Gentleman, outside of these doors we have over three hundred new guests that have just checked into the Windward Resort with disposable income. How many of you are here to make a ton of money? Raise your hand.
The camera pans over the long table again and focuses on every individual’s hand raised high.
MEL MURDOCK
Those three hundred new guests will all be here tomorrow in this room listening to our sales pitch on time sharing. If we only close 30 percent of them, each of you will make at least a hundred thousand for three days work. Pause… Do I now have your undivided attention?
Mel Murdoch looks over and makes eye contact with BILLY MARTIN a man wearing a red shirt age 35 and nods his head before continuing his sales pitch.
BILLY MARTIN
You’ve got mine Mr. Murdock.
MEL MURDOCK
It’s no coincidence that everyone who is sitting in this room plays for the Minor League Charleston Dawgs Baseball team and is working here at the Windward Resort in their off season selling time shares.

In front of every one of you boys is a number. I’d like everyone to split up into three groups. Let’s play musical chairs and arrange the room by groups. All one’s on my right. All two’s in the middle and all threes to my left.

MEL MURDOCK
Great! I want everyone in Group#1 to introduce themselves and become familiar with one another. I want everyone else to observe the meet and greet process.
The camera pans over to Group#1 and zooms in on the warm handshakes and smiles of the four men who are seen chatting like old times.
MEL MURDOCK
Excellent. Let’s give Group#1 a big round of applause!

Alright, it’s time for everyone in Group#1 to introduce themselves to the rest of us. In Group#1 we have Billy Martin, RED EVANS, MICKEY OWENS & DIXIE WALKER.

DIXIE WALKER
Timesharing is a term that describes a method of use and ownership of a particular property. It normally allows you to use the property for a certain period of time each year. You pay an initial investment for the timeshare and then you will pay a maintenance fee each year for the upkeep of the timeshare.
MEL MURDOCK
You are absolutely correct. Can anyone in Group#2 give me a benefit that comes with purchasing a time share?

MEL MURDOCK
Right now I’ve got them all broken up into three groups Mr. Davis. I’ll know by the end of the day how many sharks we have.
CURT DAVIS
I’d hope you have some piranhas in the group. There is some serious money to be made this Labor Day weekend. I have a lot of money tied up in direct mail marketing, telemarketing and gift certificates.
MEL MURDOCK
Don’t worry Mr. Davis. The Charleston Dawgs won’t let you down.
CURT DAVIS
That was a great idea recruiting the entire minor league baseball team. They can work up right up until they have to report to spring training and be able to work right through our busy tourist season.

Good morning gentleman. We are going to cover all of the bases today and go over the complete selling process.

There are seven stages in the selling Process that we will be covering. Each step is vital. If you follow the process you will close a high percentage of your deals. I’ll give anyone in the room a hundred dollars if you can tell me what the most important step in the seven step process is?

The MEET AND GREET is the most important part of the selling process.

Within the first thirty seconds of meeting the customer, he or she has already made up their mind whether they can trust you or not. A firm handshake, a smile, and eye contact are all vital in the MEET AND GREET. Did you ever buy something from someone you didn’t like?
HUGH CASEY
I did! It was a bad experience. One I’ll never forget.
MEL MURDOCK
We need to ICE the Customer.
Can anyone tell what the acronym ICE means?
COOKIE KUTTER
(JOKING)
I scream, you scream, we all scream for Ice cream!

The initials ICE stand for Improve Customers Experience.

It makes sense to me. Be the best at what you do and the money will follow.

I’ll use a baseball analogy to make this simple. The MEET AND GREET gets you to first base.

Now going from 1st to second base is a challenge and where most salesmen fail. They fail to QUALIFY the customer and find out exactly what they want to purchase. Qualifying is simply a fact finding mission. Asking questions and listening to what the customer is really asking.
BOB BOWMAN
That’s why we have two ears and only one mouth to speak.
MEL MURDOCK
QUALIFYING means asking questions and listening for answers to determine the customers needs. It’s like going to the doctor. A proper diagnosis starts with asking questions or the doctor asking you to fill out a form.
DIXIE WALKER
So how do we get to third base?
MEL MURDOCK
I’m glad you’re paying attention Dixie. You get to third base by LANDING ON A PROGRAM. When you’ve asked the right questions, you’ll be able to determine what plan is right for your customer.
RED EVANS
Money is always the determining factor. The customer wants to drink champagne, but he can only afford a six pack of beer.
MEL MURDOCK
Now getting from third base to home plate is where you have a coach waiting to help you get to your final destination.

