contributions to discourse to improve my ability to understand what pupils are thinking |

| |which is not always possible in real time. |

| |Recording my own voice to check what I sound like. |

| |Depends on class |

|10 |a) What methods did you find worked for you in ICT training? |

| |Self-taught |

| |I’d like to get more familiar with maths-based software such as Autograph, GeoGebra, Tarsia etc. |

| |Initial instruction in Excel was useful – starting from scratch. |

| |Well thought out demonstrations which included application of new skills. |

| |Hands on training, video clips |

| |Getting involved at a PC, not just watching |

| |Clear concise instructions to follow |

| |Hands on in front of own computer so able to practice at the same time as being instructed. Being able to see instructions |

| |screen projected onto interactive screen at front of class. Also CBT if well designed is effective. |

| |Slow demonstrations with teacher/lecturer demonstrating on a screen and then allowed time to practice and ask questions. |

| |b) What did not work for you? |

| |Step by step instruction. |

| |Lectures, hands off |

| |Just watching |

| |Quick demonstrations with no follow up |

|11 |How much do you think that you will be encouraged by your mentor in your school placement to use ICT? |

| |Yes, my mentor and the school will encourage the use of ICT |

| |I’m sure it will be encouraged but I have yet to experience a situation in school where ICT opportunities have been fully |

| |exploited. |

| |Unknown, demands on school resources and school policy. |

| |Unlikely to be encouraged to do any more than she already does. Unclear to what extent school uses ICT. |

| |Unknown at this point. |

| |Yes |

| |Lots! Placement has only got SMART whiteboards |

| |Encouraged as my mentor was not really familiar and wanted to learn from me. |

| |I don’t know at this stage. I guess I will definitely use it for presenting etc, but not sure how much kids will use. |

| |Have no idea. Last placement it was to be able to use it but not depend on it. |

|12 |What do you regard as the benefits and disadvantages of using ICT in lessons, not only to students and teachers, but also to|

| |the school and wider community (parents, employers, colleges and universities)? |

|Benefits |Disadvantages (include possible problems) |

|Brings concepts to life |Not everyone learns visually |

|Teaches pupils how to self-learn |Slow to upload |

|Better understanding of visual topics such as in |Not always reliable to connect to internet |

|Geometry/shapes/3D/algebra + graphing/mechanics |Always have to have a plan B |

|Shape, able to demonstrate geometry rules for multiple examples |Possible abuse but feel risks here are overstated |

|quickly. |Class behaviour is more challenging in ICT suite. |

|Autograph and GeoGebra link between graphs and formula. |Internet connection. |

|ICT literacy through practicing different things. |Problem with sites like MyMaths, some detailed pages, some not very |

|Ability to do complex calculations (e.g. statistical simulation). |useful. |

|Huge benefit in reducing marking load, administration. |Avoid becoming gimmick, e.g. PowerPoint for the sake of using ICT |

|More engagement for students. |Computer crashing, (virus L did actually happen during my placement) |

|Pupils engaged by technology |Death by PowerPoint |

|Fresh approach to teaching |Technology failure |

|Different ways of building understanding |Pupil dependence on calculating aids. |

|Appealing to younger audience |Setting up time e.g. booking computer room etc. |

|Can differentiate |Students easily distracted by other functions of laptops and |

|Auto feedback |computers. |

|Auto marking |Being distracted by the package |

|Global reach |Kids get tired, bored looking at a screen for more than 30 mins. |

|Opportunities to access from anywhere at any time |We can get lost in technology where too long is spent finding/making |

|It builds people who are conversant with technology in a world |the right resources that not enough is spent helping pupils to learn.|

|where that’s increasingly necessary for employment. |When you rely on something wholly, it will go wrong! |

|Brings maths to life |Have to ensure use different sources |

|Real life skills |Cost |

|Greater range of resources |Technical faults |

|Access to learning outside the classroom |Teachers can be too dependent on it |

|Parents able to share learning with child and keep on track. |Perceived that a lesson is not a good lesson unless ICT is used |

|For some students it makes things clearer |Can fail |

|Can be very interactive | |

|Can allow students to try different things – see where mistakes are| |

|made | |
