Haynes lifts the bonnet to give WW2 icon the manual treatment

One of Nazi Germany’s most adaptable and successful vehicles has had its story told and its secrets uncovered in a new Haynes Manual.

Designed by Ferdinand Porsche and built by Volkswagen, the Type 82 Kübelwagen and its amphibious cousin the Type 128/166 Schwimmwagen were to the Germans what the Jeep was to the Allies and were used widely by the Wehrmacht and the Waffen-SS during the Second World War.

These two robust little utility vehicles steadfastly served their soldiery, from the Eastern Front in the depths of winter to the blistering heat of the Libyan Desert – their dependability and simplicity were the hallmarks of their success.

The legendary wartime reputation of the Kübelwagen and Schwimmwagen has endured into the post-war years, with surviving vehicles acquiring a cult status in the 21st century among military vehicle collectors worldwide.

Author Chris McNab examines the development of these classic German military utility vehicles and takes a close-up look at their design and features, including the engine and transmission. The experience of the Kübelwagen and Schwimmwagen in combat is described, together with insights into their driving characteristics and operational maintenance.

He says:

“The Germans had a history during World War 2 of developing over-complicated and unreliable vehicles, but the Kübelwagen and Schwimmwagen were real moments of clarity and are rightly celebrated as iconic military vehicles. They are utilitarian but well designed, light but rigid and were successfully deployed across the globe.”

Illustrated with more than 250 historic wartime images, technical drawings, and detailed photographs of restored vehicles, many of which have rarely been seen before, the Haynes VW Kübelwagen/Schwimmwagen Manual offers unique insights into these iconic vehicles.
