AT REST

Bernie Crowley, Patron of Parkes Antique Motor Club until 3 years ago, passed away on 7th September,

aged 89 years. Until a few years ago, Bernie was

an active participant in Club activities, driving his MG Magnette

and later a Mercedes. Bernie was skilled at any venture he

undertook, and timber model examples of his craftsmanship are

prized exhibits on display in the Parkes Motor Museum.

The Club's condolences have been expressed to his widow Delia, and

the family.

SATURDAY 9th SEPTEMBER

SUPERCHEAP DISPLAY

We only had space for 6, but we managed to squeeze 7 in!

As it happened we had five Fords and only two examples of fine British technology. I suppose it goes to show that some makes of vehicle are more in need of Supercheap parts than others! The shoppers at Supercheap showed a lot of interest in the vehicles so this can be regarded as a very worthwhile exercise and Supercheap has given the Club a Trade Discount membership! See Bruce Danson for details of when and how this concession can be accessed.

SUNDAY 17th SEPTEMBER NARROMINE The Iris Farm wasn't going to be ready until at least the October Long Weekend so we decided to give it a miss and go straight to Narromine Air Museum with a short stop at the Peak Hill Lolly Shop. 8 cars left Parkes at 9,30am, and because of the "short" stop in Peak Hill, arrived at Narromine Aero Club at 12 noon for lunch.

Page 5

After lunch we discovered the significant heritage impact that Narromine has in Australian Aviation, and it is being well cared for and promoted within the Air Museum, which had a major and impressive upgrade in 2016.

Narromine is now Australia's oldest regional Aero Club. In 1920, locals gathered in thousands to see the Vickers Vimy bomber, winner of the England ? Australia air race, touch down. In the barnstorming 20's and 30's, Narromine hosted famous visitors such as Kingsford Smith, Charles Ulm, Sir Alan Cobham, Arthur Butler, Jean Batten, and Sir Francis Chichester. It hosted the Mosquito bomber men of the RAF top secret 618 Squadron, and the RAAF 93 Squadron of Beaufighters.

Pride of place is the replica Wright Flyer,

together with some of the forms made (from copies of the original plans) in reconstructing the craft.

Above is a restored Corben Super Ace, a homebuilt sports plane of 1938.

There's also an impressive display of photographs and history relating to aviation in

Narromine. Left is a commemoration of the Qantas Lounge. In the past, when airliners from overseas were delayed entry to Sydney, they landed at Narromine, rather than risk running out of fuel flying circuits waiting to get into Mascot. So Narromine had a Qantas Lounge! Connie the Super Constellation frequently

visits Narromine. A worthwhile visit!

SATURDAY 23rd SEPTEMBER

REGIONAL BUSKING CHAMPIONSHIPS

PEAK HILL

Only 3 cars ventured into this event, probably because others were either: exhausted from recent outings, or:

unsure of what may lie in store.

The area of the "region" was not obvious, but there were some buskers who were known as local to Parkes Shire, and others. A wide range of talent from those who may well have been entering their first competition to more seasoned performers. There were some very young talents (possibly still Primary School age) who bravely entered the public arena and gave it their best shot. All appeared to be encouraged by the presence of a (small) audience.

I reckon it turned out to be a relaxing and enjoyable day, and hopefully encouraging to the contestants.

SUNDAY 1st OCTOBER

FORBES MOTOR SHOW

A great recovery from last year, when floodwaters caused the show to be cancelled. An excellent range of vehicles ranging from 1902 to the present, and fresh from the shed to specialized high quality custom.

1914 Overland 30cwt truck

Count the plug leads on this Mini to see why the seat is set back!

The owner of this post vintage Chrysler Plymouth had been trying to find out why there was a push pull switch on the back. In NSW, until the early 1950's when rear reflectors became compulsory, tail lights had to be turned on when the vehicle was parked on the road at night. Because most vehicles had 6v systems and parking lights on the same circuit as the tail light, the latter was often independently switched with an aftermarket switch located on or near the tail light, primarily to conserve battery life.

And with no bonnets to lift, people did the next best thing

Attendance was up a bit on last year, with the usual variety of machines entered.

Feedback from entrants has been very positive, and congratulations must go to Bruce and his band of helpers for a

job well done.

NEXT EVENTS

FRIDAY 6th OCTOBER

KIDS DAY OUT HPC

This is Parkes Visitor Centre's (now) regular open day for children to give them something a bit extra to do during

the school holidays.

The "day out" starts at 11.00am and runs until 3.00pm. There'll be face painting, Jumping Castle, the Snake Man,

and many other things, including US!

All we need to do is to have a few cars for them to look at, be on hand to talk about our cars, and if you don't have a

car for them to talk about, tell them about some of the exhibits in the Museum.

Members will be able to take the children for a short ride in their car, should they so desire. Information Centre staff

will be warning parents that most of our vehicles don't have seat belts (or child restraints for the littlies), and will be

collecting a small donation (to defray out of pocket expenses) from those who wish to ride.

Best to assemble at HPC from 10.30am. Those who are happy to provide rides should park on the bitumen car park

and those who prefer to just talk about their vehicles should park on the grass in an area to be defined.

The Club will provide a sausage sizzle lunch for members attending.

For those who are concerned about where our future members may come from, this is a good starting point!
