JOB SUMMARY

This position is responsible for assisting in the operation of a water or wastewater treatment facility and for completing required training.

MAJOR DUTIES

• Assists in monitoring and adjusting the processing system.

• Assists in inspecting plant grounds, checking gauges, and taking readings

• Assists in monitoring flow levels, pumps, motors and valves.

• Assists in taking samples and testing chemical levels throughout the plant on a regular basis.

• Assists in making equipment repairs and responds to breakdowns.

• Assists in maintaining log books and computer files containing laboratory analysis results, distribution system changes, filter backwash readings, process control changes, chemical inventory, and other pertinent information; documents all problems or complaints.

• Attends job-related training; remains current on revisions to related policies, procedures, rules, regulations, requirements, and standards.

• Performs related duties as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED BY THE POSITION

• Knowledge of water and wastewater treatment processes.

• Knowledge of plant safety regulations and practices.

• Knowledge of plant and mechanical operations.

• Skill in use of equipment and hand tools.

• Skill in oral and written communication.

SUPERVISORY CONTROLS

The Water & Wastewater Director assigns work in terms of somewhat general instructions. The supervisor spot-checks completed work for compliance with instructions and established procedures, accuracy, and the nature and propriety of the final results.

GUIDELINES

Guidelines include plant regulations, city and department policies and procedures, federal and state guidelines, and supervisory instructions. These guidelines are generally clear and specific but may require some interpretation in application.

COMPLEXITY/SCOPE OF WORK

• The work consists of varied water or wastewater treatment operation duties. Strict regulations contribute to the complexity of the position.

• The purpose of this position is to assist in facility operations and complete training. Success in this position helps ensure the efficiency of plant operations and compliance with state and federal regulations.

CONTACTS

• Contacts are typically with co-workers, Public Works department, and the general public.

• Contacts are typically to provide services and to give or exchange information.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS/ WORK ENVIRONMENT

• The work is typically performed while intermittently sitting, standing, walking, bending, crouching or stooping. The employee frequently lifts light and heavy objects, uses tools or equipment requiring a high degree of dexterity, distinguishes between shades of color, and utilizes the sense of smell.

• The work is typically performed in an office, a laboratory and outdoors. The employee is exposed to dust, dirt, grease, machinery with moving parts, and contagious or infectious diseases or irritating chemicals. The work may require the use of protective devices such as masks, goggles, gloves, etc.

SUPERVISORY AND MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITY

None.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

• Ability to read, write and perform mathematical calculations at a level commonly associated with the completion of high school or equivalent.

• No experience requirements.

• Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid driver’s license issued by the State of Georgia for the type of vehicle or equipment operated.