This is all starting to make sense.
MEL MURDOCK
The customer is always going to have an objection to throw at you. No different then when a pitcher throws an inside pitch to the batter to move him off the plate.
JOHNNY HUDSON
I’ve been known to back a hot hitter off the plate.
MEL MURDOCK
The customer doesn’t want to be sold! He wants to buy!
FRANK HOWARD
So how do we get from third to home coach?
MEL MURDOCK
You ASK FOR THE SALE and be completely silent. Even if you have to wait a couple of minutes for the customer to answer. I can tell you from my own personal experience, the next person who speaks loses.
FRANK HOWARD
Silence is golden.
MEL MURDOCK
This is where you separate the men from the boys. A good salesman is no match for the customer. It’s like having a relief pitcher with an over powering fastball.
MICKEY OWENS
So what happens when the hitter fouls off a pitch?

A hitter fouling off a pitch is like when a customer has an objection, you need to rephrase the question and REQUALIFY the customer on his specific needs.
JERRY CHEEVERS
Sounds a little complicated.
MEL MURDOCK
Here’s an example of REQUALIFYING the customer. Based on what I’ve told you what is the one thing that is preventing you from making this deal today?
JERRY CHEEVERS
You still haven’t explained how we get from third to home coach?
MEL MURDOCK
The last step in the process is called the TO or Turnover Over. That’s where you politely call a time out with your customer. Then you go over to me your coach and tell me the customer’s name and where you are in the seven step process.
JERRY CHEEVERS
Then what coach?
MEL MURDOCK
You introduce me to your customer and listen to my sales pitch. At no time will you interrupt. I will make sure you circle the bases and close the deal.
BILLY MARTIN
Now I get it coach! The seven step selling process is our formula for success.

Two of the main reasons customer’s buy is through passion or because of fear.
DIXIE WALKER
I always thought logic is what makes people buy?
MEL MURDOCK
The main reason that people buy is that they become emotional. I want each and every one of you to become passionate about what you have to offer.
BILLY MARTIN
Hey Coach, you left out the fear factor?
MEL MURDOCK
Good pick up Mr. First basemen. That’s where I come in to close your deal and create a sense of urgency.
BILLY MARTIN
Does that anything to do with selling what’s available today? Or SWAT….as you refer to it.
MEL MURDOCK
Absolutely! My job is to help you find the customer’s hot button. There is no objection that can not be overcome. Even a condition such as lack of money can be overcome by offering our in house financing.
DIXIE WALKER
I like the team concept coach. The seven step process is easy to follow. I’m going to find each customers hot button and call a time out and get you involved in every deal. Put me in the lineup coach, I’m ready to play!

Yeah! These girls are hotter than the chili peppers and barbecue sauce!
MEL MURDOCK
I’m already excited. How many girls am I expecting and what are their names?
CURT DAVIS
I’ve got three girls coming. TRIXIE WILLIAMS, DOLLY ANDERSON, and BETTY LAMAR.
MEL MURDOCK
All the salesmen are at lunch. The guests are scheduled to be here by 3pm today. That gives me plenty of time to have a final meeting with the girls and all the salesmen.

Dixie and I was wondering if you want us to bring you back something from the restaurant?
Mel Murdock picks up a tape dispenser and seals shut one of three boxes of DVD player on his desk.
MEL MURDOCK
No Thanks Billy. I’ll tell you what you can do for me. Can you and Dixie take this trash can out back and dump it in one of the large dumpsters?

Eye sore? Every month when I get the monthly car payment statement and take a look at the bill that I have to pay on a fixed income, that’s an eye sore.

Leonard likes all those new fangled electronic gadgets. I’m sure he’ll have no problem programming it.

Remember when you came home with that universal remote and were having problems getting it work? Leonard was the one who programmed it and got it to work.
FRED LEWIS
What I remember most about that incident is what the salesman told me when I called the store and asked for his help to program the remote control. He rudely told me to RTFM and hung up the phone.

