Gov. Accounting Certificate Program Results

GFOA offers the Certified Public Finance Officer Program (need to pass all five parts of the examination) – go to and check under Certification

The GFOA classes are more technical and challenging than those sponsored by CSMFO.  They offer a certificate program as well.  Some of the UC and CSU campuses also offer governmental fund accounting classes with option for certification.  I know UC Riverside had a program several years ago as does UC Davis.  One of the campuses closer to you might also offer some courses.  They are typically offered through their extension programs.

This website might have some information for you.

UCR - Extension in Riverside has a great program.  There are 4 classes in the certificate program.

1. Principals of Accounting

2. Budgetary Process for Governmental & Non-Profit

3. Accounting for Government & Non-Profit - 1

4. Accounting for Government & Non-Profit - 2

CPFO (Certified Public Finance Officer) through GFOA. Takes a lot of work and about two years.

Try California Special Districts Association or Association of California Water Agencies – they have some education programs that might help.  Also, California CPA Education Foundation has some good classes/seminars (you don’t have to be a CPA to attend).

I believe the best is GFOA’s Certified Public Finance Officer which requires a BA plus 3 years of gov’t finance experience to qualify to take the five exams to become certified.

A programs not as difficult are Governmental Accounting, Reporting & Auditing Seminars offered by Texas Tech University/Rawls College of Business/Center for Professional Development.  They offer a 3-day Governmental Accounting & Financial Reporting (24 cpe) program plus a 1-day Governmental Accounting, Reporting & Auditing (8 cpe) class.  They are not a certification program, but offer you a certificate suitable for framing and represent a good, intense program.

For just on-going training, I might suggest GFOA’s training that moves from site to site throughout the year.

In addition, I can also recommend Master’s in Public Administration in several California State University campuses.

AGA with Management Concepts - .

Under CMTA, there is a certification and also at the Association of Public of public Treasurers, both geared toward Treasury Management.

I am not sure what you are looking for exactly but we have

a certificate program in public sector financial

management.

The courses include:

Public Budgeting and Finance (PPA 555)

State and Local Public Finance (PPA 590 T)

Public Financial Management (PPA 560)

Government Accounting (PPA 567)

Advanced Cost Accounting, Budgeting, and Control(ACCT 610) Quantitative Methods for Managerial Decisionmaking(IS 601)

The Certificate can be taken as a stand alone or in

conjunction with the MPA. In any case is does require an

undergraduate degree and their are some course

prerequisites.