I couldn’t believe the salesman was so rude and hung up on me again. So I called back the store and asked to speak to the salesman. He got on the phone and without giving me a chance to speak insulted my intelligence. He told me that since I wasn’t smart enough to operate the remote control, I should return it and get my money back.
BESSIE LEWIS
So what did you do?
FRED LEWIS
I called our son Leonard the lawyer and he called the store manager and told him that if the salesman did not call back to apologize we’d see him in court.
BESSIE LEWIS
Now that explains why that obnoxious salesman called you back. It’s good to have a lawyer in the family.

My Wife and I think have decided on the Gold Premium vacation package. It’s got a lot of bells and whistles.
BILLY MARTIN
I just need your initials on the paperwork and I’ll have our Sales Manager Mel Murdock finalize your agreement.
Billy Martin hands the paperwork to Mr. Ryan for his signature. Mr. Ryan takes out a pen from his shirt pocket and initials the paperwork and then handing it back to Billy Martin.
BILLY MARTIN
If you’ll excuse me for a minute, I’ll be back with our sales manager Mel Murdock.
WALLY RYAN

I sold our top of the line Gold Premium vacation package.
MEL MURDOCK
Do you have any idea how much money you just made?
BILLY MARTIN
No, not really.

The Gold Premium package sells for 12 grand. You just made 3 grand in less than an hour. Not bad for your first deal.
BILLY MARTIN
Wally Ryan is a big time golfer. It was our championship golf courses that sealed the deal. I sold the plan based on its value and benefits. The price of the vacation package was never mentioned. Money was never an issue.
Mel Murdock takes the sales agreement from Billy Martin and gives Billy a congratulatory hand shake.

Mel Murdock shakes Wally Ryan’s hand warmly and smiles. He then turns and bows as he warmly shakes Roberta Ryan’s hand.

WALLY RYAN
After listening to all of our options, this plan made the most sense. Billy Martin did an excellent job explaining all of your programs.

Wally Ryan goes into his back pocket and pulls out a credit card and hands it to Mel Murdock.

I’ll just need to process the transaction. It should only take a couple of minutes.

Billy Martin will bring back your card and give you all the paperwork for the Gold Premium vacation package.

I’m just kidding. I wanted to make sure I had your attention. I’ve been selling time shares a very long time. About the only thing I can’t teach you is how to hit a curve ball.
BILLY MARTIN
My hitting coach has been trying for years to get me to be more patient at the plate.
MEL MURDOCK
The curveball is what keeps guys like us in the minor leagues. Just about everyone can hit a fastball. It takes a real patient hitter who can recognize what pitch is coming at him.
BILLY MARTIN
Sort of like strengths and weaknesses.
MEL MURDOCK
Recognize your customer and you can take advantage of there weaknesses. A good salesman is a like having a baseball pitcher throwing a wicked curveball that no one can hit.
Mel Murdock hands Billy Martin back Mr. Ryan’s credit card and Billy heads towards the office door back to his closing station in Group#1.

So what is the obstacle?
JOHNNY HUDSON
It’s price. Henry wants a lower price. He wants me take off twenty percent off each program.
MEL MURDOCK
I get it! He doesn’t want to see you make a commission on the sale. By any chance did you say something that might have pissed him or his wife off?

Mom, you and dad deserve to enjoy this time in your life. All that I have today is because of you.
Bessie bends down under the Christmas tree and picks out two presents and hands them both to her son Leonard. Leonard opens up the smaller box of the two first.

Leonard unwraps the second present and notices it is a DVD player.

Leonard takes the DVD player out of the box and connects it to the front video inputs and puts a DVD in to watch a movie.

FRED LEWIS
Sounds good to me.
The television screen turns blue and no picture can be seen. Leonard gets up from his lounge chair and adjusts the wires.
LEONARD LEWIS
That’s odd? The wires are connected correctly. Let me get a screw driver and open it up. Sometimes they put something inside for shipping purposes causing the units not to work.
Leonard returns with a screw driver and opens up the DVD player trying to figure out the problem.
FRED LEWIS
What’s wrong with it Son?
LEONARD LEWIS
It’s defective. The motor is missing. I hope you have a warranty. If I didn’t know better I’d think this was a prank.

LEONARD LEWIS
My name is Leonard and my parents Bessie and Fred Lewis were there over the Labor Day weekend and got a free DVD player from you and it doesn’t work.
MEL MURDOCK
Okay. Give me a second I’m in front of my computer. Bessie and Fred Lewis. I’ll check.
Mel Murdock enters the name and checks the date to confirm the information.

LEONARD LEWIS

A man dressed in a uniform is knocks on the meeting room door. Orlando Clemente opens the door and listens to the man and then points to Mel Murdock.
The camera follows the man as he walks up to the front of the room where Mel Murdock is standing and hands him an envelope.
Mel Murdock opens the large envelope and pulls out a dozen white envelopes that are tied in a bundle. He goes through the bundle of envelopes and finds everyone’s name on a letter.
MEL MURDOCK
It looks like someone has gone through the trouble of sending each and every one of us a letter.
ORLANDO CLEMENTE
I hope it’s a letter from my agent.
Mel inspects the return address on the envelope and comments.
MEL MURDOCK
No, it’s not from an agent.
Mel walks around the room and hands each man an envelope with his name imprinted on it.
The camera pans around the room as each man opens his personalized letter to read. The camera zooms in on Mel Murdock as he puts on his glasses to read his letter.
Billy Martin stands up after reading his letter in disbelief.

Mel Murdock pulls out his cellular phone and dials the Curt
Davis at the corporate office to inform him of the contents of the letter.
The camera follows Mel Murdock as he walks to the back of the meeting room to talk privately on his cellular phone.

MEL MURDOCK
Hello, Mr. Davis. It’s very important that I speak with you.
CURT DAVIS
If it’s about the subpoena our lawyers are already working on it.
MEL MURDOCK
Everyone in the entire sales team including myself are all being indicted for fraud. This is serious.
CURT DAVIS
Our legal experts are in the process of changing the name of our time share organization. Because our business is registered and located in George Town in the Cayman Islands the limited partners of the company are virtually untouchable.
MEL MURDOCK
What do you think will happen to the rest of us who have been subpoenaed to appear in court?

Well, for one thing there will be some stiff fines levied against any salesman who are convicted of the charges filed against them. Unfortunately, you might not be so lucky when all of this plays out.

CURT DAVIS
As the sales manager you are directly responsible for the everyday operations of the business. Mel, you’re probably looking at up to five year’s jail time. Maybe less if you’re paroled early on good behavior.
MEL MURDOCK
But I’m too old to go to jail.
CURT DAVIS
You’re never too old to go to jail. I’ll have an attorney contact you and he’ll start working on your defense.
MEL MURDOCK
My defense?
CURT DAVIS
Somebody has to take the fall.
Mel Murdock squints his eyes and lifts the hair off his forehead. He then grimaces in pain and massages the area around his heart.

Curt, I can’t take the stress! I can’t go to prison! Oh, I just got a sharp pain in chest. I think I’m having a heart attack!

The salesman all take a step backwards and give Billy Martin a little extra room to work with.
Billy takes the phone from Mel’s hand and places it next to his ear and listens to find out who is holding on the other end of the line.

Billy quickly dials the operator and calls for an ambulance.
INTERCUT BETWEEN BILLY MARTIN AND POLICE DISPATCHER
Billy Martin takes off his jacket and rolls it up and puts it under Mel Murdock’s head.
BILLY MARTIN
I think Mr. Murdock just suffered a heart attack. I need you to send an ambulance out to the Windward Resorts right away.
DISPATCHER
Is he breathing?
BILLY MARTIN
Just barely.
DISPATCH
We are on our way. We’ll be out there in about ten minutes.

Mel Murdock is standing in front of the ticket box office window waiting to buy a ticket to tonight’s game.
MEL MURDOCK
I’d like to buy a ticket for tonight’s game.
The TICKET MAN a man in his late sixties with white hair and a white beard looks at Mel Murdock and cocks his head to the right before he answers.
TICKET MAN
I’m sorry Mr. Murdock but I can’t sell you a ticket for tonight’s game.
MEL MURDOCK
How did you know my name? What’s your name?

My name is Peter. I know everyone’s name who tries to purchase a ticket.
MEL MURDOCK
Peter, why can’t I buy a ticket? Is the game sold out?
TICKET MAN
Tonight is “Nobody Night” it’s a night when no fans are allowed in to the ball park until after the game.
MEL MURDOCK
Okay. So I guess I’ll just stick around until after the game.
TICKET MAN
I’m sorry but I was instructed not to let you in.
MEL MURDOCK
Why can’t you let me in? Who gave you those instructions? What is going on here? I demand an explanation!
TICKET MAN
You have never done a good deed in your life. There is no way I can let you into the stadium.
MEL MURDOCK
How much is the price of a ticket?
TICKET MAN
The price is normally ten dollars for a ticket. But like I’ve already told you tonight is a special promotion night.

Okay. I’ll give you ten dollars for the ticket and I’ll add an extra two dollars as a tip.
TICKET MAN
I’m afraid it’s too late to do any good deeds.
MEL MURDOCK
I demand to know who gave you the order to keep me out?
TICKET MAN
I’m sorry Mr. Murdock but the ticket booth is closed.
The man at the booth rolls down a metal shutter closing the window of the ticket booth.

Billy hands the ball and pen to Red Evans to autograph and pass around to the rest of the group.
The camera pans around the visitor waiting room and zooms in as Mickey Owens autographs the ball and hands it to Dixie Walker.
BILLY MARTIN
Being that there are only four passes, we’ll all go up in Groups.
Frank Howard hands Billy Martin the ball with everyone’s personal autographed signature.
BILLY MARTIN
Thanks, Frank.
Billy leads the way as Red Evans, Mickey Owens and Dixie Walker follow close behind heading towards the elevator.

The camera pans around the room and zooms in on a heart monitor attached to Mel Murdock. Mel Murdock appears to be sleeping.
Billy Martin, Red Evans, Mickey Owens and Dixie walker all inch there way closer to Mel’s bed.
BILLY MARTIN
(Concerned)
Mel, can you hear me?
Mel Murdock opens his eyes and tries to turns his head to see who is talking. Mel grimaces in pain and massages the area around his heart.
MEL MURDOCK
(Groggy)
Yeah! Aoh! I’m in a lot of pain. The doctors told me I had a heart attack.
BILLY MARTIN
You were talking on the phone when it happened. Do you remember who you were talking to?
MEL MURDOCK
Okay, ahh… I remember. I was talking to Mr. Davis. Why?
BILLY MARTIN
He wanted me to give you a message the moment you woke up.

What was the message?
BILLY MARTIN
For starters, he told me not to worry about you because
only the good die young!
MEL MURDOCK
Really?
BILLY MARTIN

What else did he have to say?

He said and I quote “When that prick wakes up tell him I’ll catch up to him later.”
MEL MURDOCK
Can you hand me my cell phone it’s on the table?
Billy Martin reaches for the phone and hands it to Mr. Murdock. Mel dials a number on the phone and waits for someone to answer the call.
MEL MURDOCK
Hello, Mr. Davis. I just got your message. It’s the prick, I just woke up! I’ll catch up to you later; I’ll see you in court! Bye.
Mel Murdock hangs up the call and hands the cell phone back to Billy Martin to return to the table. Billy Martin goes into his pocket and pulls out the autographed baseball and hands it to Mel Murdock.

I’d like to present you with an
autographed baseball signed by the entire Charlotte Dawgs Minor League team.
Mel inspects the ball and looks over all of the signatures.
MEL MURDOCK
This ball means a lot to me.
BILLY MARTIN
The boys and I want to show you that you mean a lot to us too.
MEL MURDOCK
I’d like to start by telling you as the sales manager for the Windward Resort Time Share, I am going to take full
responsibility for the law suit that is filed against us.
BILLY MARTIN
What about the court date? It looks like were all not going to be able to report to spring training on time.
MEL MURDOCK
There was a man you might have seen who just left here. That was my lawyer. I have already made arrangements to have this suit settled out of court. I will pay all the money back to anyone who feels they got a raw deal.
BILLY MARTIN
It may cost you millions of dollars.
MEL MURDOCK
The benefits I receive far out weigh the costs.

MICKEY OWENS

MEL MURDOCK
The doctor says I should be up and around in a couple of weeks.
BILLY MARTIN
I’m betting you’ll be up sooner than that. The Hoot n Holla girls will be here any minute.
The boys laugh hysterically giving each other a high five.

(Laughing)
